Abstract

A settling pond is an important facility in mining operations used to remove suspended solid particles so that wastewater quality complies with environmental standards. This study aims to analyze the effect of settling pond depth variations on flow velocity and TSS (Total Suspended Solids) removal efficiency at the settling pond of PT. Daka Group, North Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. The research methods included primary and secondary data collection, hydrological analysis, TSS testing, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation using ANSYS Fluent. A pond depth of 2 m was used as the existing condition, while a depth of 3 m was evaluated as an alternative scenario to assess potential improvements in TSS removal performance and to provide recommendations for pond design optimization. The results showed a design rainfall of 80 mm/day, rainfall intensity of 11.65 mm/hour, and a maximum runoff discharge of 0.82 m³/s. Laboratory analysis indicated that the outlet TSS concentration was 53 mg/L, which met the applicable environmental quality standards. CFD simulation results demonstrated that the 3 m deep pond produced a more stable flow pattern and lower flow velocity than the 2 m deep pond. Based on Stokes’ Law calculations, the 3 m depth was more effective in removing TSS, with a sediment accumulation volume of 165.43 m³/day and a sediment dredging interval of 23 days. These findings indicate that increasing the pond depth to 3 m has the potential to improve TSS removal efficiency and can be recommended for optimizing mine water management.

Abstract

The presence of abnormal pore pressure zones in the South Sumatra Basin represents a significant technical challenge in drilling operations, with the potential to trigger serious incidents such as kicks and blowouts if not accurately predicted in advance. This study aims to estimate pore pressure values, characterize overpressure generation mechanisms, and identify their spatial distribution in the "GEO" Field, South Sumatra Basin. Pore pressure estimation was conducted using the Eaton method based on sonic log data through the construction of a Normal Compaction Trend (NCT) curve across four drilling wells, which was subsequently integrated with Gas While Drilling (GWD) data analysis as an independent validation approach. The results identified two genetically distinct overpressure mechanisms operating at different stratigraphic levels. Loading mechanism overpressure zone, attributed to disequilibrium compaction was consistently identified in association with the Air Benakat Formation and Gumai Formation intervals at depth ranges of 530–1,623 mTVD, with pore pressure values ranging from 797 to 2,811 psi. Unloading mechanism overpressure zone, characterized by distinctive sonic log and resistivity reversal phenomena, was identified within the Talang Akar Formation interval, with pore pressure values ranging from 1,254 to 2,893 psi, consistently higher than those observed in the loading zone. The spatial distribution of both overpressure zones is regional in nature and stratigraphically consistent across all analyzed wells. These findings provide a scientific contribution as the primary basis for optimizing drilling mud weight planning and casing design, thereby effectively mitigating Non-Productive Time (NPT) risks in future drilling operations at the "GEO" Field.

Abstract

Landslide susceptibility assessment is essential for supporting geological hazard mitigation in hilly urban areas where slope morphology, lithological conditions, structural discontinuities, rainfall, and land-use dynamics interact. Hulonthalangi District, Gorontalo City, is characterized by steep hillslopes, variable lithology, structural lineaments, and settlement development along slope areas. This study aims to delineate landslide susceptibility zones using an integrated Geographic Information System and Analytical Hierarchy Process approach. Eleven conditioning factors were considered, including slope, rainfall, geology, distance from lineament, distance from stream, soil type, topographic wetness index, aspect, curvature, distance from road, and land use/land cover. The AHP weighting indicates that slope, rainfall, geology, and distance from lineament are the dominant factors controlling slope instability. The resulting landslide susceptibility map consists of five classes: very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. The high susceptibility class occupies 4.636413 km² or 45.44% of the study area, while the very high class covers 0.711134 km² or 6.97%. These zones are mainly associated with steep hillslopes, weathered and fractured lithology, proximity to structural lineaments, and areas affected by surface-water concentration. The generated susceptibility map provides a scientific basis for land-use control, slope management, infrastructure planning, and landslide mitigation in Hulonthalangi District.

Abstract

Mercury (Hg) pollution caused by small-scale gold mining activities poses a serious environmental threat due to its toxic nature, tendency to accumulate, and ability to contaminate water and soil. This study aims to analyse the chemical and morphological characteristics of activated carbon derived from the roots and rhizomes of the snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) as a biosorbent, to determine its adsorption capacity in reducing mercury levels in gold mine tailings, and to investigate the influence of biosorbent mass and contact time on adsorption capacity. SEM characterisation results showed that activated carbon had more open pores than unactivated carbon. FT-IR analysis identified the presence of active functional groups, namely –OH, C=C, C–H and C–O, which play a role in the adsorption of mercury ions. The moisture content test yielded a result of 9.2639%, which meets the SNI 06-3730-1995 standard, while the ash content was found to be 17.5682%. Analysis using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) showed that the initial mercury concentration in the tailing waste was 0.0263 mg/L and could be reduced to 0.0132 mg/L with 1 g of biosorbent, 0.0045 mg/L with 3 g, and 0 mg/L with 5 g of biosorbent after 360 minutes of contact time.

