Abstract

This article deals with Javanese indecent words in relation to the state and activities to which such expressions can be applied. A careful study of the data elicited from two native informants shows that in addition to their ngoko and krama equivalents, indecent expressions are found in some things and activities in Javanese. The appropriate use of these indicent words should be understood in order to better understand the Javanese community, and to communicate better with them.

Abstract

Abstract

Berpacu Nasib di Kebun Karet, Kuli dan Doekoen report the lives of extravagant white settlers in contrast to the fate of coolies regarded as retarded and subordinated natives. The three novels give historical accounts of the planter community in East Sumatra. They narrate thecoolies’ mishandling on the basis of the author’s involvement on the narrated world. Berpacu, Kuli and Doekoen represent the Dutch imperial exploitative practices in the first half of the 20th century on rubber plantations in East Sumatra. Berpacu, kuli and Doekoen place coolies as being animalized and marginalized other. The three novels add to the long series of Dutch colonial literature justifying exploitation and mastery. Based on focalization analysis, the narrator might owed considerably to the idea of marginalization and racialism because she merely narrated what she had seen without any critical thinking and any sympathy toward the fate of the coolies.

Abstract

This study discusses changes in the value system in West Sumatera, especially those in the relationship between mamak and nephew in the matrilineal kinship system of the Minangkabau people, as portrayed in Wisran Hadi’s novel Tamu. The findings of this research show that there are parallel occurrences between Tamu and the condition of the Minangkabau people who are experiencing changes in the value system, especially in terms of the role of mamak in West Sumatera. The setting of Tamu is during the New Order around the 1990s. Political factors, i.e. development policies, during the New Order have contributed to the changes in this value system.

Abstract

This paper discusses level and gender descrimination in Tarian Bumi, a novel written by Oka Rusmini (2004). Level and gender descrimination can be seen through the differences in actions, statuses, and positions between the brahmana level and the sudra level, and between the male and female characters, not only in domestic issues, but also in publicissues. The differences in actions, statuses, and positions are manifest in the oppression of the weaker level (sudra and female) by the stronger level (brahmana and male). This paper adopts a feminist approach to investigate the level and gender descrimination as found in the novel.

Abstract

Social change is definite. The question is how soon it will take place, whether it will go in a positive or negative direction, and in what mode it will happen. Karl Marx believed that a new society is created through a social revolution. On the contrary, J. Krishnamurti proposed an inward revolution. It is interesting to compare these two ideas. Marx said that contradiction between the powers of production will provoke a social revolution. As for Krishnamurti, a social revolution without altering the soul will not alter human suffering. Which is prominent: social revolution or inward revolution? Valuable inspirations can be gained from comparing the two.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate factors and processes underlying religious conversion in marital life. The study adopts a qualitative method. The data were collected from three participants through semi-structured interviews. Results showed that religion conversion by the participants resulted from their desire to marry somebody having a different religion; the feeling of not meeting God in their former religion, which is related to the lack of religious values implanted early in life, and to life crises and conflicts.

Abstract

This article explores the relationship between the myth ‘Chang’e Flying to the Moon’ and the subject of family reunion at Mid-autumn festival. An analysis based on Claude Levi-Strauss’ structuralist theory reveals that the fairy tale is concerned with the origin of human death in order to teach descents of a family to be good to family members as one cannot become alive again when he/she is claimed by death.

Abstract

This paper aims at revealing the intrinsic aspect of the poem "Abun" (Elegy of a Father) and the inter-relationships among its aspects to discover the total meaning of the poem. The aspects include al-ma'nâ (ideas), al-'âthifah (emotion), al-khayyâl (imagination), lughatusy-syi'ir (language of poetry), and mȗsiqasy-syi'ir (rhyme and intonation). The meaning of the poem is to depict the sadness of a father because of being separated from his children. The sweet and bitter memories he has when he is with them is hard to forget. He always remembers the time when his children often argue with one another, cry and laugh together and compete with one another. All these he has to leave behind because his children have grown up and become independent.
