Abstract

This study analyzes the narrative structure of OMORI, a 2020 psychological horror RPG by Omocat, focusing on its portrayal of trauma through the protagonist Sunny. Incorporating Bal’s (2017) narratology and Wei’s (2011) narrative framework, this study examines techniques that contribute to unpredictability and trauma-driven narrative. Using Bermejo-Berros et al.’s (2022) narrative tension theory and Green and Brock’s (2000) transportation theory, the study reveals how each technique, respectively, incites immersive horror and emotional connection in players. Unpredictability can create immersive horror through narrative tension, whereas trauma-driven narrative may create an emotional connection by making the players sympathize with the character. Through its placement and presentation of sequences, the game evokes cognitive and emotional responses in players. The narrative structure in OMORI highlights the impact of unpredictability and trauma-driven narratives in game storytelling. Analyzing the game’s sequences and mechanics reveals their role in creating profound emotional experiences for players.

This research used Harris (2018) and Fahnestock (2011) theories on rhetorical devices. The findings showed that Brian Tracy utilized different types of rhetorical devices to aid him in emphasizing his main idea, such as metaphor, simile, sentential adverb, asyndeton, polysyndeton, hyperbole, paralepsis, litotes, and climax. The three most used types of rhetorical devices in his presentation are Metaphor, Sentential Adverb and Simile. Abstract

This qualitative study examines impoliteness strategies and their functions used by Cathy McMorris Rodgers (the chairperson) during a hearing with Mr. Chew (TikTok CEO). The hearing focused on the data security, regulation, TikTok’s relationship with China, and her impolite response to Mr. Chew’s questions. This study highlights Ms. Rodger’s role in leading the hearing is higher than the TikTok CEO’s who is the defendant. This increases the likelihood that she uses impolite language. Theories by Culpeper (1996, 2005), Culpeper et al. (2003), and Culpeper (2011) used to analyze the impoliteness strategies and functions. The findings showed that the chairperson utilized all impoliteness strategies, except withholding politeness. Negative impoliteness strategy was often used to limit the freedom of Mr. Chew’s explanation, whereas sarcasm strategy was least used to uphold formality. She chose straightforward over presupposition. Meanwhile, she used all the types of impoliteness functions, with coercive impoliteness function being the most used, followed by affective and entertaining functions. She applied coercive most often to get clear answers from Mr. Chew and to exercise her power. In conclusion, the chairperson utilized impoliteness strategies on purpose to exercise her power, to obtain social dominance, and to establish superiority during the conversation.

Abstract

This study explores the adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women into a 2022 Korean television series, focusing on feminist themes across cultural contexts. By examining the portrayal of women's choices and roles, the research reveals how feminist ideas are reimagined for contemporary audiences. Both the novel and the series portray second-wave feminism through characters like Jo March, who challenges traditional gender roles, and third-wave feminism through characters like Meg March, who emphasizes autonomy and personal agency. The Korean series, featuring characters like Oh In-joo and Oh In-hye, illustrates the interplay between traditional values and modern feminist discourse. This study highlights the cultural reinterpretation of feminist values in adaptations.

Abstract

This creative thesis is about self-efficacy and learned helplessness in young adults. Self-efficacy is the belief in one’s ability to achieve one’s goal. The lack of self efficacy is known as learned helplessness, a term to describe the belief that one does not have control over the future. Through a novella, this thesis explores why young adults experience lack of self-efficacy and how they develop self-efficacy. This novella implements the theory of self-efficacy by Bandura (1997) and the theory of learned helplessness by Peterson, Maier, and Seligman (1993). The novella tells a story of a young adult girl, Etta, who is living in an oppressive orphanage. Due to her traumatic experience, she suffers from learned helplessness, making her unable to get out of the oppressive environment. However, after reading her senior’s diary, getting support from her close ones, and practicing the skills, she develops the belief that she can escape the orphanage. Her new conviction helps her in overcoming setbacks until she is able to achieve her goal.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify various types of figurative language used in the video advertisements for two games, Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. Following Harris's (2018) theory on rhetorical devices, particularly figurative language, the researchers analyzed the utterances in these videos. According to Harris (2018), there are 11 types of figurative language namely: simile, analogy, metaphor, catachresis, metonymy, synecdoche, personification, allusion, eponym, apostrophe, and transferred epithet. Using qualitative research methods, the researchers collected and analyzed the data. The results indicated that the types of figurative language found in Genshin Impact were simile, analogy, metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, personification, and allusion whereas simile, analogy, metaphor, metonymy, personification, and allusion were found in Honkai: Star Rail. Synecdoche, personification, and the combination of metaphor and synecdoche were absent in Honkai: Star Rail. The possible reasons for the differences might probably because of the differences in the game’s themes and the amount of information.
