Abstract

In recent years the Islamic consumption trend has spread throughout the country. At first glance, this phenomenon seems encouraging, because physically the condition seems to describe an increase in religiosity in the midst of the society in an effort to fulfill their spiritual needs. But in other perspectives, actually, this phenomenon has created influence and emerged other interests. The euphoria of religious identity actualization, used by business people to make it as a commodity which is then used as a selling tool. Business and marketing practices are currently shifting and experiencing transformation, from level of rational intelligence (marketing 1.0) to emotional marketing (marketing 2.0) and ultimately to the level of spiritual intelligence (marketing 3.0). Using a literature study method, this article seeks to reveal how such business practices of religious commodification have a real impact on the shift in consumer understanding of their religious identity. The rise of Islamic culture in the midst of this public space also raised a new market segmentation known as the middle-class Muslim. As a consequence, the differences of religiosity and business becomes blurred; religious practices begin to be trapped in the symbolic framework which only prioritizes camouflage and mere imaging.

Abstract

The number of smokers among women in Indonesia is increasing every year, even though smokers are predominantly male. In order to educate the public about the negative impacts of tobacco consumption, the government has produced anti-smoking Public Service Advertisements (PSAs) aired on television. The information gap about smoking hazards is due to lack of anti-smoking messages which is unable to compete with the extensive and creative pro-smoking messages in many media platforms. The way people use media for information-seeking, such as messages about smoking, dictates how they look for the messages and helps to understand how they encounter messages the most. By interviewing 39 women in Banda Aceh and Jakarta, this study presents women’s opinion about television and the media preference for searching and gaining information about smoking. The findings show that participants of the study prefer to obtain information about smoking through the media—online social media than through television, such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Line, WhatsApp, and non-media like friends and their doctor’s advice. Given the substantial cost of television health campaigns, the study findings can provide input on alternative media in communicating about the harms of smoking.

Abstract

Film as part of mass communication has a considerable influence on the formation of opinions that occur in society. One of the best-selling films in 2008 was the film Ayat-Ayat Cinta. This research was carried out with assumptions about the existence of ideological battles that took place in a media discourse and representation of women in a film. The purpose of this research was to find out the representation of women in the film Ayat-Ayat Cinta through events in film stories that were commodified by cinematographers and audiences. The type of research method used is qualitative descriptive research analyzing media content with critical discourse analysis methods by Sara Mills. The research was conducted by dissecting the text in the film, looking at the subject-object position and the producer-reader position in climax scenes, to see how women are represented in the scenes. The results showed that the film still uses male perspectives in viewing the events; women are still represented more as objects than subjects; women are still viewed from the perspective of other parties (mostly men); the film leads the audience to identify themselves with male figures; and this film still affirms the patriarchal ideology

Abstract

Social marketing as a method encourages behavioral change in individuals for a better life by adopting concepts and principles in commercial marketing. Changes of individual behavior are influenced by social contexts that cannot be separated from the role of the upstream actors (parties who have influence in the policy-making process). In accordance, targeting upstream actors for social marketing activities has become a challenge. Therefore, social marketers need to communicate creatively with upstream parties to support their social marketing goals. This conceptual article aims to explain the importance of moving upstream as a concept and describes the use of online petitions as an alternative platform for media advocacy establishing an upstream social marketing strategy. It is argued that the development of information and communication technology offers an online petition platform for reaching upstream parties. Through a study of literature method, this article presents a case of online petition Change.org Indonesia which is supported by the media and policymakers. Change.org Indonesia has been actively developing media advocacy through the press conference, press release and press note, social media, and offline actions or events to influence policymakers in order to create a supportive environmental condition for behavioral change.
