Celebes Journal of Language Studies (CJLS) ISSN (online): 2808-2079, (print): 2776-7493, is an open journal system founded by Har Press Indonesia, publisher under the auspices of YAYASAN STUDI PINISI MANDIRI (Decree of Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights: No. AHU-0010669.AH.01.04, 2019). Editorial Board includes experts of language studies from various universities. CJLS publishes twice per year. Issue 1 is scheduled in June and issue 2 is scheduled in December. Focus CJLS receives editable articles written in American English containing the results of language studies from any country. The length of articles ranges from 4000-8000 words covering Title, Introduction, Abstract, Related Literature Review, Research Method, Findings and Discussion, Conclusion and Recommendation, and References. Editable articles are the ones with less than 30% plagiarism risk excluding the References checked with plagramme.com. Scope CJLS publishes the results of quantitative and qualitative researches in the fields of descriptive linguistics, applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, semantics, and pragmatics.

Abstract

This research aimed to finding out (1) What are courteousness methodologies utilized by male in classroom interaction at SMK Nasional Makassar, (2) What are courteousness methodologies utilized by female instructors in classroom interaction at SMK Nasional Makassar, (3) What are the most dominant politeness techniques utilized by male and female instructors in classroom interaction at SMK Nasional Makassar. There are 4 English teachers including 2 male teachers and 2 female teachers at SMK Nasional who participated. This study using a qualitative descriptive method. Data research was collected through observation. Based on the results researcher found that politeness strategies used by male were thirty-four utterances used by male teachers from the total utterances were eighty-eight. The researcher found twenty-one utterances as bold on record, seven utterances as positive politeness, five utterances as off-record and one utterance as Say-Nothing. Moreover, politeness strategies utilized by teachers based on the results found that there were fifty-four utterances used by female teachers from the total utterances were eighty-eight. In addition, there were thirty-three utterances as bold on record. Five utterances as off-record. Seven utterances as positive politeness. Nine utterances as Say-Nothing strategy. The most dominant courteousness techniques utilized by male and female teachers in English classroom at SMK Nasional Makassar was bold on-record. It can conclude that the teachers have close relationship with his students.

Abstract

This research is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to find out the system used by parents in developing their children to become bilingual in English. There are 2 research questions in this study, namely parents’ system implementation in Makassar in developing their children to be bilingual and the factors that influence the system used by parents in developing their children to be bilingual. The subjects in this study were 5 parents who developed their children to be bilingual and 5 children who were developed to be bilingual by their parents aged 3-5 years. Research data were obtained through in-depth observation and interviews. Data analysis techniques, namely data condensation, data display, and drawing/checking conclusions. Based on data analysis, it was found that there is one system most often used by parents in Makassar, namely Mixed language. It is different with previous research which said that the most parent system used by parents is One Parent One Language (1P1L). It is different because the subjects in previous study are immigrants, while the subject in this research are not immigrants. Then, most of the subject work outside the house, so it is impossible for parents to share two languages. Then, there are 3 factors that influence the system used by parents in developing their children to become bilingual, namely age, media use, and community factors. Based on findings and discussion, it can be concluded that the five parents who were the subjects of this study chose to use the Mixed Language system in the development of bilingual children. Then, the factor that most influences the system used is the media usage factor, especially handphone.

Abstract

The study was experimental research. The thesis was intended to found out two research question. The first was the effectiveness of using YouTube-based instruction in teaching speaking English in an Indonesian Senior High School. The second was the interest of the students in the use of YouTube in learning speaking English. The population in this research was all of the students’ class XII Mipa 1 SMAN 14 Makassar as an experiment group that consist of 34 students. The data of this research was obtained by the result test and questionnaire on the subject for pretest and posttest. The data was analyzed by analysis of SPSS 2013. Based on analysis of statistic, the researcher found that YouTube-based instruction in teaching speaking English made students better understood in the material in learning in the classroom and increased all aspects of speaking English by score of t test was -22.277, standard deviation was 5.284, n-gain score was 56.12 categorized “effective enough” and 31 students got score more than KKM. The interest of the students in the use of YouTube in learning speaking English as a media at SMAN 14 Makassar with the mean score was 65.4 that categorized “very high”.

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to discover students' perceptions of the asynchronous online learning model at Institut Parahikma Indonesia. The researcher applied phenomenological design in this research. Data obtained from the semi-structured interviews regarding the student’s perceptions of the asynchronous online learning model at Institut Parahikma Indonesia There were seven respondents, three males and four females in the Institut Parahikma Indonesia. They were selected by convenience sampling. The results of this study revealed the students' perceptions of the asynchronous learning model. Trough the interview mentioned several facts that the asynchronous learning model is attractive in learning model because of flexible, and useful, leaving traces and discipline learning models.

