Abstract

Labor is a critical moment filled with anticipation, emotion, and physiological change for pregnant women. Pain during the first stage of labor is a natural process but often leads to physical discomfort and psychological distress, potentially prolonging labor and increasing complication risks. This community service program (PkM) was designed as an educational seminar aimed at promoting red rose-based aromatherapy as a non-pharmacological approach to alleviate labor pain in the first stage. The seminar involved 30 pregnant women as active participants and was conducted at Nining Pelawati Clinic. Educational content included an introduction to aromatherapy, the therapeutic benefits of red rose essential oil, its sensory mechanisms through the olfactory system, and the correct usage procedures according to standardized operational protocols. Participants’ knowledge was assessed using structured pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The results revealed a notable increase in participants’ understanding, with average scores rising from 55.2 (pre-test) to 88.1 (post-test), indicating a 59.6% improvement. The highest gain (80%) was observed in understanding standard procedures of aromatherapy application. These findings demonstrate that interactive, participatory education combined with supportive media such as leaflets and instructional videos is highly effective in enhancing knowledge. This program is expected to support pregnant women in preparing for childbirth with greater confidence, reduced anxiety, and improved coping mechanisms through natural pain management techniques.

Abstract

Background: Long-term management is required for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), a chronic disease, to prevent complications and improve patients' quality of life. Insufficient knowledge regarding diabetes management may hinder patients from performing effective self-care. One strategy that can be implemented is Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME), a structured educational approach designed to enhance patients’ knowledge and skills in managing their condition. Methods: This community service activity involved 33 individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Perbarakan Village. The DSME-based educational program covered fundamental concepts of diabetes, dietary management, physical activity, medication adherence, blood glucose monitoring, complication prevention, and diabetes problem-solving. Participants’ knowledge was assessed before and after the educational intervention using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. Results: The majority of participants were male (51.5%), had a junior high school education (36.4%), worked as entrepreneurs (33.3%), had comorbid conditions (60.6%), and had been diagnosed with diabetes for 1–3 years (57.6%). Before the intervention, most participants demonstrated poor (48.5%), moderate (33.3%), and good (18.2%) levels of knowledge. Following the educational intervention, the proportion of participants with good knowledge increased to 51.5%, while those with moderate knowledge accounted for 39.4%, and the proportion with poor knowledge decreased to 9.1%. Conclusion: Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) effectively improved participants’ knowledge regarding Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus management. These findings suggest that self-management-based health education can help communities better understand how to manage diabetes independently and prevent diabetes-related complications.

Abstract

Wasting is an acute nutritional problem among children under five that remains a public health challenge in Pringsewu Regency, with a prevalence reaching 11.1%. One of the primary risk factors for this condition is the low knowledge of mothers regarding the principles of balanced nutrition and variations in processing local food. This community service activity (PkM) aims to improve the knowledge of mothers with children under five regarding balanced nutrition through education based on the "PARDASUKA" local recipe book. The method used was direct nutritional education with a pre-test and post-test design involving 32 mothers, accompanied by interactive discussions and the distribution of posters and recipe books. The results showed a significant increase in the participants' knowledge. Before the education, the majority of mothers had poor knowledge at 62.5% (20 people), the good category was 25.0% (8 people), and the excellent category was only 12.5% (4 people). After the intervention, the proportion of poor knowledge decreased drastically to 12.5% (4 people), the good category became 9.37% (3 people), while the excellent category surged sharply to 78.12% (25 people). Overall, there was a recorded increase in knowledge of 65.62%. In conclusion, nutritional education intervention using practical media such as local food-based recipe books is proven effective in significantly increasing mothers' understanding, thereby holding great potential to support sustainable efforts in preventing and reducing wasting rates.

Abstract

Nutrition issues in Indonesia remain a focus of government attention that requires serious handling from various sectors. Food security needs to be improved, one of which is through the cultivation of local crops that utilize yard space as an effort to prevent stunting. The objective of this Community Service activity was to provide information and education to mothers who are members of the Posyandu Balita (Child Health Center) in Dukun Village, Magelang Regency, on cultivating local crops as a means of reducing stunting in children. The community service method consisted of two sessions, namely providing educational material on cultivating local crops and practical training on cultivating local crops to support child nutrition. There were 21 participants in this activity, namely mothers who are cadres of the Toddler Health Center in Dukun Village, Magelang Regency, which was held in Dukun Village. The activity consisted of a pre-test, material delivery, followed by a question and answer session and practical training on local plant cultivation, and ended with a post-test and satisfaction survey. Based on the observations made, the participants were very enthusiastic, and the average post-test score increased compared to the pre-test score, from 94.28 to 98.09. This indicates that the participants understood the material on how to cultivate local plants well. The satisfaction survey results showed that 80% of the participants stated that they were very satisfied with the benefits of this community service program. Socialization and education activities such as this need to be continuously improved to increase the community's ability to cultivate local crops, which can be one of the efforts to prevent stunting.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major health problem among the elderly, with an increasing prevalence and a high risk of cardiovascular complications, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. This condition requires sustainable and comprehensive management. In addition to pharmacological therapy, non-pharmacological approaches are essential in hypertension control, particularly through health education and the use of easily accessible natural resources. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a potential natural ingredient that may support blood pressure control due to its potassium content, high water composition, and antioxidant properties that contribute to electrolyte balance and blood pressure regulation. This community service activity aimed to improve elderly individuals’ knowledge and understanding of hypertension and the benefits of cucumber juice as a supportive non-pharmacological strategy for blood pressure control. The program was implemented through health education sessions, interactive discussions, and practical demonstrations of simple and applicable cucumber juice preparation. The participants were elderly individuals with hypertension living in the community. Evaluation was conducted by assessing participants’ engagement, comprehension of the material, and changes in attitudes before and after the educational intervention. The results demonstrated the success of the program, as evidenced by an increase in participants with good knowledge from 0% before the intervention to 91.1% after the intervention. In addition, 88.9% of participants expressed willingness to regularly consume cucumber juice as part of their daily hypertension management. In conclusion, non-pharmacological education on the utilization of cucumber juice is effective as a promotive and preventive approach to support blood pressure control among the elderly in the community.

