Abstract

Purpose - The rapid growth of digital technology and social media has significantly impacted how religious knowledge is accessed, interpreted, and practised among Muslim youth. Concurrently, this shift has contributed to the decentralisation of religious authority in Indonesia, raising concerns about the authenticity, consistency, and integrity of Islamic creed (ʿaqīdah) within largely unregulated digital environments. Although existing literature has predominantly examined these developments through sociological and media perspectives, limited attention has been given to their implications within Islamic legal and theological paradigms. This study aims to examine the role of digital platforms in the formation, negotiation, and maintenance of ʿaqīdah among Muslim youth, while also analysing these dynamics through the lens of Islamic jurisprudence.Methodology/approach - To achieve this, the research employs a qualitative method, combining a comprehensive literature review with thematic analysis, supported by selected case examples of Islamic digital preaching (daʿwah) movements in Indonesia. The analytical framework is grounded in key Islamic legal concepts, including verification (tabayyun), ethical responsibility (amānah), the authority of qualified scholars, and the overarching framework of the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah), particularly the preservation of religion (ḥifẓ al-dīn).Findings - The findings reveal that digital media has restructured Islamic discourse: it has made it more participatory and accessible; yet, it has also facilitated misinformation, fragmented knowledge, and contributed to the erosion of traditional authority structures. These dynamics present both opportunities and challenges. On the one hand, they enable broader access to religious education; on the other, they pose risks to the integrity of ʿaqīdah. The study concludes that digital religious interaction must be guided by an Islamic legal-ethical framework to safeguard doctrinal integrity. Conclusion - This research contributes a normative-analytical framework that bridges Islamic theology, sociology, and jurisprudence. It further recommends strengthening digital religious literacy, enhancing the presence of qualified scholars in online spaces, and establishing ethical standards for digital religious discourse.

Abstract

Purpose – The global climate crisis can no longer be understood merely as an ecological issue; rather, it is a structural manifestation of fossil capitalism that reproduces social inequality, environmental exploitation, and humanity's ontological alienation from nature. This article aims to analyse the climate crisis through the reciprocal relationship between Roy Bhaskar's concept of Meta-Reality and the ontology of Islamic law, whilst formulating an Islam-Metarealist framework as a transformative ecological paradigm.Methodology/approach - This research is a qualitative study grounded in a literature review, employing an approach informed by Islamic legal philosophy and critical realism. Data were collected through documentary research and a critical examination of the works of Roy Bhaskar, literature concerning climate justice and fossil capitalism, as well as studies on Islamic environmental jurisprudence (fiqh al-bī'ah), Islamic legal theory (uṣūl al-fiqh), and the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-syarī'ah) in relation to the environment. Analysis was conducted using philosophical hermeneutics, normative discourse analysis, and critical retroduction to elucidate the causal structure of the climate crisis.Findings - The results indicate that the climate crisis represents a manifestation of fossil capitalism's demi-reality, which normalises ecological exploitation through the logic of unlimited growth. In contrast, the principles of the oneness of God (tawḥīd), stewardship (khilāfah), and trustworthiness (amānah) offer an ontological foundation for equitable and sustainable climate governance. The Islam-Metarealist framework synthesises the causal-structural analysis of critical realism with the Islamic normative horizon to critique fossil capitalism on both ontological and moral grounds. Conclusion – This research highlights the necessity of reinforcing ecological juristic reasoning (ijtihād) within religious authorities, Islamic educational institutions, and the formulation of public policy. Furthermore, the climate crisis has been demonstrated to have significant social ramifications, including the exacerbation of socio-ecological inequality, the marginalisation of vulnerable groups, conflicts over resources, as well as the erosion of intergenerational justice and ethical disorientation in humanity's relationship with nature. Consequently, the energy transition must be perceived as a social justice agenda that prioritises not only emissions reduction but also the protection of vulnerable communities, the restoration of social cohesion, and the reconstruction of society's moral orientation. The response to the climate crisis should be directed towards institutional reforms that are more just, participatory, and intergenerationally responsible, whilst also restoring humanity's ontological connection with nature as part of a divine mandate.

Abstract

Purpose - Zakat serves an essential function in advancing socio-economic welfare and mitigating poverty in Indonesia. Nonetheless, the actual collection of zakat is considerably below its estimated potential. The efficiency of zakat management is frequently hindered by structural challenges, particularly those pertaining to transparency, accountability, and the comparatively low level of public trust in zakat management institutions. This study aims to address these challenges by delineating and formulating a conceptual framework for the integration of blockchain technology into a sharia-compliant zakat operational system that is also congruent with Indonesia's financial regulations.Methodology/approach - To achieve this objective, the research adopts a qualitative approach within an interpretive paradigm. Data are collected through a systematic literature review of academic publications, government regulatory documents, and classical and contemporary Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) literature. The collected data are then analysed using thematic analysis in order to construct a comprehensive governance model architecture.Findings – The findings propose an operational model comprising four integrated schemes: collection, allocation, reporting, and governance. Within this model, blockchain functions exclusively as a decentralised digital ledger for recording transaction trails, while the flow of funds continues to rely on fiat currency (Indonesian Rupiah). Additionally, smart contracts are implemented to automate allocation mechanisms with precision, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing the likelihood of human error. From the perspective of Islamic commercial jurisprudence (fiqh muʿāmalah), this framework inherently fulfils the principle of record-keeping (al-kitābah) to ensure justice. It also automates the execution of agency contracts (wakālah) and serves as a preventive measure blocking the means (sadd al-dharīʿah) against the misappropriation of funds (ghulūw), without violating the prohibition of excessive uncertainty in contracts (gharâr). Overall, this study contributes to the Islamic fintech literature by offering a technology-based zakat governance model that strengthens accountability without replacing conventional banking infrastructure. Conclusion - Consequently, it is recommended that policymakers and zakat institutions adopt transparency mechanisms based on distributed ledger technology to mitigate operational risks, optimise fund collection, and sustainably restore public trust through appropriate and context-sensitive innovations.

Abstract

Purpose - Modern emergency response management systems are largely shaped by technocratic approaches that prioritise procedural compliance and risk control. However, these approaches often insufficiently integrate ethical and value-based considerations as foundations for decision-making, thereby creating a gap between technical effectiveness and moral responsibility in protecting human life. This study develops the Islamic Emergency Response Framework (IERF) as a value-based safety governance model by integrating the principles and objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah).Methodology/approach - This study adopted a qualitative conceptual approach based on systematic literature synthesis, bringing together maqāṣid al-sharīʿah theory, safety science, and risk governance. The analysis centered on the principle of protection of life (ḥifẓ al-nafs) as a normative foundation and translated it into operational mechanisms within contemporary emergency response systems. In doing so, the study established a systematic connection between Islamic normative principles and practical safety governance.Findings - The findings reveal that the IERF consists of four interrelated dimensions: normative values, ethical governance, safety management systems, and operational emergency response. The framework not only strengthens the technical capacity of safety systems but also reorients decision-making processes towards ethical responsibility and the protection of life (ḥifẓ al-nafs).Conclusion - The study concludes that integrating maqāṣid al-sharīʿah into emergency response management transforms it from a predominantly procedural system into a value-based governance framework. Its primary contribution lies in proposing a conceptual model that bridges the epistemological gap between Islamic legal theory and contemporary safety practices. The study also offers scholarly implications for developing more human-centred, accountable, and sustainable emergency response systems across diverse organisational contexts.
