Abstract

This study examines whether the strategic choice of earnings management chosen by top management (such as CEO and CEO and a team separately) is related to characteristics of top management (i.e., genders, age, tenure, financial expertise, business experience, and education). This study employs regression analyses to analyse 707 firm-year observations of manufacturing companies listed in the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) between 2010 and 2018. This study found that top management team tended to choose the strategic choice of real-based earnings management. Meanwhile, top management individually, both CEO and CFO tend to choose accrual earnings management strategies over real activity-based earnings management. These results are inline with upper echelon theory and financial reportpreparation and mechanism in companies, especially in selecting and appointing top-level executive.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of environmental uncertainty as an antecedent to the relation of investment decision with firm’s performance. This study applies a comprehensive measure of environmental uncertaity. Using data from listed companies on Indonesian Stoct Exchange (IDX) for the period of 2009-2012, with purposive random sampling method and Two Stage Linear Regression (TSLS) method, this study found that the environmental uncertainty positively affects the managers’ investment decision. Moreover this study documented that the managers’ investment decisions, which taken by considering environmental uncertainty condition, increase the level of firm’s financial performance. This study provides empirical evidence of antecedence effect of environmental uncertainty on the relationship of investment decision and firms’ performance. The findings suggest that environmental uncertainty makes manager to take better investment decision, and it will eventually affect the firms’ performance.

Abstract

This study aims to examine determinants of zakat payers’ (muzakki) interest to pay zakat through Zakat Management Organization (ZMO). The respondents were randomly selected from muzakki who paid their zakat on profession/income through ZMOs in Indonesia resulting in 100 respondents. Using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) method, this study found that transparency of zakat management, ZMO promotions using public figures, and supporting regulation which imposes zakat as a tax deductible expense have significant impact on muzakki's interest to pay zakat through ZMO. Meanwhile improvement of digital services and socialization of zakat through social media do not have significant effect on muzakki's interest. However, using sub-sample who are active users of social media, this study discovered a negative effect of social media usage on muzakki’s interest. This finding reinforces the suitability of Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in the context of muzakki's behavior to pay zakat which is influenced by the quality of ZMO services.

Abstract

This research investigates the influence of financial reporting quality, tax avoidance, and debt maturity on investment efficiency in Indonesia. This study also examines the role of corporate social responsibility disclosure as a moderating variable. Samples of manufacturing companies listed in Indonesia between 2014 and 2019 were selected (414 observations). Using panel regression, this study unveiled a positive effect of financial report quality, while a negative effect of tax avoidance and debt maturity on investment efficiency. Corporate social responsibility disclosure fails to moderate the impact of financial report quality and tax avoidance on investment efficiency. In contrast, corporate social responsibility disclosure strengthens the influence of debt maturity on investment efficiency. This study suggests that the Indonesian Tax Authority needs to improve its supervision on Indonesian companies to suppress tax avoidance by companies that may reduce investment efficiency.

Abstract

The paper is motivated by the realization of the absent of critical engagement research problematizing the mainstream accounting worldview within accounting textbooks in the context of Indonesia. By doing so, this study uses the Thompson’s (1990) Schema of analyzing ideology to examine the content of popular introductory financial accounting (IFA) textbooks adopted by universities to reveal how, and the extent to which, the ideological status quo is reflected within these texts. This means the analysis tries to understand how ideological meaning is constructed within the textbooks. The analysis shows that the investigated textbooks portray accounting as an abstracted notion of a practical and calculative tool. Meanwhile, the ideological assumptions and socio-political and cultural background and conflict inherent in accounting are concealed and obscured. The textbooks have not scrutinized the concepts and measurement of accounting beyond employing a shareholder perspective. Consequently, the users’ attention is deflected from or glossed over the underlying ideological nature of the textbooks
