Abstract

This study examines the concept of wasathiyah through the exemplary behavior demonstrated by KH. Nasaruddin Umar in welcoming Pope Francis to Indonesia in 2024. The challenge of religious fanaticism in society demands role models who are able to concretely realize moderation. This study applies a qualitative method through a literature review with symbolic interactionism theory to dissect the meaning behind the figure's movements, and uses interactive analysis developed by Miles and Huberman. The findings of this study reveal that KH. Nasaruddin Umar's movements are concrete manifestations of the principles of tasamuh, tawazun, and tawasuth. The uniqueness of this study lies in the role of religious leaders as role models in instilling religious moderation. In conclusion, the higher a person's understanding of religion, the higher their level of tolerance. Academically, it is recommended that the Islamic Religious Education curriculum implement religious moderation as a standard in shaping the character of tolerant and moderate students.

Abstract

This article aims to identify the reason behind the greatest revolution in human history. The revolution has astonished thinkers, both ancient and modern, due to its profound impact and lasting effects. This research used a qualitative, descriptive, and library-based approach to examine what has been written about that revolution, whether from the Qur'an, the Sunnah, or the works of scholars and thinkers. The findings of this research showed that the starting point of that revolution was the soul as the essence of humankind. Tawhīd, as the essence of Islam, has brought them out of the greatest complication of their souls. The Prophet Muhammad had educated them successfully by purifying their souls and practicing the highest moral standards. Through this new formation of soul, character, and behavior, they were transformed to be the best creatures God had ever produced for all humankind.

Abstract

Freedom is a crucial theme in Islamic philosophy and thought because it relates to the human ability to make life choices and be responsible for one's actions. However, freedom is often understood differently, particularly between philosophical and Islamic perspectives. This study's research problem is how the concept of freedom is understood in philosophy and Islam and how the two can be reconciled in everyday life. This study aims to explain the concept of freedom integratively through a dialogue between philosophy and Islam. The research method used is library research with a qualitative-philosophical approach to sources from Western philosophy, Islamic thought, and the Quran. The results of this study hypothesize that philosophy and Islam share a common perspective: freedom is understood as the ability to make conscious choices that are always accompanied by moral, social, and spiritual responsibility.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of cultural literacy on the perception of religious moderation among Generation Z at the State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Ampel Surabaya. The research is grounded in the importance of cultural literacy in fostering tolerance, openness, and national commitment in the rapidly evolving digital era. A quantitative correlational approach was employed, involving a population of 6,297 UINSA library visitors and a sample of 98 respondents determined using Slovin’s formula. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire measuring cultural literacy (understanding diversity, cultural sensitivity, and cross-cultural interaction) and religious moderation (national commitment, tolerance, anti-violence, and accommodation of local culture). The findings indicate a positive and significant effect (path coefficient = 0.900; T-Statistic = 24.708; p-value = 0.000) with an R-Square of 0.811, highlighting cultural literacy as a key determinant.
The Nature of Science in Islamic Economic Philosophy: An Ontological, Epistemological, and Axiological Analysis
Journal of Islamic Thought and Philosophy Vol. 5 No. 2 (2026): June

Abstract

This study explores the integration of ontology, epistemology, and axiology within the Tawhidic paradigm in economics. It addresses the dominance of the positivist paradigm in modern economics, which limits knowledge to empirical and value-neutral dimensions while neglecting moral and spiritual aspects. This research employs a qualitative approach based on library research and critical-conceptual analysis, drawing on authoritative sources in the philosophy of science, Islamic economics, and reputable international journal articles. Data are analyzed through close reading, thematic coding, and critical-reflective interpretation. The findings indicate that, ontologically, economic reality is viewed as part of divine creation; epistemologically, knowledge emerges from the integration of revelation and reason; and axiologically, economic activity is directed toward achieving falah and the objectives of maqasid al-shariah. The study also highlights the limitations of the positivist paradigm and contrasts it with the Tawhidic framework, which incorporates ethical and spiritual dimensions into economic analysis. This research contributes to the development of an integrated conceptual framework of Islamic economics and offers a critical alternative to the prevailing positivist paradigm.
Religious Imagination as a Basis for Inclusive Religiousity: A Study of Haidar Bagir and Henry Corbin

