Abstract

Abstract This study deals with the improvement of the students’ achievement by using Outline technique. This research was conducted by applying classroom action research in two cycles. The subject of this research was one of a class in the first year student of SMU Yayasan Pendidikan Sultan Iskandar Muda. There were 35 students that participated in this research. The quantitative and qualitative data were gahtered in administrating  writing test and diary notes. The result of quantitative data obtained that the score of the students inproved from cycle I to cycle II which the mean of the pre-test was 70.6, the test of cycle I was 75.8, and the test of cycle II was 85,2. The result of the quanlitative data described that the using of the Outline technique help to improve the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph.   Key Words : writing, writing achievement, paragraph, outline, references.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was carried out to discover students’ speaking competence in reporting a procedure text by using video. It was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject was students of Grade X, State Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri: SMAN) 5 Binjai, which consisted of 42 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments used to collect the data were speaking tests as quantitative data and Observation Sheet, Interview, Questionnaire, and Diary Notes as qualitative data. The results of the speaking tests showed that the students’ score improved in every test. The mean of the students’ score in Orientation test was 51.17, the mean of the students’ score in Cycle I was 69.05, and the mean in Cycle II was 80.31. The mean score in Cycle II was the highest, so it can be said that the students’ speaking competence improved from 51.17 to 80.31. Based on the Observation Sheet, Interview, Questionnaire, and Diary Notes, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well. The findings of the study indicate that using Video significantly improved the students’ speaking competence. So, English teachers are suggested to use Video in order to improve the students’ speaking competence in reporting a procedure text.   Keywords: Video, Speaking, Procedure text, Action research

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the improving students’ speaking achievement in agreement and disagreement expressions by using problem solving strategy. The objective of this study is to find out whether students’ speaking achievement in expressing agreement and disagreement improved by problem solving strategy. The effectiveness of problem solving strategy are to make the students able to help them in solving their own and friends’ problems, especially classmates’ problem by expressing agree or disagree to the solution made and students be more active in the classroom. The findings of this study are important and useful for English teachers to improve students’ interest and ability in speaking by problem solving strategy and the researcher who wants to conduct the research related to this study. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was the second grade of SMP Swasta HKBP Sidorame Medan which consisted of 38 students. The research was conducted in two cycles, namely cycle I and cycle II. Each cycle consisted of the four steps of an action research: planning, action, observation and reflection. The instruments for collecting data used speaking test by interview and for the quantitative data and used diary notes, observation sheet and interview sheet for qualitative data. Based on the speaking test result, the students score kept improving in every test. In the orientation test the mean of the students’ score was 22.3. In the post test cycle I the mean of the students’ score was 56.3 and in the post test cycle II the mean of the students’ score was 85. Based on the observation sheet, diary notes and interview sheet, it was found that teaching learning process ran well. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing Analytical Exposition through Debate Technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI IPA-1 SMAN 1 Pancur Batu consisting of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and consisted of six meetings. The instruments for collecting data were writing tests as the quantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet, and interview sheet as qualitative data. Based on the writing score, students’ scores kept improving in every test. In the first cycle test, the mean of writing score was 61,67. In the second cycle test the mean of writing score was 71,36. Based on diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that students were actively involved in writing process. The result of the research showed that Debate Technique can improve students’ achievement in writing Analytical Exposition.   Keywords: Debate Technique, Writing, Analytical Exposition, Action research

