Abstract

This paper examines the contextualization of kitab kuning (classical Islamic texts) and the transformative research tradition that has evolved within Indonesian pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). The long historical journey of pesantren in the Indonesian archipelago has produced profound social transformations and significantly influenced the religious life of Muslim communities. According to Bruinessen, pesantren have successfully established a great tradition in Islamic education rooted in the study of classical texts, commonly referred to as kitab kuning. As institutions that nurture both intellectual heritage and research culture, pesantren hold substantial potential in addressing contemporary and future societal challenges. The research paradigm within pesantren possesses unique characteristics that distinguish it from conventional research approaches. These distinctions arise from divergent ontological, epistemological, methodological, and axiological constructions, which are deeply grounded in the social history, core values, and intellectual traditions of the pesantren itself.

Abstract

Religious tolerance has long been a subject of interest among social scientists, particularly through Max Weber’s concept of social action, which is relevant for understanding religious diversity in everyday life. This study aims to examine Max Weber’s theory of social action and relate it to the practice of religious tolerance in a business setting, specifically at the Razzaq refill drinking water depot. The study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings indicate that religious tolerance can be understood through four types of social action: traditional action, affective action, instrumental rationality, and value rationality. The application of these four types of social action is reflected in the interactions between consumers and employees, leading to increased understanding, positive feedback, and the creation of a sense of comfort and tranquility for employees in carrying out their religious rituals as part of their daily activities.

Abstract

This study develops the Ta'aruf-Taqwa Operational Model as a prescriptive-operational framework to strengthen social moderation (wasathiyyah) in Indonesia. This model is based on the interpretation of QS. Al-Hujurat: 13 in Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab and the context of Indonesia's diversity, which is prone to conflicts based on ethnicity, religion, race, and intergroup relations (SARA). This verse emphasizes human equality and interprets diversity as the basis for mutual understanding (li-ta'arrafu). Quraish Shihab emphasizes that Ta'aruf requires active recognition, flexibility, and compassion as a form of moderation. Meanwhile, Taqwa is the only measure of nobility, as well as a rejection of identity discrimination. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of Ta'aruf as a mechanism of horizontal interaction that encourages social flexibility and Taqwa as a framework of vertical regulation that maintains justice. This model transforms moderation from an ethical concept into concrete practice, with implications for the reform of the Islamic curriculum and the strengthening of the role of scholars in responding to social conflicts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the roles of Bunyai and Nawaning in promoting the development of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in the contemporary era. Pesantren leadership has traditionally been understood in masculine terms, positioning the Kyai as the central authority, which has often led to the marginalization of women’s contributions. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method conducted in several pesantren in East Lampung. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that Bunyai play a significant role as primary managers of dormitory life, female student curricula, and the strengthening of pesantren economic independence. Meanwhile, Nawaning contribute through managerial innovation, the digitalization of pesantren systems, and the dissemination of Islamic values via digital media. The synergy between Bunyai and Nawaning forms a collaborative leadership model that integrates pesantren traditions with the demands of modernity. This study emphasizes that recognition of women’s roles is a crucial factor for the sustainability and competitiveness of pesantren in the future.
