Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop an appropriate student’s worksheet forgrade eight students in order to assess students’ reading comprehension of recountmaterial using Kahoot! which is a game-based application. This study was carriedout at SMP Kemala Bhayangkari Medan. This study would be undertaken throughthe use of Research and Development (R & D) methods. The research would bebased on Borg and Gall's technique of Research and Development whichcontained six stages; gathering information and data, analysing data, designingmaterial, validating by the experts, revising material, and the last was finalproduct. The data was gathered through the distribution of questionnaire andinterviewed 27 students and an English teacher to see the students’ need. Thestudy's conclusion resulted in the development of the Kahoot! platform, whichmay be used as a worksheet for students to practice reading comprehension of therecount text. There were three aspects that are assessed for the feasibility test ofstudent worksheets by experts; presentation aspects, language aspects, and layoutaspect. In percentage terms, the average score of expert validations was 92.8%,the presentation aspect was 92%, the language aspect was 97%, and the layoutwas 100%. The average worksheet score was 95.4% which was categorized asvery good and it was suggested to use in English class especially for readingrecount text of grade eight.

Abstract

This study investigated teacher’s strategies in teaching reading comprehension of analyticalexposition text. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. Therespondents of this research were one English teacher and nineteen students of XI IPS 2 class inSMA Negeri 1 Bangun Purba. The instrument for collecting the data was a video recorder andquestionnaire dissemination. The teacher was observed and recorded when applied teachingstrategies in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text. Meanwhile, the students had tofill the questionnaire to state their problems towards the teacher’s strategies in teaching readingcomprehension of analytical exposition text. The result indicated that the teacher implied generalmethods such as introducing text, setting the reading purpose, skimming the text, translating thetext, answering question and identifying answer. Meanwhile, the most difficult strategyaccording to the students was skimming text. There were 11 of 19 students who stated thatskimming text was difficult since they did not possess good vocabulary mastery. The leastdifficult strategy was identifying answer. Based on the data, teacher might need to improve thestrategies to overcome students’ problems in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the use of video and analyze the reasons ofusing video in teaching and learning process especially in writing descriptive textfor tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat. This study was qualitativelyconducted that taken two english teachers of SMA Negeri 1 Stabat. The data werecollected by using recording, depth interview and observing the whole processesof teaching writing descriptive text. The findings of this study showed that theteacher 1 only used four ways from seven ways while the teacher 2 only usedthree ways from seven ways. The researcher used Berk theory in analyzing theteachers’ ways in using video in teaching descriptive text. There were reasons ofusing video in teaching and learning process that had gotten from teachers’interview. Then based on the data, the reasons dominantly were see and also hearthe language in use, be more active, creative, attractive, motivated, enjoyable, andthe important things by the video the student could master the material in goodenough. The findings of this study revealed that video contributed to the study offoreign language teaching especially teaching writing.

Abstract

This study deals with the Cunningsworth’s criteria in speaking materials in Englishtextbook used at the eighth grade. The objective of this study was to determine whetherthe speaking materials in the English textbook "When English Rings A Bell" meet the 6criteria for evaluation by Cunningsworth such as aims and approaches, design andorganization, language content, speaking skill, topic, and methodology. The researchdesign of this study was descriptive qualitative. The data were analyzed qualitatively. Thefindings of this study are calculated based on each criterion separately. The findings showthat speaking materials of "When English Rings the bell" English textbook fulfills thecriteria of good textbook suggested by Alan Cunningsworth's checklist with fulfillment75% for aims and approaches, 60% for language content and 60% for Speaking Skill.These 3 criteria can be categorized as Fair. The other criteria, 80% for design andorganization, 83% for methodology and 100% for topic. These 3 criteria can becategorized as Good. So, the researcher can conclude that the speaking materials arepresented well enough with an appropriate oral presentation and practice of languageitems for students’ language level. In terms of speaking ability, this textbook greatlyassists students in understanding the materials given. In addition, format design includestitles, subheadings, and appropriate cross-referencing for ease of use.

Abstract

The study aimed to develop learning media in Speaking Descriptive Text forGrade VII of Junior High School Students. This study used Research andDevelopment (R&D) design through six stages; gathering information and data,analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and finalproduct. The subject of the study was Grade VII of MTs Al-Washliyah Kolam.The instruments of data collection were gathered by administring interview anddistributing questionnaire. The study was conducted by interviewing the Englishteacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs.The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students need Englishlearning media which can motivate the students to understand about speakingdescriptive text. The product had been validated by the experts namely Englishlecturer and English teacher. The product result was Flashcard which ismodifying to playing game based on the rules game. The result of experts’validation showed that the media was an appropriate media to be used onspeaking descriptive text by getting the average percentage 95% categorizedexcellent.

Abstract

The study was aimed to find out and describe focus of the tasks in Englishtextbooks of 2013 curriculum. The researcher used Mileff’s (2009) theory. Thereare three kinds of focus of the tasks, namely skill focus, structure focus andnotional focus. The study used descriptive qualitative design and documentarytechnique to collect the data. The results of the study showed that the researcheronly found one kind of three focus of the tasks, namely skill focus (listening,reading, speaking and writing). In addition, there were four reasons found why thetasks focused on intensive listening, literal reading, responsive and descriptivewriting in the task, namely skill focus (listening, reading, speaking and writing).In addition, there were four reasons found why the tasks focused on intensivelistening, literal reading, responsive speaking and descriptive writing in the tasks.The first reason why the task focused on intensive listening was because to trainstudents’ hearing in getting more understanding of the text. The second reasonwhy the task focused on literal reading was because to make students retell andrecall the information presented in a text. The students acquired the informationdirectly from the text through comprehension question. Third reason why the taskfocused on responsive speaking was because to develop an appropriate shortresponse of students. The last, the reason why the task focused on descriptivewriting was because to help students clarify their understanding of new subjectmatter material.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find the readability level of reading texts in BahasaInggris textbook published by the Ministry of Education and Culture for the eleventhgrade of Senior High School of 2017 revised edition. This study is categorized as amixed method reseach which used the embedded design. It means that combines bothof qualitative and quantitative approach in one study. The data were collected byusing document analysis Flesch Reading Ease formula and Flesch Reading EaseScore were used as the instruments of this study to measure the readability level ofreading texts in Bahasa Inggris textbook of 2017 revised edition textbook. The resultof Flesch Reading Ease formula calculation was one text is in the Easy level; tworeading texts are in the Fairly Easy level; one text is in the Standard level; four textsare in Fairly Difficult level; and two reading texts are in the Difficult level. Thefindings of this study showed that from ten reading texts in Bahasa Inggris textbookof 2017 revised edition only four reading texts were readable for the eleventh gradestudents of Senior High School. They were which in Fairly Difficult level with scoreranged from fifty to sixty.
