Abstract

This study is a qualitative research implementing sociolinguistics approach which aims to gain deeper insights on swearing words exploited in Deadpool 2 movie by the main character of the film. Focusing on the analysis of types and functions of swearing words, the data of this study were taken in the form of utterances produced by Wade Wilson or Deadpool as the main character of the film containing swearing words. Using a conceptual framework of swearing words and their function proposed by Anderson & Trudgill (1990) and classification theory of types of swearing words suggested by Battistellla (2005), the result of the analysis of this study finds out that the use of swearing words by a character in the film as directed by the director provides a unique way to understand the basic characteristic of the character. In the case of this study, Wade Wilson through the analysis of this research, despite having traumatic background and producing more swearing words than any other characters in the film, can be considered somewhat of a good person worthy of the titlle ‘superhero’.lin

The results of this research show the findings: (1) attitude takes roles in giving direct and indirect characterizations in the form of physical description, action, emotional and physical reaction, thought, speech, (2) In building the narrative text, affect takes roles to express the characters’ emotional feeling, judgement is used to describe and evaluate the characters’ behavior, and appreciation is used to describe the character’s physical appearance, the setting of place of the story and to give an abstract valuation.

Abstract

The concept of male gaze has been present for a very long time. It is present in literature, albeit literature being an entirely different media. In The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, this theme seems to be very apparent along with themes such as voyeurism and objectifications. Drawing on the structuralist and gender studies, this article emphasizes about the effect of the male gaze and how this specific way of viewing affects the girls in a way that it shifts their function as a character, by reading the novel as a fairytale—a form of literary work of which the elements are easy to understand—helped by Vladimir Propp’s theory of dramatis personae. The findings attained from literature reading and library research concludes that the way the neighborhood boys' view of the Lisbon girls does affect their roles in the story. I argue that the Lisbon girls were put on a very high pedestal since the very beginning; therefore positions them as the fairytale princess. However, due to the nature of the gaze applied in the work, there are possibilities that it may shift to other characters.

Abstract

This research examines a Hollywood movie entitled Arrival (2016) to see how American hegemony is represented and maintained in the movie. This is a qualitative research that is conducted under the framework of American studies. The concept of American values, Hegemony by Antonio Gramsci and Soft Power by Joseph Nye are used to answer the research questions. Semiotic film theory is employed to analyze the data in the form of dialogues and movie scenes. The results show the representation of American hegemony is seen in the characters that show American values, the U.S foreign policy, the U.S military supremacy, and the U.S economic field. Meanwhile, the maintenance of American hegemony is represented in American’s destiny to unify the world and also in hegemony through the language.