Abstract

The ability to speak English is an important skill that needs to be developed from primary school onwards as preparation for global communication in the future. However, in reality, primary school students still face various obstacles in using English orally, such as limited vocabulary, inaccurate pronunciation, and low confidence in speaking. This community service activity aims to encourage students to be more active and confident in speaking English through the implementation of a Daily English Programme in primary schools. The method of implementation includes several stages, namely socialising the programme to the school, training and mentoring teachers in implementing English language habits, implementing the use of English in daily activities at school, and evaluating the activity through pre-tests and post-tests. The subjects of this community service activity were 28 primary school students. The results of the activity showed a significant improvement in the students' English speaking skills, as indicated by an increase in the average score from 47.6 on the pre-test to 73.5 on the post-test. In addition to the improvement in test results, the students also showed positive developments in terms of their courage to speak, active participation in activities, and confidence in using English. Thus, the Daily English Programme is considered effective as an effort to create a communicative learning environment and support the continuous improvement of elementary school students' English speaking skills.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to impaired insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The increasing prevalence of DM requires community-based promotive and preventive efforts, including the use of natural ingredients as supporting traditional treatments. Sapodilla fruit (Manilkara zapota) is known to contain dietary fiber, polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant compounds that have the potential to help control blood sugar levels. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and understanding of DM sufferers regarding the introduction and use of sapodilla fruit juice as a complementary traditional therapy. The methods used included outreach, health education, cooking sapodilla fruit juice, and interactive discussions. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge levels. The "good" knowledge category increased from 16.7% before the activity to 73.3% after the activity. In addition, participants showed a positive attitude towards the use of sapodilla fruit juice as a safe complementary therapy without replacing primary medical treatment. This activity is expected to become an alternative, applicable and sustainable health education to support the healing of Diabetes Mellitus in the community.

Abstract

A health laboratory is a healthcare facility that conducts examinations, analyses, and tests on human biological samples or non-biological materials to help identify diseases, determine the causes of health disorders, assess the health conditions of individuals or communities, and detect factors that can affect health status. Screening for sexually transmitted infections is a health check carried out to detect the presence of sexually transmitted infections in someone, even before symptoms appear, so that treatment can be done earlier to prevent complications and further transmission. For pregnant women, screening for sexually transmitted infections plays an important role in maintaining the health of both mother and baby and supporting efforts to reduce maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. The goal of this community service is to understand the relationship of health laboratory management in supporting sexual transmitted disease screening programs at pregnant women at Aek Natolu Health Center. The community service activity was carried out using a participatory approach based on health checks and education. Education was provided on the importance of laboratory tests during pregnancy, the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and the importance of compliance with routine antenatal check-ups. This activity involved 25 participants, consisting of all pregnant women at Aek Natolu Health Center. The results of the examination showed that out of 25 respondents, 23 respondents (92%) did not have sexually transmitted infections, while 2 respondents (8%) had sexually transmitted infections. The results of this activity show that health laboratory management plays an important role in supporting early detection of sexually transmitted infections in pregnant women, which can serve as a basis for providing education, follow-up, and preventive efforts to improve the quality of maternal and child health services

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing public health problem, with many patients eventually requiring hemodialysis therapy. Dietary management is an essential component of hemodialysis care, as it helps maintain fluid balance, nutritional status, and prevent disease-related complications. This community service activity was conducted in commemoration of World Kidney Day on March 12, 2026, at the Hemodialysis Unit of Grandmed Hospital Lubuk Pakam and involved 50 patients undergoing routine hemodialysis. The program consisted of health education delivered through interactive lectures, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions covering renal diet principles, fluid intake management, and restrictions on sodium, potassium, and phosphorus intake. Participants’ knowledge was evaluated using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. Most participants were male (52%), aged 30–59 years (64%), had completed senior high school or higher education (74%), and had been receiving hemodialysis for more than 18 months (58%). The evaluation results showed an increase in the proportion of participants with a good level of knowledge from 86% before the educational intervention to 98% afterward. However, misconceptions regarding fluid restriction and the consumption of high-phosphorus foods were still identified among some participants. These findings indicate that health education contributes to improving patients’ knowledge of renal dietary management and should be implemented continuously to support disease management and enhance the quality of life of patients undergoing hemodialysis.
