Abstract

The study examined the quandaries of the Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance (DAPQA) of the University for Development Studies. The study adopted a mixed research approach using purposive sampling to select two staff members from the Directorate and fourteen DAPQA representatives from all the various schools and faculties in the university. The researchers personally administered the questionnaires and conducted the interviews. Descriptive statistics and frequencies were employed to analyze the quantitative data, while the qualitative data were transcribed and coded for easy identification. The study revealed that the directorate is faced with poor cooperation from the university's academic and non-academic staff. It also came to light that there were inadequate personnel and limited office space and funds to carry out their activities. The study, therefore, recommends recruiting qualified staff and continuing workshops for existing staff of the university to appreciate the role of DAPQA and the need to avail themselves whenever needed. Again, university management should organize in-service training for the staff of DAPQA and provide enough office space and funds to carry out its activities.

Abstract

This research paper critically examines the portrayal of colonial confrontation in Chinua Achebe’s "Things Fall Apart," highlighting the themes of suppression and oppression. It argues that Achebe adeptly reconstructs the historical and political context of the Igbo people's recent past, illustrating their suppression and oppression by European colonizers. Furthermore, the paper explores how Achebe portrays Igbo community life and demonstrates how the arrival of white missionaries and colonial administrators gradually undermined traditional Igbo values. This erosion occurred initially through religious conversions and later through the imposition of colonial political structures, ultimately leading to the dismantling of traditional Igbo society. Thus, the novel addresses various forms of suppression—social, political, religious, cultural, economic, and educational—imposed on the Igbo tribe by the British colonial administration.

Abstract

This study examined the recruitment, selection, and compensation processes at Basic School A, identifying areas for improvement in human resource management. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the headteacher and a purposive sample of teachers. Thematic analysis revealed that the recruitment process involves completing education, national service, applying through the GES portal, and documentation before posting. Teachers preferred the previous decentralized system for greater commitment and reduced transportation costs. The compensation process includes validation by the Accountant Generals’ Department to eliminate absenteeism and “ghost” employees, though some teachers are only aware of monthly credits. Both teachers and the headteacher highlight staffing as needing improvement, suggesting that decentralizing recruitment to consider teachers’ residences would enhance job satisfaction and performance. Recommendations include decentralizing recruitment to allow district selection, establishing transparent validation guidelines, and shifting towards decentralized staffing for better resource management and improved teacher commitment.

Abstract

This research looks at study habits and examination anxiety as correlates of students’ attitudes towards examination malpractice using government tertiary institutions in Akwa Ibom State as a case study. Survey methodology was employed to collect data from the population of students in tertiary institutions in Akwa Ibom State. A total of 328 people from 10 government tertiary institutions in Akwa Ibom State filled out the survey, The Taro Yamane formula was used to determine a sample size of 400. With a mean criterion of 3.0, the statistical tools of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) were used to analyze the study's research topics. Reviewing the effects of study habits, causes of examination anxiety, and effects of students’ attitude towards examination malpractice will find that: poor time management, teaching strategies, peer pressure, threats from lectures, poor self-care and confidence, the quest for certificates, etc. all lead to examination malpractice in higher institutions in Akwa Ibom State. The study gave some recommendations and concluded that study habits, examination anxiety, and students’ attitudes have a joint influence on Examination malpractice therefore all hands must be on deck to make sure students in government higher institutions in Akwa Ibom State have a good study habits and attitude, and also eradicate any form of internal (within the educational system) examination anxiety from students so as to achieve knowledge and skills rather than a mere A4 certificate paper.

Abstract

This study evaluates the gender gap in education in West Kalimantan through an analysis of the Human Development Index (HDI) for the 2021-2023 period. The goal is to identify the differences between men and women in the education sector in different districts/cities, as well as explore the factors that cause these inequalities. With a descriptive approach and secondary data analysis from the Central Statistics Agency, it was found that most districts/cities still experience significant gender inequality. For example, Bengkayang Regency recorded the largest gap with a difference in HDI between men and women of 12.03 points, while Sambas Regency showed a smaller gap with an increasing trend for women. This study emphasizes the importance of more inclusive policies to improve access and quality of education for women, especially in disadvantaged areas. In addition, raising awareness of the importance of gender equality in education is considered important to create sustainable change. The results of this study contribute to the development of a more equitable education policy in West Kalimantan.
