Abstract

The research discussed about conversation analysis of turn-taking technique in œEllen Show talk show. Everyone should be familiar with œEllen Show this is one of the best popular talk show in American. The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the types of turn-taking techniques that used by the host of œEllen Show talk show by using Sacks (1974) in Garcia and Jacobs (2010) (2) to find out how the differences of turn-taking between male and female guests in œEllen Show talk show by using Pennebaker, J. W. (2007). The descriptive qualitative method is being used in this research. The data were derived from the dialogue script, which was transcribed from the video. The findings of the study revealed that: (1) there were three types of turn-taking current speaker select next, next speaker self-selection, current speaker continue. The highest frequency was current speaker select next. The host and guests in œEllen Show talk show used current speaker select next which appeared 21 times, next speaker self-selection was the second highest frequency which occurred 19 times, then the lowest frequency was current speaker continue produced by the host and guests which appeared 4 times in eight episodes. (2) In all eight episodes, women take more turns in talking seven times than males three times. The researcher recommends that future studies examine turn-taking from a variety of perspectives, such as how turn-taking is used in movies by gender or other factors. The researcher hopes that this study will be valuable to readers and future conversation analysis researchers.

Abstract

This study focuses on conflicts that were faced by Tanya Baskoro as the main character on the Critical Eleven movie, the aim of this study is to find out kinds of conflict that were faced by the main character of the movie, then to analyze the strategies used by the main character in dealing with the conflicts, and explaining the factors that lead the main character to use particular strategy in dealing with particular conflict. The study was conducted using qualitative design, where it started from identifying, classifying, tabulating, then analyzing the data, the data gotten from the statements and dialogues from the movie. Using theory from two experts it was found that the main character was faced with two types of conflicts, External and Internal Conflicts, the dominant kind of conflict occurred to the main character is Man-Against-Man conflict. The most used strategy of the main character to deal with the conflicts are Competing and Avoiding strategy.

Abstract

Principally, this research attempts to analyze the anxiety disorder on the main character of novel TheWoman In The Window by A. J. Finn. The objective of this study to find out 1) To investigate the causes ofanxiety disorder through to the main character in the novel based on the psychoanalytic approach bySigmund Freud. 2) To explain how the treatmentsdone by the main character to reduce her anxietydisorder in the novel and 3) To explain the reasons for the treatmentsdone by the main character in thenovel. The writer used qualitative design method in analyzing the data that focused on the textual data. Theinstruments for collecting data are readingtechnique, and writing technique. This research analyzesbyrelating the data with Freud™sPsychoanalysis theory. The results of theresearch show that 1) The causesanxiety disorder to the main character because have an accident in the past that make the sufferer becomestress, and post-traumatic stress disorder. 2) There are two treatments done by the main character toreduce her anxiety disorder that is medication and therapy. 3) The reasons for the treatments done by maincharacter because with healing through therapy and medication will be able to reduce the traumaexperienced by Anna Fox.

Abstract

This study tended to find out the kinds of signs, the realizations of sign and the reasons of signs were found in Parasite film. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data of the study were taken from Parasite film™s scene. The source of the data was Parasite film downloaded from Bioskop XXI. The result of the study showed that this film contained 33 semiotic signs. The data were analysed by using Peirce (1993). The result of the study found 10 icons, 17 indices and 6 symbols in Parasite film. The signs found in Parasite are realized in individual and social relations. The reason for signs used in Parasite were to identify visual signs, to show cause and effect, and to communicate metaphorical and non-metaphorical expressions.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the types of positive politeness strategy of the main character which represented in On the Basis of Sex movie. The descriptive qualitative method used to gain the findings of the data. The video recording used to gain transcription from the movie was the source of the data. From that findings, the data found were 90 utterances spoken by Ruth as the main character of the movie. And from those utterances, 29 represented as Positive Politeness which was 32,2%. The forms of positive politeness, Ruth represented 27 forms of positive politeness, with Question was the most dominant type of all with 8 amounts (29%), followed by Request 7 (26%), Disagreement with 6 (22%), Suggestion with 4 (15%) amount, and Rejection and Chasetisement shared 1 (4%). Thus, the writer found that positive politeness in the movie often emerged because the theme was about law school, court room, and national administration.
