Abstract

This study identifies the language features used by Jehian Panangian in same-sex conversations with different addressees, Raymond Chin (same age and status) and Hermanto Tanoko (older and higher status), in podcasts. It also explores the differences and similarities in Jehian’s utterances when conversing with each addressee, utilizing Coates’ (2013) language features theory and Holmes’ (2013) theories on age and status. Jehian's utterances were transcribed and analyzed using a qualitative approach. The findings showed that Jehian used swearing and taboo language and compliments with Raymond but not with Hermanto. Jehian used more minimal responses, tag questions, and commands and directives with Raymond. Jehian also used more casual expressions and different functions on particular language features. Despite these differences, the dominant and less frequently used language features were similar in both conversations. In conclusion, the addressee’s age and status significantly influenced the speaker’s language features, alongside the host’s style and discussion topic.

Abstract

The planet is currently facing a crisis, and capitalism plays a part in it as it affects both the workers and the provider, nature. This paper aims to show the effects of capitalism to the working people and environment in a dystopian world where nature is on the brink of destruction, using screenplay as the creative medium, and dystopian genre. This creative work uses the theories of ecological Marxism and class struggle. Annie, an epitome of the working people in Outside, has to endure the exhaustion as capitalism run by the ruler of Inside leads to long working hours and product alienation, malnutrition due to the lack of food and water, as well as anxiety as her sister falls sick. The intense capitalistic production leads to resource depletion in the form of drought as well as the scorching heat. To make things worse, the Outside people are being treated unjustly, causing mass action.

Abstract

Ahmad Tohari is one of the most famous Indonesian contemporary novelists, whose works are praised for their social and environmental criticism. The Red Bekisar is one of Tohari’s stories which specifically focuses on the danger of metropolitan life compared to the wisdom of the traditional way of living close to nature and God. With a woman as the lead character, The Red Bekisar might pass as a literary work representing environmental and feminist values at first glance. However, this research argues that when analyzed from the framework of ecofeminism, especially concerning the symbolic connection between nature and women, The Red Bekisar uses languages that naturalize women and feminize nature. It presents nature and women according to the patriarchal bias; as "others" who are wild, alluring to be conquered, dependent on male caretakers, and ultimately, as less than men.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the feminine interactional styles and masculine interactional styles used by Lucinta Luna in the YouTube video Terbongkar: Lucinta Keceplosan Alasan Ayu Ting Ting Tolak Boy! Episode 1 #TheFamily. Besides, the writer employed a qualitative approach using Holmes’ (2006) theory on feminine interactional styles and masculine interactional styles.Moreover, the writer collected all utterances of Lucinta Luna in her interaction with the host and the participants. The analysis presented Lucinta utilized both feminine and masculine interactional styles, but she used more feminine interactional styles. Nonetheless, she did not use one feature of masculine interactional style at all, which is aggressive interruptions. She used more feminine language, which was related to her gender as a trans woman.

Abstract

Translators employ strategies as not every word has its direct equivalence in another language. This study aims to examine the strategies employed in the translation of dialogue texts and narrations found in Raider of the Copper Hill into Indonesian. Furthermore, the writer employs a qualitative approach using Baker’s (2018) strategies to examine each dialogue text and narration in the comic and see whether the strategies succeed in maintaining the meaning. Baker’s (2018) strategies the translator uses to translate the dialogue texts, namely: translation by a more general word, by a less expressive word, by cultural substitution, using a related word, by paraphrase using unrelated words, and by omission. To translate the narrations, the translator employs the same strategies except the less expressive word strategy. However, some tones and humor contained in the texts get altered.
