Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of awareness regarding dental health and proper toothbrushing techniques among students, leading to high plaque indices. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of vertical, horizontal, and combined toothbrushing techniques in reducing plaque indices among students residing in Dormitory 2 at Hasanuddin University. The study employed a pre-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach. The sample consisted of 73 students divided into three groups based on the brushing technique applied. Data were collected through plaque index measurements before and after the intervention using the Personal Hygiene Performance (PHP) method. The results indicate that all three toothbrushing techniques effectively reduce plaque indices, with the highest average reduction observed in the group using the combination technique. Before treatment, the average score was 2.5, categorized as moderate, which decreased to 0.8 (good category) after treatment. The vertical technique had an average score of 2.7 (moderate) before treatment, decreasing to 1.8 (moderate) afterward. The horizontal technique had an average score of 2.0 (moderate) before treatment, which decreased to 1.6 (good) after treatment.

Abstract

Dental caries remains a major oral health problem among children aged 6–10 years and is closely related to parental involvement in maintaining oral hygiene. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between parental role and the occurrence of dental caries in children aged 6–10 years at the Dental and Oral Hospital of Hasanuddin University, Makassar. This research employed a descriptive-analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted from July to August 2025. A total of 109 parent–child pairs who visited RSGMP Unhas and met the inclusion criteria were recruited using purposive sampling. Primary data were collected through interviews with parents using a structured questionnaire to assess parental roles, and direct clinical observation of children to determine dental caries status. Data were processed through editing, coding, entry, and cleaning stages. Descriptive analysis was performed to describe respondent characteristics, while the Chi-square test was used to examine the association between parental role and dental caries occurrence. The results showed that most parents had a good role in maintaining their children’s oral health (98.17%). All children examined (100%) were found to have dental caries. Statistical analysis using the Chi-square test demonstrated a significant relationship between parental role and the occurrence of dental caries, with p-value: 0.0001 (p<0.05). In conclusion, there was a significant association between parental role and dental caries in children aged 6–10 years at RSGMP Unhas Makassar. Strengthening parental involvement in oral health maintenance is essential to prevent and control dental caries in children.

Abstract

Tooth loss is a condition in which one or more teeth are detached from their sockets or places, usually caused by disease in the periodontal tissues. The WHO defines that at least elderly individuals should have at least 20 functioning teeth, which indicates that their chewing ability is close to normal, although it may be slightly reduced. This study aims to determine the knowledge of the elderly at RSGMP Hasanuddin University regarding tooth loss. The type of research used is descriptive research method with a survey research design. The sample in this study consists of all elderly individuals receiving treatment at RSGMP Hasanuddin University in the prosthodontics department from July 15, 2025, to August 2025, totaling 20 people. The sampling technique used is total sampling with a sample size of 20 respondents, and the data is analyzed using SPSS with bivariate analysis (cross-tabulation). Based on the research results at RSGMP Hasanuddin University, the majority of respondents are aged 65 years (30%), and most of them are female (85%), with the dominant profession being housewives (75%). The respondents' knowledge about tooth loss varies, with 45% having good knowledge, 40% having moderate knowledge, and 15% having poor knowledge, with females tending to be more knowledgeable than males. The phenomenon of tooth loss also increases with age, especially among housewives, who account for 75% of the total respondents experiencing tooth loss. These findings indicate the need for improved awareness and knowledge about dental health in the community.

Abstract

Knowledge is the result of a thought process that plays an important role in shaping attitudes and behaviors. Parental knowledge greatly influences efforts to maintain children’s oral and dental health. Children aged 6–12 years require special attention because this period involves the transition from primary to permanent teeth, including the eruption of the first permanent molar, which plays a crucial role in mastication and dental arch development. Lack of parental knowledge may lead to delayed problem detection and suboptimal dental care. This study aimed to determine the level of parental knowledge regarding children’s first permanent molar teeth and the sources of information that contribute to increasing this knowledge. This research was a quantitative descriptive study conducted at RSGMP Unhas Makassar City from July to August 2025. The study population consisted of 210 parents who had children aged 6–12 years visiting RSGMP Unhas Makassar City, with a sample of 136 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaires and documentation, then analyzed and presented in frequency distribution tables. The results showed that most parents had a high level of knowledge regarding the first permanent molar teeth. However, good knowledge was not always followed by optimal dental care behavior. Parental education and occupation were found to influence knowledge levels. In conclusion, parental knowledge regarding first permanent molar teeth at RSGMP Unhas Makassar City is relatively high but not consistently aligned with children’s dental care practices. Continuous education is needed to ensure that knowledge can be effectively implemented in daily dental care.

Abstract

Dental caries remains dominant oral health problem. The Decay, Missing and Filling Teeth (DMF-T) Index is used to measure cumulative caries experience. This study aims to analyze the relationship between extrinsic factors (education level, knowledge, motivation, and behavior) and the DMF-T Index. This type of research is analytical research with a cross-sectional design. The population in this study were all patients who visited the First Dental Clinic of the Ministry of Defense in Jakarta in October 2025. Data collection was carried out through an accidental sampling scheme with a sample size of 106 respondents calculated using the Lemeshow formula and anticipated dropout. The instruments used were questionnaires on factors of education level, knowledge, motivation, behavior, and the DMF-T index examination. Fisher's Exact Test was used for data analysis with a significance threshold of α=0.05. Referring to the caries level classification standard, the majority of subjects in this study were in the high DMF-T Index category, with percentage reaching 70.8% (75 respondents). A total of 84 respondents (79.2%) were at a higher education level, 86 respondents (81.1%) had good knowledge, 101 respondent (95.3%) had high motivation, and respondents who had moderate behavior were 59 respondents (55.7%). The results of statistical tests showed no relationship between the factors of Education Level, Knowledge and Motivation with the DMF-T index at the research location (p>0.05). However, the behavioral variable and the DMF-T index were related (p=0.032). According to this study, the only extrinsic factor that significantly influenced the DMF-T Index was the behavioral factor.

