Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of awareness regarding dental health and proper toothbrushing techniques among students, leading to high plaque indices. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of vertical, horizontal, and combined toothbrushing techniques in reducing plaque indices among students residing in Dormitory 2 at Hasanuddin University. The study employed a pre-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach. The sample consisted of 73 students divided into three groups based on the brushing technique applied. Data were collected through plaque index measurements before and after the intervention using the Personal Hygiene Performance (PHP) method. The results indicate that all three toothbrushing techniques effectively reduce plaque indices, with the highest average reduction observed in the group using the combination technique. Before treatment, the average score was 2.5, categorized as moderate, which decreased to 0.8 (good category) after treatment. The vertical technique had an average score of 2.7 (moderate) before treatment, decreasing to 1.8 (moderate) afterward. The horizontal technique had an average score of 2.0 (moderate) before treatment, which decreased to 1.6 (good) after treatment.

Abstract

Dental caries remains a major oral health problem among children aged 6–10 years and is closely related to parental involvement in maintaining oral hygiene. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between parental role and the occurrence of dental caries in children aged 6–10 years at the Dental and Oral Hospital of Hasanuddin University, Makassar. This research employed a descriptive-analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted from July to August 2025. A total of 109 parent–child pairs who visited RSGMP Unhas and met the inclusion criteria were recruited using purposive sampling. Primary data were collected through interviews with parents using a structured questionnaire to assess parental roles, and direct clinical observation of children to determine dental caries status. Data were processed through editing, coding, entry, and cleaning stages. Descriptive analysis was performed to describe respondent characteristics, while the Chi-square test was used to examine the association between parental role and dental caries occurrence. The results showed that most parents had a good role in maintaining their children’s oral health (98.17%). All children examined (100%) were found to have dental caries. Statistical analysis using the Chi-square test demonstrated a significant relationship between parental role and the occurrence of dental caries, with p-value: 0.0001 (p<0.05). In conclusion, there was a significant association between parental role and dental caries in children aged 6–10 years at RSGMP Unhas Makassar. Strengthening parental involvement in oral health maintenance is essential to prevent and control dental caries in children.

Abstract

The background of this study is based on the high prevalence of dental and oral health problems in children, with 60-90% of school-aged children experiencing tooth decay. Additionally, the active role of parents is crucial in guiding children to maintain good oral health. The objective of this study was to identify the level of parental knowledge in improving the oral health of children aged 6-10 years at the Hasanuddin University Dental and Oral Health Education Hospital. This research method used a cross-sectional design with a sample of 93 parents of children aged 6-10 years undergoing treatment at RSGMP. The results of the study showed that respondents who obtained scores in the range of 26-40 contributed 54.3% of the total respondents, indicating that more than half of the respondents were classified as good. Respondents who scored between 0 and 15 numbered 10 individuals, representing 1.1%, while those who scored between 16 and 26 numbered 40 individuals, accounting for 45.2% of the total 93 respondents, falling into the moderate score category. The study concluded that fathers were more dominant than mothers in actively maintaining their children's dental health. Respondents who obtained a good category contributed 54.3%, respondents in the poor category numbered 10, representing 1.1%, and respondents in the moderate category numbered 40, accounting for 45.2% of the total 93 respondents, who were parents of children at the RSGMP of Hasanuddin University.

Abstract

Tooth loss is a condition in which one or more teeth are detached from their sockets or places, usually caused by disease in the periodontal tissues. The WHO defines that at least elderly individuals should have at least 20 functioning teeth, which indicates that their chewing ability is close to normal, although it may be slightly reduced. This study aims to determine the knowledge of the elderly at RSGMP Hasanuddin University regarding tooth loss. The type of research used is descriptive research method with a survey research design. The sample in this study consists of all elderly individuals receiving treatment at RSGMP Hasanuddin University in the prosthodontics department from July 15, 2025, to August 2025, totaling 20 people. The sampling technique used is total sampling with a sample size of 20 respondents, and the data is analyzed using SPSS with bivariate analysis (cross-tabulation). Based on the research results at RSGMP Hasanuddin University, the majority of respondents are aged 65 years (30%), and most of them are female (85%), with the dominant profession being housewives (75%). The respondents' knowledge about tooth loss varies, with 45% having good knowledge, 40% having moderate knowledge, and 15% having poor knowledge, with females tending to be more knowledgeable than males. The phenomenon of tooth loss also increases with age, especially among housewives, who account for 75% of the total respondents experiencing tooth loss. These findings indicate the need for improved awareness and knowledge about dental health in the community.

Abstract

Knowledge is the result of a thought process that plays an important role in shaping attitudes and behaviors. Parental knowledge greatly influences efforts to maintain children’s oral and dental health. Children aged 6–12 years require special attention because this period involves the transition from primary to permanent teeth, including the eruption of the first permanent molar, which plays a crucial role in mastication and dental arch development. Lack of parental knowledge may lead to delayed problem detection and suboptimal dental care. This study aimed to determine the level of parental knowledge regarding children’s first permanent molar teeth and the sources of information that contribute to increasing this knowledge. This research was a quantitative descriptive study conducted at RSGMP Unhas Makassar City from July to August 2025. The study population consisted of 210 parents who had children aged 6–12 years visiting RSGMP Unhas Makassar City, with a sample of 136 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaires and documentation, then analyzed and presented in frequency distribution tables. The results showed that most parents had a high level of knowledge regarding the first permanent molar teeth. However, good knowledge was not always followed by optimal dental care behavior. Parental education and occupation were found to influence knowledge levels. In conclusion, parental knowledge regarding first permanent molar teeth at RSGMP Unhas Makassar City is relatively high but not consistently aligned with children’s dental care practices. Continuous education is needed to ensure that knowledge can be effectively implemented in daily dental care.
