Abstract

This study aims to examine the transformation of communication practices among Communication Studies students as they transition from academic communication patterns to professional communication during their participation in a certified internship program. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving [number] students enrolled in the certified internship program. The findings were further validated through source triangulation involving academic supervisors and workplace mentors. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis through the stages of transcription, coding, categorization, theme identification, and interpretation. The findings reveal that students’ communication transformation unfolds through four interrelated stages: encountering the demands of professional communication, adaptation, habituation, and the internalization of workplace communication standards. This transformation is characterized by a shift from academic communication, which tends to be more elaborative and task-oriented, toward communication that is more concise, responsive, context-sensitive, and oriented toward effective task completion. These changes are evident in students’ ability to comprehend and clarify instructions, articulate ideas, produce professional written communication, interact effectively with mentors and colleagues, and adapt their messages to diverse organizational contexts. The findings demonstrate that certified internship programs serve not merely as platforms for applying academic competencies but also as transitional environments in which professional communication competencies are developed and students’ preparedness for entering the workplace is strengthened.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between WhatsApp Group usage patterns and academic discussion participation among Islamic Communication and Broadcasting students at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara. A quantitative correlational design was employed involving 122 fourth-semester students from five classes. Data were collected using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire measuring WhatsApp Group usage patterns, including frequency, duration, and group involvement, as well as students’ participation in academic discussions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression. The results showed that WhatsApp Group usage and students’ discussion participation were generally at moderate to high levels. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a positive and statistically significant relationship between WhatsApp Group usage patterns and discussion participation (r = 0.612, p < 0.001). The regression model indicated that WhatsApp Group usage patterns statistically accounted for 37.5% of the variance in discussion participation, reflecting a predictive association rather than a causal relationship. Students demonstrated greater participation in responding to questions and providing feedback than in initiating discussions and developing arguments. These findings suggest that WhatsApp Group usage patterns are positively associated with students’ academic discussion participation and may provide a basis for further investigation into how structured online discussion practices can facilitate student engagement in higher education.

Abstract

Islamic broadcasting is widely used to disseminate religious knowledge, yet the relative contribution of message quality and communicator competence remains unclear. This study examines their effects on the religious knowledge of Islamic Communication and Broadcasting students at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara. A quantitative survey was conducted with 26 respondents selected through accidental sampling. Data were collected using an online Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed through multiple linear regression using IBM SPSS. All questionnaire items met the validity and reliability requirements. The results show that communicator competence has a positive and significant effect on students’ religious knowledge (t = 5.387, p < .001), whereas broadcast-message quality has no significant partial effect (t = 0.217, p = .830). Thus, improving communicators’ credibility, subject-matter mastery, and delivery skills is more crucial than relying solely on message packaging to strengthen students’ religious knowledge.

Abstract

Instagram has become an important medium for students’ self-expression and social interaction, yet its relationship with self-confidence in interpersonal communication remains an important area of investigation. This study examines the relationship between Instagram use intensity and students’ self-confidence in interpersonal communication. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted among 48 active students from the Communication Studies Program at Universitas Sumatera Utara, cohorts 2022–2024, selected through purposive sampling. Eligible respondents had used Instagram for at least one year and reported an average use of at least three hours per day. Data were collected using a validated and reliable Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using simple linear regression with SPSS version 26. The results showed a positive and statistically significant relationship between Instagram use intensity and students’ self-confidence in interpersonal communication (F = 74.316, p < 0.001). The model explained 61.2% of the variance in self-confidence (R² = 0.612). These findings indicate that higher Instagram use intensity is statistically associated with higher self-confidence in interpersonal communication among the students included in this study. However, given the cross-sectional design, the findings should be interpreted as an association rather than evidence of a causal relationship.

Abstract

Social media has reshaped how university students establish relationships and communicate. This study examines the association between the intensity of social media use and the quality of students’ interpersonal communication. A cross-sectional quantitative survey was conducted among 120 Communication Studies students selected through proportional stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using multiple linear regression with SPSS version 26. Social media use intensity was measured through frequency of use, duration of use, and the type of content consumed, particularly content related to social interaction, information exchange, and entertainment. The results indicate that frequency of use, duration of use, and content type were positively and significantly associated with interpersonal communication quality. Frequency showed the strongest statistical association (β = 0.38, p < 0.001), followed by duration (β = 0.25, p = 0.006) and content type (β = 0.19, p = 0.019). The overall regression model was statistically significant (F = 18.34, p < 0.001) and explained 41.2% of the variance in interpersonal communication quality (R² = 0.412). These findings suggest that patterns of social media use are significantly associated with interpersonal communication quality among university students. Further longitudinal or experimental research is needed to examine the direction and potential causal mechanisms underlying these relationships.