Abstract

Dental and oral health issues remain a major complaint among Indonesians. Lack of awareness and knowledge of the importance of dental and oral health leads to many Indonesians suffering from dental and oral diseases, both children and adults. Caries and periodontal disease are common oral health problems. Dental caries occurs due to the demineralization process resulting from bacterial interactions on the tooth surface. Bacteria are acidic, damaging tooth enamel, leading to dental caries. The primary cause of these diseases is plaque. Healthy teeth can be maintained by consuming fibrous fruits, as the nutrients and fiber contained in these fruits are very good for dental and oral health. Pineapple and star fruit are fruits that contain high levels of water and fiber. In addition, pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, and star fruit contains epicatechin, which can inhibit or kill caries-causing bacteria, especially Streptococcus mutans, which is commonly found in plaque. This study aims to determine the effect of chewing pineapple and star fruit on reducing plaque index. The type of research used is a literature review. The data collection method used was derived from secondary sources such as journals, books, scientific papers, theses, textbooks, and scientific articles. The research results showed that pineapple and starfruit can reduce plaque index and showed significant results. From the results of this literature review, it can be concluded that chewing pineapple and starfruit can reduce plaque index.

Abstract

Oral health problems remain a significant concern because inadequate oral hygiene maintenance behavior can trigger gingivitis, which negatively affects an individual’s quality of life. Continuous promotive and preventive efforts are required to establish consistent health behavior changes. This scientific paper aimed to describe the implementation of dental and oral health care for Mr. A (21 years old) with gingivitis through an integrated approach and the utilization of digital media via a WhatsApp Chatbot over a period of 63 days. The method applied was a dental and oral health care approach consisting of assessment, diagnosis based on eight basic human needs, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The interventions included scaling treatment, education using the Chair Side Talk (CST) method, and continuous monitoring and reinforcement of toothbrushing behavior twice daily using the Modified Bass, Stillman, Charter, and Roll Stroke techniques through a WhatsApp Chatbot. The results demonstrated a reduction in plaque score from 24% to 0% and a decrease in the gingival index from 0.29 (mild inflammation) to 0 (healthy), along with an increased sense of responsibility in maintaining independent oral hygiene. These findings indicate that the integration of clinical treatment and digital-based behavioral assistance improved patient adherence to plaque control consistently. The evaluation showed that the integration of clinical treatment and digital-based behavioral assistance over 63 days was effective in controlling gingivitis and establishing sustainable oral health maintenance habits.

Abstract

Gestation provokes a series of physiological modifications that elevate the susceptibility to oral pathologies, which, if neglected, may culminate in detrimental maternal repercussions such as preterm delivery and reduced birth weight.Despite these risks, awareness among pregnant women in primary healthcare settings remains low. This study aims to analyze the impact of infographic video-based education on the knowledge of oral health maintenance among pregnant women. This study utilized a quasi-experimental framework incorporating a one-group pretest-posttest methodology. A sample comprising 40 pregnant women from the Cibeunying Health Center was obtained through a total sampling strategy. Data acquisition was facilitated through the use of validated knowledge questionnaires, and subsequent analysis was conducted employing the Shapiro-Wilk normality test alongside the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in respondents' knowledge. Prior to the intervention, only 5% of participants achieved a "good" knowledge category; this figure rose sharply to 90% post-intervention. The mean knowledge score increased significantly from 58.75 ± 11.80 to 90.58 ± 10.00 (p < 0.001). In conclusion, infographic video-based counseling significantly enhances the knowledge of pregnant women regarding oral health. This medium is recommended as an innovative, practical, and effective educational tool for maternal oral health promotion in primary healthcare facilities.

Abstract

Oral health is an inseparable element of one’s overall physical well-being. In the Indonesian landscape, the prevalence of dental abscesses often stems from a disconnect between theoretical awareness and the practical application of daily oral hygiene. This investigation aimed to analyze the correlation between an individual's level of understanding regarding dental maintenance and the clinical incidence of dental abscesses. Adopting a cross-sectional analytical framework, this study recruited 33 participants via purposive sampling. Subject knowledge was evaluated through structured questionnaires, while clinical data were verified against patients’ medical records. Statistical validation was carried out using the Kendall-Tau test. Findings demonstrated that 51.5% of respondents held a moderate level of knowledge, while 72.7% presented with a history of dental abscesses. The analysis confirms a significant statistical association between these two variables (p = 0.022), leading to the conclusion that oral health maintenance is closely tied to one's knowledge base. To mitigate future oral health complications, it is recommended that healthcare providers implement consistent, long-term oral health promotion and preventive programs to foster public awareness and encourage proactive dental care.
