Abstract

This study aims to identify the cognitive load experienced by tenth-grade students on the topic of logarithms, considering their cognitive styles, namely field dependent (FD) and field independent (FI). The research adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The participants of this study consist of 38 tenth-grade students from a high school in Malang, grouped based on their cognitive styles: FD and FI. Data were collected through a cognitive style questionnaire (HFT Test), logarithmic tests, and in-depth interviews. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students with a field dependent cognitive style tend to experience high intrinsic cognitive load, particularly due to confusion in understanding the numerous concepts that need to be applied. In contrast, students with a field independent cognitive style experience extrinsic and germane cognitive loads, reflected in their difficulties in applying already-learned concepts. This study highlights the significant role of cognitive styles in influencing students' cognitive load when solving mathematical problems. Strengthening prerequisite knowledge and providing additional practice are recommended to reduce cognitive load, especially for students with a field dependent cognitive style.

Abstract

This study aims to identify learning obstacles and the necessary learning strategies for mastering Pythagoras and algebra concepts among high school students. Through analysis of students' responses, it was found that primary obstacles include epistemological, ontogenetic, and didactic aspects, which affect students' ability to understand fundamental concepts, and visual representations, and develop logical and meaningful problem-solving steps. The results indicate that students can visualize problems and apply formulas procedurally; however, they face difficulties in devising comprehensive strategies and understanding symbolic relationships deeply. The discussion emphasizes the importance of strengthening conceptual understanding, critical thinking practice, and the use of scaffolding and varied representations in the learning process. The conclusion highlights the need to emphasize the need to reinforce fundamental concepts and visual representations to improve students’ interpretative and reflective skills. Recommendations include integrating digital manipulatives, gradual symbolic manipulation exercises, and developing more explicit and contextual teaching methods to support a comprehensive understanding of concepts and problem-solving strategies in mathematics.

Abstract

This research aims to develop mathematics learning tools based on Pancasila values to support students' character building and mathematical competence improvement. The main problem raised is the lack of integration between mathematics learning and character education, especially the noble values of Pancasila. The method used in this research is Research and Development (R&D) with a development model that refers to the simplified Borg and Gall steps. The tools developed include Learning Implementation Plan (RPP), Learner Worksheet (LKPD), and assessment instruments. Pancasila values are integrated into learning activities through contextual, collaborative, and problem-based approaches. The results of the expert validation test showed that the tools developed were in the very valid category, while the results of the limited trial showed that the tools were able to increase student involvement and foster positive attitudes such as responsibility, cooperation, and justice. Thus, this Pancasila-based mathematics learning tool is considered feasible to be used and further developed in the context of character education in schools.
