Abstract

This article aims to conduct a systematic review of using RAP (Read, Ask, Put) to improve reading comprehension. The search strategy is based on the following keywords: "RAP (Read, Ask, Put) strategy", "Reading Comprehension" from Google Scholar. Based on the results of this article, only 6 articles were analyzed. One of the strategies to improve reading comprehension is Read, Ask, Put (RAP) because this strategy can make the students improve their reading comprehension, memory of important information, and also enlarge their vocabulary. RAP (Read, Ask, Put) is a strategy that can improve the reading comprehension of students with and without disabilities and is extremely flexible. It can be used for elementary, middle, and high school students across many different content areas. This strategy can help the students improve their understanding of the text that is better than when they only read. The strategy needs students to be involved in reading materials through questioning and paraphrasing to enlarge their comprehension of the material. From the questioning and paraphrasing, students process information for a better understanding of what they read. Keywords: RAP (Read, Ask, Put) strategy, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of textbooks intended for 9th-grade junior high school students, which are specifically designed according to the latest curriculum known as the Merdeka curriculum. The purpose of this study is to determine the suitability of the textbook content for 8th-grade students based on Thomlinson's theory. The main data source for this study is the English textbook "English for Nusantara SMP/MTS Grade IX”, published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Research in 2022. Using a descriptive approach and document analysis, this study focuses on the content of the textbook, examining elements such as impact, learner comfort, building confidence, relevance, language exposure, and more. The textbook's content was examined during data collection, and the analysis included subjective and objective evaluations based on Tomlinson's sixteen criteria for successful learning materials. The textbook mostly complied with Tomlinson's criteria, as evidenced by fifteen of the sixteen criteria being satisfied, such as engaging content, learner participation, and a variety of learning options. However, the textbook lacks facilitation of materials and exercises that can make students' left and right brains work in balance. Keywords: Textbook, Thomlinson’s Theory

Abstract

Abstract Translating comics presents unique challenges, particularly due to the rich cultural elements embedded in the source language. This study explores the translation strategies applied to hyperbolic expressions in the Donald Duck comic series. The current study uses a descriptive analysis method. The analysis reveals that domestication is the predominant strategy employed. By utilizing domestication, the translator adapts cultural references to align with the norms and expectations of the target audience, thereby enhancing readability and familiarity. However, this approach often leads to a reduction or loss of the original hyperbolic effect, as the translated text tends to emphasize the underlying meaning or contextual relevance over a literal preservation of rhetorical devices. While domestication facilitates pragmatic equivalence and audience engagement, it may compromise the stylistic and emotive force of the original text, highlighting the tension between cultural accessibility and rhetorical fidelity in comic translation Keywords: Hyperbole, Comic translation strategy, Domestication, Foreignization

Abstract

This research aims to develop an effective instructional design for Fiqh reading materials in the context of Islamic education. Fiqh, as an integral part of Islamic religious studies, requires a systematic and structured approach to learning to facilitate deep understanding. An appropriate instructional design can increase learning efficiency, improve information retention, and promote practical application of Fiqh knowledge. This research proposes a systematic approach to developing Fiqh reading materials, covering the identification of learning objectives, audience analysis, relevant teaching strategies, and comprehensive evaluation. The methodology for developing these materials includes planning, development, implementation, and evaluation stages, which collectively support the achievement of effective learning objectives. The proposed instructional design incorporates the application of constructivist learning theory and contextual approach in compiling Fiqh reading materials. Based on this research, the results show that the use of an appropriate instructional design can facilitate better understanding of Fiqh principles and increase active student engagement in the learning process. Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness and student perceptions of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) embedded in English learning applications for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. Employing a quantitative quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design with a correlational component, the study involved 120 upper secondary school students from three public senior high schools in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Two mobile applications, BBC Learning English and English Reading Test, were used over a two-week period. Data were collected using a standardized 25-item multiple-choice reading comprehension test and a validated 20-item perception questionnaire adapted from established reading assessment frameworks. Paired sample t-tests revealed a statistically significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension scores after the intervention (p < 0.05; d = 0.78). Pearson product-moment correlation analysis indicated a positive relationship between students’ perceptions of the assessment features and their reading score gains. Students reported highly positive perceptions, especially in usability and engagement, while feedback mechanisms received slightly lower but still positive ratings. These findings highlight the potential of mobile-based reading comprehension assessments as effective tools for improving reading performance in EFL contexts, provided they are designed with authentic materials, interactive tasks, and timely feedback. Keywords: Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL), reading comprehension, formative assessment
