Abstract

Background: The elimination of illiteracy represents a key objective of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, essential for fostering quality education and lifelong learning opportunities. Previous research indicated that illiteracy posed severe negative consequences for community well-being and societal progress. This study aimed to investigate the precise quantitative relationship between the provincial illiteracy rate and the Human Development Index (HDI) across Indonesia, thereby emphasizing the critical importance of achieving SDG 4. Methods: Researchers employed a quantitative descriptive design with a correlational approach. The study utilized 2024 cross-sectional data on the illiteracy percentage and HDI for all 38 Indonesian provinces, which was obtained from the Statistics Indonesia/Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS). Following a test for normality, the non-parametric Spearman Rank correlation test was selected for the analysis, supplemented by visual examination via a scatter plot. Findings: The analysis revealed a strong, statistically significant inverse relationship between the provincial illiteracy rate and the HDI in Indonesia. The 2024 HDI data, spanning an interval of 1-100, showed an average of 73.5, with the maximum score (84.15) achieved by Special Capital Region of Jakarta and the minimum score (54.43) recorded by Highland Papua Province. Correspondingly, the illiteracy rates averaged 3.7%, with Highland Papua Province displaying the highest rate (29.63%) and Central Sulawesi province the lowest (0.25%). This inverse correlation confirmed the theory that low human capital, as measured by illiteracy, directly restricts developmental outcomes. Conclusion: The principal conclusion was that the eradication of illiteracy is crucial for significantly raising the HDI, directly supporting the successful realization of SDG 4, and enhancing overall public welfare. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research provided the most current (2024) and comprehensive correlation analysis using data from all 38 provinces in Indonesia, establishing a renewed empirical foundation that underscores the urgency of the SDG 4 target for regional development.

Abstract

Background: The rapid advancement of digitalization has transformed the landscape of international diplomacy from institution-centered practices into more inclusive engagements involving non-state actors, particularly global influencers. This study examines the visit of Darren Watkins Jr., widely known as IShowSpeed, to Indonesia in 2024 as a form of soft power and digital diplomacy with the potential to enhance Indonesia’s global image. Methods​: Employing a qualitative case study approach through literature review, media analysis, and online audience responses, the research demonstrates that IShowSpeed’s spontaneous interactions with local culture including batik, cuisine, music, and traditional performances generated significant positive exposure for Indonesia worldwide. Findings: The impact of IshowSpeed's Indonesian tour is reflected in increased online tourism searches, predominantly positive public sentiment, and a growing perception of Indonesia as a hospitable and open nation. Nevertheless, challenges remain, such as risks of cultural misinterpretation, negative virality, and public safety issues. Conclusion: The findings highlight the need for adaptive, collaborative, and data-driven strategies in digital diplomacy to fully harness similar opportunities in the future. Consequently, IShowSpeed serves as a concrete example of how individuals can act as digital cultural diplomats supporting Indonesia’s soft power strategy. Novelty/Originality of this article: The originality of this study lies in its attempt to deconstruct the concept of digital diplomacy by positioning global live-stream content creators as central actors in contemporary soft power strategies.Thank you for your cooperation, and we look forward to your response.

Abstract

Background: The onslaught of plastic pollution is largely driven by consumer activities that have widespread environmental and ecological impacts. This study examines the scientific literature on consumer intention related to reducing single-use plastic, a pivotal factor of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, specifically the goal of responsible production and consumption. Methods: The data used in this analysis were identified through a search of the Scopus database using keywords such as reduce* and plastic* and behavior* and intention*, covering 49 publications in English over the last ten years (from 2015 to 2025). Five primary themes emerged using NVivo and VOSviewer for thematic analysis, highlighting the multifaceted nature of consumer intention. Findings: Bibliometric analysis identified four clusters: behavior change and plastic consumption, the actor of reducing and managing single-use plastic, policy intervention and decision-making, and human drivers and plastic pollution. Each cluster was expanded into a series of meaningful codes through NVivo-assisted thematic analysis. Conclusion: The success of any effort in reducing single-use plastic inevitably relies on how the problem is defined and perceived. In this sense, we also conclude several factors that contribute to reducing single-use plastic: the source of single-use plastic usage, single-use plastic behavior, the type of single-use plastic, production, and management. Novelty/Originality of this article: This comprehensive and cross-contextual study examines consumer intentions toward reducing single-use plastic use. Unlike previous reviews that focus on individual sectors, this study systematically integrates evidence from households, restaurants, cafés, and corporate settings. This approach enables the identification of overarching behavioral patterns, context-specific drivers, and underexplored research areas, contributing to a comprehensive theoretical and practical understanding of single-use plastic reduction. Furthermore, this study has outlined three promising future research directions that aim to enhance the quantity and quality of this study.

Abstract

Background: Coastal cities across the Global South are experiencing rapid spatial transformation driven by urbanization, port expansion, and land reclamation. This study examines four decades (1988–2025) of coastal spatial transformation and identifies the critical period in which development trajectories changed structurally. Methods: A quantitative-spatial approach integrating multitemporal remote sensing and non-parametric time-series analysis was employed. Built-up areas were extracted from Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+, and Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS imagery for 1988, 2000, 2015, and 2025 using the Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) with adaptive thresholding. Structural changes in the time series were detected using Pettitt’s change-point test implemented in the pyhomogeneity module. Findings: Built-up land expanded from 26.43 ha in 1988 to 86.11 ha in 2025, representing a cumulative increase of 225.8%. Three phases of transformation were identified: organic settlement expansion (1988–2000), infrastructure-driven acceleration (2000–2015), and consolidation through densification and small-scale reclamation (2015–2025). The Pettitt test identified a statistically significant change point in 2015 (p ≈ 0.000), after which mean built-up extent increased by 71.1%. Coastal spatial transformation is non-linear and shaped by the interaction of urbanization pressures, infrastructure development, reclamation, and planning policies. Conclusion: The findings highlight the need for socio-ecological safeguards in coastal planning to support Sustainable Development Goal 11 and balance urban growth with the protection of vulnerable coastal communities and ecosystems. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides the first statistically dated reconstruction of four-decade coastal spatial transformation by integrating multitemporal NDBI analysis with Pettitt change-point detection, offering a reproducible and low-resource framework for long-term coastal monitoring in data-scarce regions of the Global South.
