Abstract

The content of humic acid in the soil is important to determine because humic acid plays a very important role in influencing soil fertility, soil and water chemistry. The use of commercial humic acid is one way to improve the condition of degraded soil and minimize the possibility of losing nutrients from organic fertilizer due to leaching or evaporation. The humus extraction process produces commercial humic acid whose content differs according to the region where the humus is sourced. The content of commercial humic acid is determined gravimetrically, but in this study the humic acid content of commercial humic acid was determined by comparing two analytical methods, namely gravimetry and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. In this research, wet extraction of humic acid was carried out using a mixture of 4% Na4P2O7 and 0.1N NaOH. The average value of humic acid content determined using the gravimetric method was 64.9396% and 29.5193% when tested using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. Based on the CoA (Certificate of Analysis) the standard value of humic acid is 50%, so it is concluded that for determining humic acid contents by the gravimetric method is better than the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method.

Abstract

Torch ginger (Etlingera elatior) contains secondary metabolites that have antibacterial potential. The production of torch ginger extract in Indonesia is still limited. However, market demand increase because pharmaceutical industry is starting to use the torch ginger extract. Furthermore, the growing utilization of torch ginger will enhance the economy of torch ginger farmers. This study aims to compare the extraction efficiency of maceration and soxhletation methods in obtaining bioactive compounds from torch ginger using ethanol, methanol and n-hexane as solvents. The results showed that in the maceration method, ethanol solvent produced the highest yield of 15%, methanol 7% and n-hexane 3%. In soxhletation method, ethanol and methanol solvents produced yields of 15% and 13% respectively, higher than n-hexane only 1%. Overall, soxhletation method with ethanol solvent was the best condition for torch ginger extraction. GC-MS characterization showed the presence of bioactive compounds such as 2-Chloropropionic acid, Boric acid trimethyl ester, Silane dimethoxymethyl and Octadecanoic acid methyl ester which contribute to the antibacterial activity in torch ginger essential oil.

Abstract

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) contributes greatly as a precursor to a number of harmful secondary air pollutants including nitric acid, the nitrate portion of secondary inorganic aerosols and oxidants including ozone. Nitrogen dioxide gas (NO2) is an ambient air pollutant along with the element nitrogen monoxide (NO) which is usually produced from human activities such as burning vehicle engine fuel, burning rubbish, burning coal and industry. This research aims to monitor the quality of air pollution in industrial areas in East Jakarta. The NO2 content in the air can be determined using the UV-Vis spectrophotometer method based on SNI 7119-2: 2017. The principle of NO2 testing uses a UV-Vis spectrophotometer based on SNI 7119-2: 2017. From the results of the tests carried out, it can be concluded that the NO2 level obtained in sample 1 was found to be 25,153 µg/Nm3, in sample 2 the NO2 level was 28,371 µg/Nm3, in sample 3 the NO2 level was 107,022 µg/Nm3, in sample 4 the NO2 level was 29,720 µg/Nm3. Nm3, and in sample 5 the NO2 level was 83.446 µg/Nm3. Based on PP RI No. 22 attachment VII of 2021 concerning air pollution control, the quality standard for NO2 is 200 µg/Nm3 for 1 hour. So it can be concluded from the results of the tests that have been carried out that the NO2 levels in the environment are still below the quality standard, which means that it is not a source of NO2 pollution, is safe and meets the requirements for human health and the environment.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the effect of adding sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on the number of E. coli and Total Coliform bacterial colonies in industrial wastewater using membrane filters. The prepared wastewater is added with NaOCl with concentration variations 0 ; 0.5 ; 1 ; 1.5 ; 2 ; 3 ; 4 ; 5 ppm. The vacuum pump and filter membrane are placed in laminar air flow and the filtration process is carried out. The filtered membrane paper was placed into a petri dish containing CCA agar media and incubated for 24-48 hours at a temperature of 35oC with the petri dish upside down. Reddish pink colonies indicate colonies of Coliform bacteria, while dark blue or violet colonies are colonies of Escherichia coli bacteria. The results showed that the number of E. coli bacteria at NaOCl concentrations of 0 ppm to 5 ppm was 0 cfu/100 mL and Total Coliform was obtained at NaOCl concentrations of 0 ; 0,5 ; 1 ; 1,5 ; 2 ; 3 ; 4 dan 5 ppm is cannot be Calculated, 96 ; 74 ; 53 ; 31 ; 19 ; 3 and 0 cfu/100 mL.

Abstract

The crumb rubber SIR 20 originating from the processing of natural rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) plays a crucial role as a primary export commodity in the Indonesian economy. Due to its diverse applications in consumer products and medical devices, natural rubber possesses unique properties such as resilience, elasticity, and wear resistance. The drying process of natural rubber at high temperatures significantly affects its plasticity and strength. This research explores the influence of temperature (130-155°C) and drying time (77-110 minutes) on the plasticity of crumb rubber SIR 20. The results indicate that the PRI (Plasticity Retention Index) values still meet quality standards within certain ranges. The optimal PRI value of 75-76% is obtained at a temperature of 130-135°C for 77 minutes. Increasing the operating temperature and drying time leads to a significant decrease in PRI values due to thermal oxidation occurring in the molecular structure of rubber, thereby affecting the quality of crumb rubber. The findings from this study on the impact of temperature and drying time can provide technical information for the rubber industry to maintain product quality while minimizing environmental impact.
