Abstract

Mitra yang menjadi sasaran Kegiatan Pengabdian Penerapan Teknologi Tepat Guna adalah Perpustakaan Terapung Kampung Nelayan Seberang, Belawan, Provinsi Sumatera Utara dan SD Negeri 068009 Belawan. Berdasarkan observasi dan wawancara terdapat 4 masalah utama yang dihadapi mitra, antara lain: (1) ruangan perpustakaan yang tidak luas, (2) penataan buku terkesan berantakan, (3) kegiatan di perpustakaan hanya sebatas membaca buku dan (4) administrasi peminjaman buku yang masih manual. Berdasarkan permasalahan tersebut ditawarkan solusi,: (1) pendampingan penataan ruangan dan penyusunan buku, (2) pendampingan membuat rak buku yang lebih kuat dan efesien, (3) pengadaan gerobak pintar yang dapat berpindah-pindah, (4) pendampingan dan workshop dalam meningkatkan keterampilan literasi siswa, dan (5) membangun aplikasi perpustakaan terapung dan pangkalan data online. Target khusus dan luaran yang akan dihasilkan: (1) ruangan perpustakaan yang kesannya jadi lebih luas, (2) rak buku yang lebih kuat dan jumlah buku yang lebih banyak, (3) Gerobak Pintar (4) alat peraga bahasa,kumpulan syair dan melodi lagu wajib beserta alat musiknya, alat peraga sains dan matematika, dan (5) aplikasi untuk pengelolaan administrasi perpustakaan yang disebut “Aplikasi Pustaka Apungku”. Metode pelaksanaan program pengabdian akan dilakukan secara bertahap, berkelanjutan, dan komprehensif yang dilaksanakan melalui metode pendampingan dan workshop.Kata kunci: Literasi; Integrase; Pustaka Apungku; Pendampingan.AbstractThe partners who were targeted in the Appropriate Service Technology Application Activities were the Floating Library of the Seberang Fishermen Village, Belawan, North Sumatra Province and Belawan State Elementary School 068009. Based on observations and interviews, there are 4 main problems faced by partners, including: (1) library space that is not spacious, (2) book arrangement seems messy, (3) library activities are limited to reading books and (4) book loan administration still manual. Based on these problems, solutions are offered: (1) room management and book arrangement assistance, (2) assistance to make bookshelves more powerful and efficient, (3) procurement of mobile carts that can move around, (4) assistance and workshops in improving student literacy skills, and (5) building floating library applications and online databases. Specific targets and outputs that will be produced: (1) library room that seems to be more spacious, (2) stronger bookshelves and a greater number of books, (3) Smart Carts (4) language props, poetry collections and melodies compulsory songs with their musical instruments, science and mathematics teaching aids, and (5) applications for library administration management called "Apungku Library Application". The method of implementing the service program will be carried out in stages, in a sustainable, and comprehensive manner through the assistance and workshop methods.Keywords: Literacy; Integrase; Pustaka Apungku; Accompaniment.

Abstract

There were many studies discussed on the product of translation. Meanwhile, few researcher lazy to watch the process of translation. This paper, therefore, investigated a study on the processes when a translator performed the translation. The cognitive process played an important role in it. The aims of the study are to describe the think aloud protocols as one of the assessment to explore the translation behaviours or strategies in translation and to analyze cognitive processes that occur in the mind of postgraduate students when they did the translation. This research is also necessary to know the difficulties faced by the students when conducting the process of it. The study that involved fifteen participants, resulted to some difficulties, namely in translating lingual word unit, lingual phrase unit, and lingual clause unit. The overcome strategies were refers to a dictionary, knowledge of the subject (guessing), and the attention of local context and content. It is suggested that, although the think-aloud assessment has limitations, but it is an appropriate instrument for looking into the mental process of a translator.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the students’ feedback to the teachers’ performance in teaching recount text. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method through phases; gathering information and data and analyzing data. The subject of this research was at eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 35 Medan. The instruments for collecting data were students’ written feedback and questionnaire. The data then was analyzed by using checklist.. The results of the data analysis showed that there were 62,97% of students’ used the negative feedback in giving their opinions. There were only four of twenty seven students that could enclose at least five indicators of a good feedback.

Abstract

The study was conducted to establish listening media for Grade VII of Junior High School Students. Research and Development (R&D) was conducted in the study. Listening media was designed through six stages namely. (1) Gathering information and data; (2) analyzing data; (3) designing materials; (4) validating by experts; (5) revising; and (6) final product. The data were collected by conducting interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to one class of grade VII consisting of 30 students to get the students’ needs in improving listening skill. The interview and questionnaire results showed that the students needed English Listening Media which could motivate and encourage the students to speak actively in English since both listening and speaking are integrated each other. The authority had assessed the media produced. The outcome of the research was an E-learning media named Moodle Cloud. The rate of assessment of the product was 93.55%. Therefore all the features were categorized as a relevant and effective media in improving students’ listening skill.

Abstract

This study amis at establishing instructional material for the Subject of Seminar on English Language Teaching based on Flipped Learninng. In English Educational Study Program fifth semester students students of English Educational Study Program,  FBS, UNIMED. The study was conducted by utilizing  Research and Developmental Study There were three phases realized in this study: : First Survey and Evaluation Phase, second designing the  material and finally validating theinstructional  material. Based on the phases of the study followed, the following topics of instructional material were developed ; Foundation of Seminars, Some Key Terms s of Seminars and Paper Presentations, Analyzin  Topics for Seminar , Working out Pertinant  Topics, Establising  Paper Outline, Writing Paper Draft, Editing and Finalizing Paper, Designing Paper Presentations, Developing Power Point Presentation, Rehearsing Presentation, Paper Presentation, Running Productive Seminar. The feasibility test of teaching materials by the specialist. The findings indicated  that theoutcome of the study  established  were suitable pertinent and fit in with the students of  English Education Study Program with  the  mean 4.32.The material was upload to E-Learning FBS UNIMED to be utilized by the students.

