Jurnal Komunikasi Global (JKG) is a peer-reviewed journal organized and published by the Department of Communication Studies, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Syiah Kuala University. JKG publishes research and review articles promoting various approaches in the field of communication studies limited to mass communication, marketing communication, and intercultural communication (starting from Volume 9(2) 2020). JKG publishes twice a year in June and December. Each volume contains eight research and review articles. JKG is a follow-up journal of Komunikasi Global which was firstly published in 2012. Since 2017, the journal has been published online with the first edition Volume 6(1) 2017. Starting from Volume 7(1) 2018, JKG adopted the IMRAD model for Heading Style and Writing Publication following the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Higher Education regulations. JKG was accredited by Kemenristekdikti RI (SINTA 4) from Volume 7(1) 2018. Since Volume 10 (1) 2021, JKG is accredited with SINTA 3 (SK No.158/E/KPT/2021). Since Volume 9(1) 2020, a new journal template adding article history, citation and some adjustment of font size, header, table format, article history and citation has been initiated to maintain the quality of the publication.

Abstract

February 15th, 2017, Aceh held the election for the third times. 3,443,583 voters spread across 23 districts/cities contested by six pairs of candidates either through individual or political parties. Throughout the history of democratic elections in Aceh, the 2017 election was the greatest battle for the ideological heirs of Hasan Tiro after GAM has been involved in politics. Four out of six candidates are known as former prominent figures of Aceh Free Movement (GAM) who can be classified into two categories, former combatants and non-combatants. The political competition tension requires the candidates to create the most effective tactics in the effort to gain the votes. Using the concept of political branding developed by Gelder, Sonies, and Mensah, this research aims to reveal the extent to which the social background differences of contestants influence the political branding presented during the 2017 Aceh Election campaign. From the analysis of verbal, visual, and vocal objects that were scattered and documented in various contestant’s official campaign channels, it is found that the different social backgrounds of these contestants have brought differences in self-identification, political products, and positioning in their political branding.

Abstract

This research aims to learn the extent to which the Aceh Besar's paralinguistic features affect the interpretation of the message by the students at Syiah Kuala University. The study employed the quantitative method by distributing questionnaires to 100 respondents in 10 faculties of Unsyiah selected using the stratified random sampling technique. The results show that the t value of the paralinguistic variable was 3,820 while t table was 1.984 at α = 5%.  The result indicates that t value (3,820) is greater than t table (1,984), thus Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that the Aceh Besar’s paralinguistic features positively and significantly affect the interpretation of spoken messages.

Abstract

Sharia news in the mass media often implies that the sharia implemented in Aceh is not tolerant of some groups. This study aims to explore the reception by Aceh audiences towards sharia news in the national online media, Kompas.com from 2014 to 2016, as well as to know the factors behind the audience in making meaning. Aspects of the sharia coverage that become the object study in this research are the image of sharia, the efforts of local governments in implementing sharia law, the role of Islamic scholars in the enforcement of sharia, the image of sharia police, and the position of women in the implementation of sharia. The main concept used is encoding/decoding by Stuart Hall. This research used constructivism paradigm with reception analysis method. The interpretation of the same news made by the seven participants on five aspects is widely varied according to the framework of knowledge and experience of each informant. The most dominant reading position occupied by informants is oppositional reading, followed by negotiated reading, and very few informants in dominant reading position. The differences of reading positions are influenced by sociological, psychological, and media habit factors of each informant.

Abstract

The crisis is a thing that must be considered by an institution or a company because the crisis will have an impact on the decline of reputation. But the crisis can also be an opportunity to recognize the organization in improving the quality of the organization, both in internal and external performance. This article aims to describe how to build a reputation for the strength of Integrated Communication (IC) to face future crises. Reputation should be built as early as possible to become a weapon against future crises. Institutions should be able to integrate all the components within the elements of communication and build good relationships with existing stakeholders. Building strategic relationships with stakeholders can be achieved by making innovations to overcome crisis management in their organizations. One of the efforts is to focus more on Integrated Marketing Communications.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the motivation of youngAcehnese mothers to join the Hijabersmom Community (HmC) and the social identity created in the community. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. Primary data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews. Secondary data is collected through books, literature, brochures, websites, and other relevant documents. Informants in this study were 7 Muslim women who are members of Hijabersmom Community Aceh which includes the board and members. The results showed that the motivation of Acehnese mothers who joined in Hijabersmom Community community was the encouragement to study the science of religion and also socialize with the environment with a series of social activities as well as a means to actualize themselves through the potential and talents. While the social identity formed within this group is an exclusive group that refers to the image formation as the only community in Aceh that characterizes today's women in a fashionable and religious fashion.

Abstract

The burning church in Aceh Singkil on October 13, 2015 has caught the attention of local, national and even international media. The conflict motivated by the building permit issue required the media to expose the issue as it was. This study aims to get a picture of how Waspada Daily implemented peace journalism in reporting this case. The theory used in this research is peace journalism theory by Johan Galtung. The research used a quantitative approach with content analysis method towards 17 news articles published between 12 and 26 October 2015 which were selected based on purposive sampling techniques. Data were presented in the form of statistical frequency. The research findings show that the Waspada Daily news on the church burning in Aceh Singkil applied four categories of peace journalism by Johan Galtung and met all indicators in each category.

Abstract

This research examines the effect of interpersonal communication of external debt collector service to customer satisfaction level at PT. Clipan Finance Indonesia Surabaya Branch. The research used a simple correlational method in which the variable x is interpersonal communication external debt collector service and variable y is level of customers’ satisfaction. Researchers use survey by distributing questionnaire as data collecting technique. In the processing stage, researchers used editing, coding and tabulating. The data analysis technique used correlation analysis and simple linear regression analysis. The results showed that there was insignificant influence between interpersonal communication variables external debt collector service to the level of customer satisfaction of bad credit at PT. Clipan Finance Indonesia Surabaya Branch.

Abstract

This study aims to see the effect of political information obtained from mass communication and interpersonal communication to the voters’ quality of decision-making process in the 2009 Presidential Election. This study examines the causal relationship between five variables, namely media exposure, political socialization through primary groups, political engagement, central route, and peripheral route. The problem formulation is constructed based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) assumptions adapted to the electoral context. This study used cross-sectional survey towards 201 urban voters of Beji Sub-district who were selected randomly using multistage random sampling techniques. Data analysis techniques are univariate analysis with SPSS 17.0 and multivariate analysis with One-Step Approach Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method using Lisrel 8.71. The results show that the majority of voters in the 2009 presidential election used the irrational processing of political information through peripheral route. The study also shows that media exposure and political socialization through primary groups can be acted as antecedent variables to the correlational relationship between political engagement and political information processing.
