Abstract

Administratively, the study area is located in Ngebel District, Ponorogo Regency, East Java Province, covering an area of 25 km² (5 × 5 km). The Ngebel area and its surroundings are characterized by the occurrence of several springs, including both cold and hot springs. The presence of these springs is widely utilized by the local community for daily needs. This study aims to assess spring water quality as a baseline alternative for water quality monitoring in the study area. The methods used to analyze water quality parameters are based on physical and chemical aspects, including Stiff Diagram and Piper Trilinear Diagram analyses. The data were processed using RockWorks 16.0 software to determine water quality types. Based on the Stiff Diagram and Piper Trilinear Diagram, spring water in the study area is dominated by calcium (Ca) as the major cation and bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻ + CO₃²⁻) as the dominant anion, indicating a calcium–bicarbonate water type. The high concentrations of Ca cations and HCO₃⁻ + CO₃²⁻ anions are influenced by the pyroclastic rocks composing the study area. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 492/MENKES/PER/IV/2010 concerning water quality standards, spring water quality in the study area varies. A small proportion of samples still meets the quality standards, whereas most samples—particularly hot springs—do not meet clean water quality standards due to acidic pH values, high electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids, as well as elevated concentrations of certain dissolved ions exceeding the permissible limits..Keywords: Ngebel, Springs, Water Quality, Lithological Control

Abstract

Geological conditions at the Kencana underground mine, a low-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit with intensive structural control, strongly govern the rock mass characteristics and opening stability. The lithology at the study site consists of andesite lava and quartz veins controlled by north-south to northwest-southeast trending faults, with alteration intensity varying across openings. This study evaluates the relationship between these geological conditions and rock mass quality and stability at four openings (08H, 09E, 14D, and 00B) using the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system and finite element method. Openings 08H and 14D, composed of andesite lava with propylitic alteration (chlorite and epidote), exhibit relatively preserved rock strength and are classified as fair rock. In contrast, 09E and 00B experienced intensive argillic alteration caused by acidic hydrothermal fluid interaction, converting primary minerals into soft, water-reactive clay minerals, resulting in poor rock classification with the shortest stand-up time and largest roof load. Finite element modeling results reinforce these findings, with local strength factor values without support ranging from 1.08-1.54 across the four openings. This study confirms that alteration type and the presence of geological structures are the primary factors controlling rock mass quality and support requirements at the Kencana underground mine.

Abstract

There are differences of argument for determining an oil family at South Sumatra Basin. The first opinion argues that oils were generated from source rocks that were deposited in fluvio-deltaic, shallow marine, and lacustrine environments. In other hand, there is also opinion argues that there are no evidences of source rocks or oils with lacustrine characteristic. The research area is located in the Jemakur-Tabuan Graben, which is considered as syn-rift basin and it is expected to find source rock with fluvio-deltaic, shallow marine, and lacustrine deposit characteristic. The source rocks and crude oils characterizations were conducted by geochemical analysis, including liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. The source rocks samples were taken from Lemat and Talangakar Formations. Carbon isotope and biomarker analyses were done on the 15 and 14 source rock samples, respectively. Crude oil characterisation was performed in Jemakur-Tabuan Graben, which consist of 15 and 16 samples for carbon isotope and biomarker analyses, respectively. Furthermore, correlation between source rock and crude oil, as well as crude oil to crude oil, was carried out by interpreting the carbon isotope and biomarker data. Geochemical analysis concluded that there is an oil family with lacustrine characteristic in the research area. However, the oil was not generated from source rock of Lemat and Talangakar formations. Source rocks of Lemat and Talangakar Formations show the characteristic of deltaic deposits. There is no correlation between the source rocks (Lemat and Talangakar Formations) and crude oils in Jemakur-Tabuan Graben. The lacustrine source rocks in the research area (as evidenced by the presence of lacustrine oil) was interpreted from source rock of Benakat Formation.