Abstract

Industrial Revolution 4.0 has influenced many sectors, which are now a lot changes entering to human life by the presence of information technology.The use of power and data in the massive digital technology has become unlimited caused by its development at this present time. This study is aimed at developing the appropriate blended course materials of English for Specific Purposes for students of English Education Study Program, Languages and Arts Faculty, Universitas Negeri Medan. This study is focused on ESP Blended Learning Course Materials for Students of Seventh Semester of English Education Study Program. Research and Development (R & D) design is applied through six stages, there are 1). collecting information and data, 2). data analysis, 3). new materials design based on the needs analysis, 4). experts validation, 5). new material revision, and 6). final product. The instruments of collecting data are by applying two strategies: interview and questionnaires. The results show that the materials used in the 7th semester of English Education Study Program is developed through the implementation of the R&D simplification. The response of questionnaires signified low standard for the students after being analyzed. This results of the study developed ESP Blended Learning Course materials which focused on the following materials: Models and Teaching Strategies in ESP; Language Features: Linguistics and Grammar; Language Skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing); Genre Text in ESP (Descriptive Text, Procedure Text, Analytical Exposition Text, and Argumentative Text).

Abstract

This research aims to answer the three problem questions of this research, they are about types of questions are used by English teachers in teaching reading skill, teachers’ purposes in asking questions and students’ responses to the teachers’ questions. This research was conducted at SMA Free Methodist 2 Medan. The method of the study is qualitative descriptive, the subjects of this study were two english teachers and two classes of Grade XI at SMA Free Methodist 2 Medan. The data were collected by doing observation to the classroom, interview to the two English teachers, and record English teaching learning process. The result of this study showed that the two English Teachers in SMA Free Methodist 2 Medan commonly used all types of question in teaching reading skill, they are Question of Literal Comprehension, Question of Involving Reorganization or Interpretation, Question of Inference, Question of Evaluation, Question of Personal Response. After the reseacher analyzed the both teachers mostly used Question of Inference. The researcher also collect data about teachers’ purposes in asking the question to the students. Teacher 1 said his purpose is to know students’ understanding and Teacher 2 said that his purpose is involving students in teaching learning process. The researcher also analyzed students’ responses in two classes of grade XI, they are XI IPA 2 and XI IPS 2. The way teachers asked student in giving responses is by calling students’ name, pointing students and just a little raising hand. Only some students were active in giving responses even though in English or Bahasa Indonesia, those mostly used cognitive in answering the question from teachers.Key words: Teachers’ Questions, Students’ Responses, Reading Skill

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop learning media in Writing Descriptive Text for Grade VIII of Junior Highschool Students. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product.. The subject of the study was Grade VIII of SMP N 3 LubukPakam. The data were gathered  by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students needs English learning media which can motivate the students to understand about the descriptive writing. The product has been validated by experts. The result of the product was videos that contain audio-visual media to be used in mastering the descriptive text writing. Keywords: Cartoon Story Maker, Descriptive Text, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

The aim of this stuy was to develop writing speaking through media for eightth grade of Junior High School Student in SMP Swasta Panca Abdi Binjai. By using Research & Development design with six stages, they were Gathering Information and Data, Analyzing Data, Material Design, Validating by Experts, Revising, and Final Product. With 30 individuals responses as the data subjects through Interviews and Questionnaires. From the material, the first validator scored 75,8% of excellent, and the score from the second validator was 82,8%, and it was categorized as relevant. And from the media, 52% from the first validator, and 50% of the highest score from the second. In means that the media were valid and appropriate to use as learning media for students. The results of the product was Prezi Next as the presentation and learning online media for those individuals. Later on, the media was test using Recount Text as the measurement of the media to these subjects. This also leads to attractive media which introduced to help them motivated and keep interested. Thus, the media were valid and appropriate to use as learning media for students.Keywords: Prezi Next, Recount Text, Research and Development.

Abstract

The 2018 Program for International Student Assessment survey released in 2019 showed that the reading literacy HOTS skills of Indonesian students was low where Indonesia was ranked 74th out of 79 countries. .To improve students HOTS reading literacy the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education developed a Literacy Improvement Program at the National Junior High School level in 2021 using The Reading to Learn Approach. In this context, the objective of this research were to develop Students Worksheet Based on The Reading To Learn Approach to improve Students' Higher Order Thinking Skills on the Competence of Reading Narrative Texts. This research is part of research and development namely stage of needs analysis. The approach used was a qualitative approach. The study was conducted in MTsN 2 Medan. This study focused on the Needs analysis stage of teachers and students regarding the worksheet based on the reading to learn approach that is going to developed. The instrument to collect the data was interview The findings shows that most of the respondents expect the worksheet of Narrative Text should be developed based on their needs. They felt very hard to read the texts in English because the materials were irrellevant and not interesting. The students also confessed their current worksheet of Narrative Text was inappropriate for them and the process of learning was boring. Therefore, some of the aspects of learning also needed to be concerned such as learning style, learning technique, the way of doing the task, the length and topic of the texts, the situation of the class, the activities in the worksheet, and the difficulties of the students, in order to make the students easier to learn English.