Abstract

This study was conducted in Hulawa Village, Buntulia District, Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo Province, located within the North Arm of Sulawesi, an area known for its epithermal mineralization potential. The research aims to analyze the relationship between geological structures and mineralization patterns. The methodology involved geological surface mapping, structural measurements, lineament analysis, and stereographic interpretation using Dips 7.0 and WinTensor software. Geomorphologically, the study area consists of fault-controlled mountainous and hilly terrains. The identified lithologies include Lapilli Tuff, Porphyritic Rhyodacite, Rhyodacite Breccia, Dacite, Biotite Dacite, and Diorite. Structural analysis indicates that the area was affected by a principal compressional stress (σ1) trending Northwest–Southeast (NW–SE), which generated conjugate fracture systems oriented NW–SE and Northeast–Southwest (NE–SW). These structures acted as conduits for hydrothermal fluid migration. Two dominant vein orientations were identified: NE–SW trending oxidized quartz veins in the northeastern area and NW–SE trending sulfide-rich stockwork veins containing pyrite and chalcopyrite in the southwestern area. Geochemical analysis shows that Cu, As, and Mo anomalies are spatially associated with structural zones, indicating strong structural control on hydrothermal fluid circulation and mineral deposition. Overall, mineralization in the Hulawa area is interpreted to be controlled by conjugate fracture systems and strike-slip fault structures

Abstract

Donggala Regency has diverse morphology, encompassing coastal areas and complex hilly terrains. Geomorphological studies are essential for understanding landforms and assessing the potential for related natural disasters. This study aims to identify dominant landforms and assess natural disaster vulnerability, including landslides, tsunamis, and liquefaction, using a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based approach. The methods employed in this research include the analysis of topographic maps, satellite imagery, and a review of literature on geological conditions. The results indicate that coastal areas are highly vulnerable to tsunamis, while hilly regions are more susceptible to landslides.

Abstract

This study was conducted in Taludaa Village with the objective of analyzing geological conditions, including geomorphology, lithology, and geological structures, as well as assessing the geodiversity potential of the waterfall geosites using Brilha’s (2015) classification. The methodology involved surface geological surveys, laboratory analysis, and studio processing. Results show that the geomorphology of the study area comprises two units: structural hills and an alluvial plain. The stratigraphy consists of andesite, granodiorite, and alluvial deposits. Geological structures identified include tension joints caused by compression stress and an oblique fault trending southeast–northwest. At Station ID43, a normal right-slip fault with a dip angle of less than 45° was observed. The geological history indicates tectonic activity from the Early to Middle Miocene, forming andesitic volcanic rocks of the Bilungala Formation, followed by Middle to Late Miocene granodiorite intrusion, and Holocene alluvial deposition continuing to the present. The geodiversity inventory identified two waterfall sites (Geosite 1 and Geosite 2). Both geosites demonstrate high scientific and educational value, moderate tourism value with a total score of 245, and very low vulnerability with a total score of 100. These findings highlight the significant scientific and educational potential of the Taludaa waterfalls, supporting their role in geoconservation and sustainable geotourism development in Gorontalo.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the coal quality features and geological conditions in Klasari Village, Moisegen District, Sorong Regency, South-west Papua Province. Coal in the study area occurs as intercalations within claystone units and exhibits physical characteristics indicating a low degree of coalification. Laboratory testing was conducted using proximate analysis to determine coal quality parameters, including moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, and fixed carbon. The results show moisture values ranging from 6.21 to 13.95%, ash content from 2.1 to 14.4%, volatile matter from 33.7 to 38.3%, fixed carbon from 6 to 6.9%, and calorific values between 3,379 and 3,710 kcal/kg. Based on the ASTM D388 classification, the coal from the study area is classified as lignite. These findings indicate that the coal was formed in a swamp–fluvial depositional environment under reductive conditions that were not favorable for further coalification processes. Therefore, the coal is considered low-rank and is more suitable for small-scale energy utilization or low-power industrial applications.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate slope stability along the relocated road section of Bulango Ulu Dam, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province. The research focuses on geological conditions, rock mass quality, and slope stability using Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Slope Mass Rating (SMR) methods based on scanline mapping data. Field investigations were conducted on four slope segments (AP1–AP4) by measuring discontinuity characteristics, rock strength, spacing, and groundwater conditions. The results indicate that the rock mass quality of all slope segments falls into Class I–II of the RMR system, categorized as very good to good rock, with RMR values ranging from 70 to 83. SMR analysis shows that all slope segments belong to Class II, indicating stable slope conditions. Kinematic analysis reveals that the dominant potential failure mechanism is toppling failure, with probability of failure values ranging from 10.00% to 23.97%.Although the slopes are classified as stable, the presence of geological structures, particularly discontinuities, contributes to potential instability under certain conditions. Continuous monitoring is therefore recommended to mitigate future landslide risks. The findings provide important insights for slope stability evaluation and infrastructure safety planning in mountainous regions.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the lithological characteristics, texture, and elemental composition of lateritic nickel deposits in Block X, Wolo District, Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province. The analysis focuses on Ni, Fe, MgO, and SiO₂ contents based on geochemical exploration data obtained from PT Ceria Nugraha Indotama. Data processing was carried out through composite data analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, and visualization using histograms, scatter plots, and ternary diagrams. The results show that the lateritic nickel deposit in the study area can be divided into three main zones: limonite layer, saprolite layer, and bedrock. The limonite layer is characterized by high Fe content (28.65–40.33%) and a clayey texture, while the saprolite layer exhibits higher concentrations of Ni (0.08–2.10%) and MgO (10.29–32.20%) with fine to coarse sandy texture. Intensive laterization processes under humid tropical conditions play a crucial role in the formation, differentiation, and enrichment of lateritic nickel deposits in this lokasi.