Abstract

Religious exclusivism in Indonesia's pluralistic society is frequently rooted not in moral deficiency but in a narrow epistemological horizon that reduces religion to formal identity and doctrinal compliance. Existing studies on religious imagination, whether moral-cognitive or symbolic-functional in orientation have not sufficiently addressed the ontological status of imagination within the Islamic philosophical tradition. This study fills that gap by analyzing Haidar Bagir's concept of religious imagination in Religion and Imagination through Henry Corbin's framework of the mundus imaginalis, employing a qualitative library-based approach with philosophical hermeneutics as its primary method. The analysis demonstrates that Bagir's instruments of qalb, fu'ad, and dzawq function as gradational organs of imaginal perception corresponding to Corbin's imaginatio vera, and that inclusive religiosity constitutes an ontological consequence of expanded religious consciousness rather than procedural tolerance. This study contributes a cross-tradition synthesis between 'irfani-Sunni thought and Ishraqi imaginal ontology, offering a philosophically grounded framework for addressing religious exclusivism and transforming religious education in pluralistic societies.

Abstract

This study examines hadiths related to the prohibition of same-clan (semarga) marriage in the Batak Toba tradition in the city of Sibolga, with a focus on the relationship between Islamic teachings and customary norms that are still maintained today. Previous studies generally discuss the prohibition of same-clan marriage from either the perspective of customary law or Islamic law separately; therefore, there have been limited studies that analyze the contextual meaning of hadiths within the social practices of Muslim Batak Toba communities. This research offers novelty by analyzing the relationship between hadith interpretation, local cultural values, and socio-religious practices in a multicultural society. The method used is qualitative research with a field study approach and a normative hadith analysis. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five informants consisting of customary leaders, Islamic scholars, and local community members, supported by observation and documentation. The data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing using a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings show that the prohibition of same-clan marriage is understood not merely as a religious ruling, but also as a form of respect for the kinship system and cultural identity. However, hadiths related to the selection of a spouse are interpreted flexibly, allowing customary law and Islamic teachings to coexist harmoniously without causing conflict within the community.
Religious Communication and Gender Negotiation in Pesantren: Reproducing the Legacy of Kiai As’ad Syamsul Arifin

Abstract

Academic analyses of gender in pesantren have predominantly focused on patriarchal structures. Yet, such approaches remain analytically constrained. They often overlook the everyday communicative processes through which gender norms are negotiated and enacted within religious life. This study interrogates the ongoing influence of Kiai As'ad Syamsul Arifin's communicative legacy in shaping gender at Pondok Pesantren Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Sukorejo. Utilizing qualitative methods, participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis within a critical-constructivist, case-based framework, the research demonstrates that women at Sukorejo occupy institutional spaces alongside men across education, leadership, public da'wah, and digital religious communication. Their participation is embedded within pesantren moral boundaries. Legitimacy is grounded in the embodiment of core ethical values closely associated with Kiai As'ad's legacy: sincerity, honesty, and communal responsibility. Gender relations are structured by two interwoven communicative modes. Sharia-based communication regulates conduct, space, and institutional order. Hakikat-based communication fosters ethical internalization, adaptability, and communal welfare. The Hakikat–Sharia Gender Communication Framework advanced here positions religious communication as the central mechanism through which gender norms are constituted, negotiated, and institutionalized within pesantren life.
Wasatiyah as Educational Philosophy: Internalizing Religious Moderation Through School Religious Culture

Abstract

This study examines school religious culture as a philosophical medium for internalizing wasatiyah values in the development of students’ religious moderation attitudes. Previous studies mostly position religious culture as moral habituation, while limited attention has been given to its role as a philosophical hidden curriculum within Islamic educational thought. This research aims to analyze how school religious culture functions as a philosophical and sociological instrument in shaping students’ wasatiyah consciousness. The study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach conducted at SMK Ma’arif NU Sunan Giri Driyorejo through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation analysis. The findings reveal that religious culture internalizes moderation values through three main pillars: inclusive daily rituals, institutional policies based on equality, and educators’ exemplary conduct rooted in the principle of uswah hasanah. These practices contribute to the development of students’ national commitment, tolerance, non-violence, and accommodative attitudes toward local culture. This study contributes to Islamic educational philosophy by positioning school religious culture as a hidden curriculum for internalizing wasatiyah consciousness in multicultural educational environments.
