Abstract

Obesity is a global public health issue and the prevalence of obesity is growing worldwide every year. Studies have been performed since the early 1970s on the association between obesity and depression or other psychological disorders. In Indonesia, however, only a small number of studies have been carried out. The aim of this study was to examine whether obesity was associated with depression in a sample of women with overweight and obesity based on their BMI, anti-obesity treatment experience, and age among women in one province in Indonesia. Women aged 18 years and older who were selected from fitness centers in urban area of Yogyakarta province and self-reported BMI categorized as overweight and obese were eligible to participate. Voluntary participation in study survey was consented. A set of questionnaire consisting demographic characteristics and depression symptoms was developed and validated. Depression was assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), with a score of ≥10 used to indicate severe depression. Respondents who classified as overweight mostly had minimal depression level (33.58%) and none had severe depression level, whereas respondents who classified as obese mostly had moderate depression level (44.74%) and 3.95% had severe depression level. This study found that BMI, experience of using anti-obesity drugs, and age of respondents were significantly affected PHQ-9 score. Thus, these factors determined the level of depression among women surveyed. The study reported significant association between obesity and depression among women. This association depends on BMI, anti-obesity treatment experience, and age variables. Approaches to public health to reduce the burden of obesity or depression have to consider the strong link between these two common conditions.

Abstract

Unavailability of drug in appropriate amounts on apt time at the desired site of action can lead to further complications in the diseases which can turn into more deadly condition. Timely delivery of right amount of drug is very crucial in proper therapy, thereby avoiding the adverse effects of the drug. Feedback regulated closed loop delivery system can controllably deliver the drug on demand which means the release rates can be increased, decreased or totally stopped, as a response towards physiochemical response produced by the body. The system can be designed in such a way that the concentration of the drug released from the system is proportional to the degree of stimuli produced by the body. Various diseases and disorders progress by feedback loop mechanisms, owing to which biochemical signal triggered delivery of drug can be achieved in such conditions. The system is also advantageous in case of some drugs whose fluctuation in plasma concentrations is unenviable. In the current work, self-regulated drug delivery devices designed for various conditions like diabetes mellitus, hypercoagulation, cancer, microbial infections and opioid poisoning are reviewed. Various combinations of smart polymers are employed to design such devices that work by responding to the feedback produced by the body.

Abstract

Adolescence is a transitional period between childhood and adulthood, which begins at the time of sexual maturity, namely between the ages of 11 or 12 years to 20 years, namely before young adulthood (Soejiningsih, 2004). To be ready to enter adulthood, adolescents begin to get acquainted and deal with various adult problems. Biologically, adolescents already have the ability like adults, but psychologically they have not got the right to use these abilities. The occurrence of psychological changes causes confusion among adolescents. They experience emotional turmoil and mental stress so that they easily deviate from the rules and social norms that apply in society. The design of this study was an experiment with a Posttest Only Control Group Design approach. In the experimental design of this study, there were two groups selected randomly. One group acts as a control group and the other group acts as an experimental group. The population in this study were students of health cadres at SMP Negeri 1 Merak Urak, Tuban Regency in 2019/2020, with a sample size of 36 students. The sample of this research was some students of health cadres at SMP Negeri 1 Merak Urak, Tuban Regency, with a sample size of 33 students. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. The independent variable of this research is the active learning process of adolescent reproductive health, the dependent variable of this study is the level of knowledge and self-confidence of adolescents. The research instrument used in this study was to use a modified adolescent reproductive health active learning process module and a questionnaire to measure the level of knowledge and self-confidence of adolescents in junior high school. Data analysis was used to determine the effect of the independent variable and the dependent variable with the Manova test, with an error rate of α 0.05. Hypothesis testing shows that the significance value for the treatment and control groups tested by the Pillai Trace, Wilk's Lamda, Hotteling's T and Roy's Largest Root procedures is 0.005

Abstract

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major health problem worldwide where130-150 million people are chronically infected with HCV, which progress to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. A total of 120 subjects were recruited to assess the correlation between gene polymorphisms (IL-10-1082 and -819) with the susceptibility to HCV infection in Iraqi patients by using allele specific PCR. The serum level of IL-10 was assessed by ELISA. Gene polymorphism results of IL-10-1082A/G (rs1800896) showed significant increase in AA distribution (P=0.0076) and allele A frequency (P=0.049) among the control group while AG distribution were significantly higher in patients (P=0.0082). Although, G allele frequency had but an association (P=0.049), but the homozygous GG mutant genotype had no significant differences between the two groups. While the genotype analysis of the second SNPs of IL-10-819C/T (rs1800872) showed that neither CC nor CT genotypes distribution were associated with HCV infection (0.1627 and 0.2559, respectively) but the TT distribution and allele frequency had a suggestive association in patients (P=0.0483 and 0.0257, respectively). Results of IL-10 serum levels were higher by two-fold in patients than in healthy controls. It appeared that the IL-10-1082 AA genotype had a protective effect against HCV infection but the TT genotype of -819 mutations had a suggestive association with susceptibility to infection with HCV in Iraqi patients. Such correlation may indicate a protective role for IL-10 and could be used as a predictive risk susceptibility biomarker for progressive infection with HCV. Abstract

The oral mucosa is an indicator that shows the state and functioning of internal organs and systems of the entire body. Inflammatory diseases of the oral mucosa are a pathology that affects patients of various ages. And it causes some discomfort to the patient and disrupts the usual rhythm of life. With a long course of this pathology, there is a violation of the endocrine glands, the immune system, and against the background of a painful symptom, psycho emotional tension may occur. The inflammatory process on the oral mucosa can be caused by factors such as bacterial, viral, fungal, and others. Regardless of the etiological factor, the inflammatory process itself does not pose a threat to the patient's life, even in spite of the etiological factor, although it complicates it. However, in the absence of treatment and prolonged course, it can lead to malignancy of the process. This is facilitated by the constant impact on the pathological focus of mechanical, chemical and thermal stimuli when eating. Also, if the patient has chronic somatic diseases that occur against the background of a decrease in immunological protection, the threat increases.
