Abstract

Ginseng bugis (Talinum panicullatum Gaertn.) leaf is traditionally used in the treatment of diarrhea, ulcers, wounds and skin infections by the people of South Sulawesi province. The leaves contain chemical compounds such as saponins, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids and triterpenes which can be a source of antioxidants and bactericidal. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial activity of ginseng bugis leaf extract against the microbes. The test microbes used were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Propionibacterium acnes, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans which has been matured. The antimicrobial activity test used agar well diffusion method with ginseng bugis leaf extract solution with a concentration variation of 0.1%; 0.5%; 1%; 2%; 4%; 8%; 16%; and 32%. The inhibition zone observations were carried out on bacteria incubated at 37oC for 24 hours and fungi incubated at 25oC for 72 hours. The results of the inhibition zone measurement showed that the higher the concentration of the test solution for the ethanol extract of ginseng bugis leaves, the greater the inhibition zone given. Based on the results, the ethanol extract of ginseng bugis leaves had antimicrobial activity at the minimum inhibitory concentration of 1% against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Propionibacterium acne, Candida albicans and a minimum inhibitory concentration of 4% against Streptococcus mutans. Keywords: Antimicrobial, Ethanol Extract, Talinum panicullatum Gaertn.

Abstract

Background: The CRUSADE bleeding risk score is an accurate and robust risk-stratification tool for predicting hemorrhagic complications in patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS). However, studies assessing and validating this score especially within Indian population are scarce to almost non-existent. Objective: To evaluate the Crusade Bleeding Score in predicting the risk of bleeding events in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a secondary care hospital in Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 72 patients with ACS on treatment with anti-thrombotics that fulfilled the inclusion criteria of the study were prospectively recruited. The patient’s demographic data along with their past medical history pertinent to the study was collected and the scores for each patient was calculated. Results: Significant major bleeding was found among considerably older, female patients, diabetic and hypertensive patients, as also among patients having lower GFR values. Five patients classified under the Very High-Risk Category of the CRUSADE bleeding score further went on to develop hemorrhagic complications thereby validating the score among the study population. Conclusion: The CRUSADE bleeding score was found to be an accurate predictor of bleeding events within our study population with good validity. We further recommend the suitable use of the CRUSADE bleeding risk score in clinical practice as there is a need for stronger evidence to support the use of risk stratification systems to optimize therapy and improve patient outcomes in India.

Abstract

Objective: This study was done to estimate and compare the levels of Elastase in Saliva, GCF & Serum of smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis. Materials and Method:125 male subjects in the age group of 21-50 years were enrolled and categorized as Group 1, Non-smoking subjects with healthy periodontium Group 2, Smoking subjects with healthy periodontium Group 3, Non-smoking subjects with Chronic periodontitis Group 4, Smoking subjects (10 Cigarettes/day) with Chronic periodontitis. Plaque Index, Gingival Bleeding Index, Probing Pocket Depth, Clinical Attachment Level, Salivary, GCF and Serum Elastase levels were recorded and evaluated using sandwich ELISA method. Results: The clinical parameters expressed a significant difference between diseased group and healthy group. Elastase levels (Saliva, GCF and Serum) showed significant difference between diseased group and healthy group. In between the diseased group comparison, GCF and Saliva showed Lower Elastase levels in smoking periodontitis group. Whereas, Serum showed higher Elastase levels. Conclusion: Elastase can be used as a reliable biomarker for smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis to denote disease activity. Keywords: Periodontitis; Smoking; Elastase; Saliva; Gingival crevicular fluid.
