Abstract

This study investigates the mathematical representation processes of junior high school students in Indonesia when solving higher-order thinking Skills (HOTS) problems, using machine learning-based analysis Given the increasing volume of mathematics education research (PER) literature, traditional thematic analysis methods are inadequate for tracking developments and identifying future research directions. To address this, we applied the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) algorithm, a natural language processing (NLP) technique, to automate thematic analysis of Indonesian PER literature. Our sample comprised six junior high school students, categorized by mathematical ability into high (2 students), medium (2 students), and low (2 students). Data preprocessing included tokenization, stop-word removal, and stemming to prepare the text corpus for LDA modeling. HOTS problems, which require critical thinking and problem-solving skills, were used to assess students' abilities. The findings highlight three primary aspects of mathematical representation: visual, symbolic, and verbal. High-ability students demonstrated a propensity for using and transforming visual representations innovatively, while medium-ability students predominantly employed symbolic representations. In contrast, low-ability students exhibited limited or no changes in their representations. These results underscore the varying approaches to mathematical problem-solving based on ability levels. This study illustrates the effectiveness of NLP methods in thematic analysis, presenting an automated, comprehensive approach to understanding thematic developments in students' mathematical representation processes. By identifying research gaps and suggesting future research directions, our findings can inform scholars and educators aiming to enhance the quality of mathematics education. However, the small sample size limits the generalizability of the results, and future research with larger samples is recommended to validate and expand upon these findings.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of educational marbles in increasing the understanding of science concepts in elementary school students in Germany. Using the quasi-experimental approach, 80 elementary school students in Germany are divided into two groups: control groups who use traditional methods and experimental groups that use educational marbles. The marbles used have been culturally adapted for the German context and are specifically designed to support learning science concepts. Increased understanding of science concepts is measured through initial tests and final tests and analyzed using inferential statistical analysis. The results showed that the experimental group experienced a significant increase in understanding the concept of science compared to the control group. For example, the average score of the final test of the experimental group increased from 65 to 85 (p <0.05), while the control group only increased from 64 to 70 (p> 0.05). This finding shows that the game of educational marbles can make learning more interactive and interesting, as well as increase understanding of science concepts in elementary school students. In addition, this research highlights the importance of adaptation of local culture in the development of teaching materials. The marble is used to integrate the elements of German culture, which helps students feel more connected with learning materials. However, this research also found that students with certain motor difficulties face greater challenges in using this game. For example, students with limitations in hand-eye coordination have difficulty controlling marbles, which affects their participation in learning activities. Overall, this research suggests the use of educational games in teaching science to create a more interactive and fun learning environment. The results of this study support further development of culturally adapted educational games to increase the effectiveness of learning in various contexts of education.

Abstract

The study investigates the role of Social Media Networks (SMN) as educational platforms at Mindanao State University, Marawi City, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to answer three key questions: the common SNM used by students in online classes, their perceptions of SNM, and the effects of integrating SNM based on the Triple E framework (Engagement, Enhancement, Extension of learning objectives). A quantitative descriptive design with a validated survey questionnaire was employed, involving 104 students from the first semester of the 2021-2022 Academic Year. Data analysis included frequencies, percentages, weighted averages, and correlation tests. Results showed that Google, Messenger, and Facebook were the most frequently used SNM. About 85% of respondents had basic SNM knowledge, facilitating their adaptation to online learning. According to the Triple E framework, 78% demonstrated high engagement, 82% reported enhanced learning objectives, and 75% experienced expanded understanding through SNM. The study underscores the significance of integrating SNM into online learning. Recommendations include structured training on SNM usage, enhancing student-lecturer communication via SNM, limiting gadget use to combat digital fatigue (reported by 60% of students), innovating online learning methods, and optimizing SNM use by lecturers and staff for better material accessibility.
