Abstract

Saliva is produced by the salivary glands in the oral cavity, with an average daily secretion of approximately 700 mL. The normal pH of saliva ranges from 6 to 7 and can be influenced by various stimuli, including taste. Binahong (Anredera cordifolia) is a medicinal plant that grows in both lowland and highland areas. Its leaves are commonly used in traditional medicine due to their content of bioactive compounds such as saponins, flavonoids, polyphenols, and triterpenoids. This study aimed to determine the effect of gargling with boiled binahong leaf solution on salivary pH among dental health students. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted involving 44 participants selected using simple random sampling. Salivary pH was measured before and after gargling with the binahong leaf decoction. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed a significant increase in salivary pH after gargling with the binahong leaf solution (p = 0.000; p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest measurements. In conclusion, gargling with boiled binahong leaves has a significant effect on increasing salivary pH and may serve as a non-pharmacological alternative to support oral health.

Abstract

Data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health indicate that the majority of the population brushes their teeth daily (94.7%). However, only 2.8% practice toothbrushing at the recommended times, namely after breakfast and before going to bed. The Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) also reports a high prevalence of dental caries among children, reaching 81.1% in those aged 3–4 years, 92.6% in children aged 5–9 years, and 73.4% among those aged 10–14 years. This study aimed to describe toothbrushing knowledge and its relationship with the occurrence of dental caries among scavenger children at the Makassar City landfill site. A descriptive study design was employed, involving a population of 75 scavenger children aged 6–12 years. Total sampling was applied, meaning all eligible children were included as respondents. Data were analyzed using SPSS through descriptive statistical analysis (univariate) and cross-tabulation (bivariate). The results showed that most respondents had a good level of toothbrushing knowledge (53.3%), while 25.3% had moderate knowledge and 21.3% had low knowledge. Furthermore, dental caries were found in the majority of children (94.7%), whereas only 5.3% were free from caries.

Abstract

Everyone desires to maintain good health, including adolescents. During adolescence, the consumption of foods high in sugar and simple carbohydrates tends to increase, which in turn increases the risk of plaque accumulation and dental and oral health problems. Promotive and preventive efforts through a healthy lifestyle, including fruit consumption, are needed to help reduce the plaque index, an indicator of dental health. The use of pineapple (Ananas comosus), which contains the enzyme bromelain and has natural cleansing properties, has the potential to play a role in maintaining dental and oral hygiene in adolescents. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pineapple on the plaque index. The study was categorized as an analytical survey with a quasi-experimental approach. This was conducted with a one-group following pre and post tests, namely a study by comparing the conditions before and after treatment. Thirty respondents with 12-17 years old were involved. Sampling was obtained through total sampling. The study was conducted in Wioi Village, Ratahan Timur District, Southeast Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi Province. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon test to determine the effect of pineapple consumption. The findings indicate that before treatment, the highest plaque index was in the Moderate category, with 19 people (63%). After treatment, there was a change in the majority of respondents with a Good category, with 25 people (83%). The Wilcoxon test demonstrated a statistically significant difference in the plaque index before and after pineapple consumption (p= 0.000). It concluded that pineapple consumption affects reducing the plaque index.

Abstract

Preoperative anxiety is a psychological condition that occurs prior to surgical procedures, particularly among individuals who have never undergone surgery. This condition is characterized by excessive fear and worry arising from the perception of a threat to personal safety. One approach that can be used to reduce preoperative anxiety is the use of educational video media. This study aimed to examine the effect of preoperative educational videos with general anesthesia on anxiety levels among patients at the Oral Surgery Clinic of Persahabatan General Hospital, Jakarta. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest two-group design was employed. The sample consisted of 40 participants, divided equally into an intervention group (n = 20) and a control group (n = 20), selected using purposive sampling. Anxiety levels were measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), and data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed that prior to the intervention, 55% of patients in the intervention group experienced moderate anxiety, while 50% of patients in the control group experienced severe anxiety. After receiving the educational video, 65% of patients in the intervention group demonstrated a reduction in anxiety to a mild level, whereas 40% of patients in the control group who received verbal education remained in the severe anxiety category. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in anxiety levels before and after the intervention (p-value = 0.000 < 0.05). These findings indicate that preoperative educational videos with general anesthesia are effective in reducing patient anxiety.

Abstract

Dental caries is a disease affecting the hard tissues of the teeth, including enamel, dentin, and cementum, caused by the activity of microorganisms that ferment carbohydrates. This process leads to demineralization of tooth structures and may progress to more severe damage if left untreated. Proper oral and dental health maintenance plays a crucial role in preventing dental caries, particularly among school-aged children. This study aimed to determine the relationship between oral health maintenance and dental caries status among children aged 6–12 years at the Department of Pedodontics, Dental and Oral Hospital of Hasanuddin University, Makassar. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach involving 70 children, selected using a total sampling technique. Data on oral health maintenance were collected using a structured questionnaire, while dental caries status was assessed through clinical examination. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods. Normality testing using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test indicated that the data were not normally distributed; therefore, Chi-Square and Wilcoxon tests were applied. The results showed that the majority of respondents had good oral health maintenance practices (57.14%); however, dental caries was found in all children examined. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between oral health care and dental caries status (p < 0.05), as well as a significant difference between oral health care and caries-related knowledge (p < 0.05). In conclusion, oral and dental health maintenance is significantly associated with dental caries status among children aged 6–12 years, although good maintenance practices alone were not sufficient to prevent the occurrence of dental caries.

Abstract

Dental caries is a dental health problem that generally occurs in children, one of which can be prevented through the use of fluoride. Parental knowledge is essential to form appropriate attitudes and actions in preventing caries in children, especially in terms of safe and effective use of fluoride. This study aimed to understand the relationship between parental knowledge about the use of fluoride and the prevention of dental caries in children aged 5-9 years at RSGMP Unhas. This study used an analytical design with a cross-sectional method. Sampling was carried out by accidental sampling technique on 60 parent respondents who had children aged 5-9 years at RSGMP Unhas. The instrument is in the form of a closed questionnaire that has been tested for validity using the Pearson Product correlation (r calculated > 0.361; p < 0.05) and was declared valid, and the reliability test with Cronbach's Alpha was 0.828 for the knowledge variable and 0.563 for the fluoride use variable. Data analysis was carried out by Chi-Square test at a significance level of 0.05. There was a significant relationship between parental knowledge level and fluoride use (p=0.000). The higher the knowledge, the more likely it is to apply the use of fluoride through toothpaste, mouthwash, or clinic apiation. Parental knowledge plays a crucial role in efforts to prevent dental caries in children. Therefore, it is important to improve structured education to encourage optimal use of fluoride.