Abstract

This research aims to find out students’ cultural awareness when learning English and the impact of cultural awareness on English language learning. The researcher conducted this research at the Universitas of Muhammadiyah Bone. The method of this research is descriptive-qualitative research. The research instruments employed were an interview and a questionnaire. The data were collected using a questionnaire with a Google Form and interview techniques. The research participants were English Department student at the sixth-semester of Universitas Muhammadiyah Bone. The results of this study indicated that the majority of EFL students have an awareness of their culture during the learning process and students also showed that their reactions to culture are related to cultural knowledge. In addition, students' responses indicated that cultural awareness is very important for developing positive attitudes towards people who have different cultural values, beliefs, and behaviors. The results also showed that the relationship between culture and linguistics is closely intertwined and influences each other, and the findings showed cultural awareness had positive impact to learning English on EFL students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bone.

Abstract

This research analyses how teachers use digital literacy and students' perception, especially using digital applications. The subjects were two English teachers who teach Junior High Schools in Maros Regency. They were taken by using deliberate or purposive sampling. Each teacher was from UPTD SMPN 28 Satu Atap Salenrang Maros and UPTD SMP 14 Tanralili Maros. The research instruments were an observation checklist and an interview. Based on data analysis, it gathered several results; first, the use of digital literacy, especially using digital applications in teaching English, is actualized in the main activity before and after the presentation of the lesson target and is also used as a final assessment of the lesson. Furthermore, the teachers have to make comprehension preparation for digital literacy, which leads to long time preparation. Second, the students in Maros Regency perceive that using digital applications is very important because it can help them learn and understand the material provided easily. They also perceive that using digital applications has positive and negative impacts. However, the students enjoy every learning process using digital applications. They involve themselves during the learning process and complete assignments on time. The findings also show some barriers perceived by the students. They indicate that barriers come from internal and external factors while using digital applications, including mobile phones' RAM capacity, inadequate internet networks, and a gradual understanding of digital applications.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the effectiveness of using Instagram as an English teaching medium. This type of research is experimental research. The design of this study is a pre-experimental design, which uses a one-group pretest-posttest design by only using the pretest and posttest as sources of data without a control group. Between the pretest and posttest, the researcher gave a treatment. The sample in this study was X2 class students, totaling 32 people. In collecting data, the researcher used pretest-posttest, questionnaire, and observation. The results of this research show that the use of Instagram as an English learning medium is effectively able to improve students' abilities in narrative text writing. This is based on the results of data analysis the mean value of students' pretest results is 53.72 and the standard deviation value is 5.572, while on the posttest, students' scores have increased, where the mean is 80.94 and the standard deviation value is 8.140. As for the paired T-test results obtained, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is less than 0.05 (p =.000).

Abstract

This research aimed at knowing the teacher implement Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) in teaching writing. The researcher applied qualitative research design. The instruments of the research were observation sheet and interview guide. The participants of the research were two teachers in second grade at SMP Telkom Makassar. The result showed that the implementation of cooperative integrated reading and composition in teaching writing is good and accordance with the actual procedure, the teacher prepare teaching materials that will be discussed in class, the material must be in accordance with the needs for implementing this strategy, because of the collaborative implementation of the CIRC strategy. CIRC can contribute to develop students' abilities to be more creative, independent, collaborative, communicative, and self-confident CIRC can also improve vocabulary mastery, familiarize students with conveying ideas by extending the topic, and build students' self-confidence in the area of writing skill. As a result, they can communicate improve writing skill.

Abstract

The object of this research to find out the implementation of reward strategy toward students’ motivation in narrative writing. The researcher used quantitative method and quasi-experimental design as the research methodology. The purpose of this study to investigate the effect of reward strategy toward students’ achievement and to know how the reward strategy can motivate the students in narrative writing. The population in this research was the students class X Mipa SMA N 10 Makassar that consist of 8 classes. Class X Mipa 1 as an experimental group and class X Mipa 3 as control group that consist of 36 students. The data of the research obtained by the result test of pre-test and post-test. The data is analyzed by the writing test and questionnaire. The students’ motivation in narrative writing focus on experimental group. The questionnaire consists of 20 statements. It had been showed with 85 % positive respond. Based on findings above. It can be concluded that the implementation of reward strategy has significant of students writing achievement and motivation.

Abstract

The study's aims were to determine the level of students’ vocabulary mastery, identify the students’ perceptual learning style preferences, and determine the impact of the perceptual learning style preferences on students’ vocabulary mastery. Mixed method research was used in this study. This study included 25 students from MA Muallimin Muhammadiyah Makassar's eleventh grade. The research data were collected using vocabulary test, perceptual learning styles preference questionnaire by Reid (1987), and interview. Likert scale, descriptive statistics, SPSS 26 version, and Microsoft Excel were used to analyze the data. The result of this research showed that (1) The students’ perceptual learning styles preferences was group learning style as a major classification. And the other learning style like visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile and individual were minor classification. (2) The impact of perceptual learning styles preferences on students' vocabulary mastery was that individual learners could focus on memorizing a new vocabulary; group learners could be enthusiastic and motivated to memorize English vocabulary; and auditory learners could help themselves memorize the vocabulary by listening repeatedly. (3) The level of the students’ vocabulary mastery was classified as fair. Based on findings and discussions, it can be concluded that the perceptual learning styles preferences affect the students’ vocabulary mastery. Students felt comfortable and it can help them to master vocabulary if they used their favor learning style.