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was conducted as an attempt to improve students’ writing achievement in a procedure text by using Still Pictures. The method of the study was Classroom Action Research with two cycles and six meetings. The subject of the study was the students of Grade VII students’ MTs. S. Syahbuddin Mustafa Nauli. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consists of three meetings. The instruments for collecting data were taken from writing tests as quantitative data. The result shows the improvement of the students’ score from orientation test to Cycles I and II tests. The mean of the students’ score for orientation test as Test I was 50.41, Cycle I test was 66.25, and Cycle II test was 85.41. The total percentage of the improvement from Orientation test to Cycles I and II tests was 99.2 %. It can be concluded that the use of Still Pictures improves students’ achievement in writing a procedure text. The qualitative data taken from Observation Sheet and Diary Notes show that the students’ were enthusiastic and attracted in writing a procedure text because the Still Pictures encourage their creativities and ideas to write better. For English teachers, it is suggested to use Still Pictures as one alternative media of teaching writing a procedure text.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing procedure text through Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique. The result of writing test showed that the students score kept improving significantly. The mean of post-test I was 80,525 and the mean of post-test II was 92,98. The mean score of post-test II in cycle II was the highest. The mean of post-test I until post-test II increased significantly from 80,525 to 92,98. The students became active participants,  enjoyable, and enthusiatis in teaching and learning process through Think-Pair-Share (TPS) Technique. The result of the research showed the progress of achievement scores, it can be concluded that Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique gives contribution to improve students’ achievement in writing procedure text. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to improve students’ writing achievement in recount text through Think-Pair-Share Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VIII-1 SMPN 1 Pematangsiantar. The number of the students was 32 students, consisted of 5 males and twenty seven females. The research was conducted in two cycles and consisted of six meetings. The instruments for collecting data were writing tests as the quantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet, interview sheet and questionnaire sheet as qualitative data. Based on the writing score, students’ scores kept improving in every test. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the first test as a pre-test was 57.84, for the second test as a post test I was 73.56, for the third test as a post test II was 77.56. Based on diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that students were actively involved in writing process. The result of the research showed that Think-Pair-Share Strategy can improve students’ achievement in writing recount text.     Keywords: Think Pair Share, Writing, Recount text, Action research

Abstract

   Abstract The main objective of this study is to know how effective the use of Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts is. So this final project mainly aims at determining the effectiveness of using Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts. This study was conducted under the consideration that the students often get difficulties in describing something. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the writer designed an action research. The population of this study was the second grade students of SMP Negeri 29 Medan. The number of the subjects of this study was 37 students. During the research, the students becoming the subjects were taught by using Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts. There were two cycles in this action research. Each cycle consisted of four phases. Before giving treatments in those two cycles, the students were given pre-test. After each treatment in each cycle, the students were tested. And the last, they were given post-test and questionnaire. The main purpose of conducting it was to find out the validity and the reliability of the test as instrument. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts improved after a series of treatments given in the cycles. It can be seen by comparing the means of their tests. The mean score for the pre-test was 53.92, the mean score for test 1 was 70.27, while the mean score for the post-test was 80.08. It is clear that after applying Collaborative Writing in each treatment, the mean of each test improves and gets better. The use of Collaborative Writing technique is one of the ways to make students interest in studying English especially writing descriptive text. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in reading comprehension through team pair solo. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was class VIII2 MTs Al-jihad which consisted of 41 students. The research was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of four meetings and cycle II consisted of two meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (reading comprehension test) and qualitative data (diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet). Based on reading comprehension scores, students’ score kept improving in every reading comprehension test. Based on diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well. The students were active, interested, and enthusiastic in reading. The result of the research showed that team pair solo significantly improved students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Key Words: reading, reading comprehension, team pair solo

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was focused on the improvement of Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition through the application of collaborative writing strategy. The objective of this study was to find out whether collaborative writing strategy could improve Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition text. The study was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subjects of this study were students of Grade XI Class 2 of State Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri: SMAN) 4 Pematangsiantar consisting of 32 students. The study was implemented in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of data collection consisted of quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were taken from students’ written test and the qualitative data were taken from the interview, diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire. Based on the analytical exposition writing result, students’ score was 57.9. In the test of Cycle I, the mean score was 67, and in the test of Cycle II was 78.3. Based on the observation sheet, it was found that the teaching-learning process well done. The students were active and curious in writing. In line with the data, it was found that collaborative writing strategy can improve Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition text.
