Abstract

This study explores integrating cultural diversity and empowering student voices in classroom teaching practices. The aim is to examine how teachers incorporate cultural backgrounds into their lesson plans and classroom activities to foster an inclusive and democratic learning environment. A qualitative research design with a case study approach was employed to gather detailed insights into these practices. Data collection involved interviews with eight teachers and several students, direct classroom observations, and document analysis, including lesson plans and teaching notes. The study reveals that teachers in Indonesia actively integrate students' cultural backgrounds into the curriculum, using socio-cultural themes to create a more inclusive classroom atmosphere. Teachers empower students by encouraging them to voice their opinions during discussions and actively participate in decision-making. However, the study also identifies a gap in the consistent application of deliberative democracy principles, with many classrooms still dominated by a teacher-centered approach. The findings suggest that while efforts are being made to create a more inclusive and participatory learning environment, there is a need for further development in fully adopting deliberative democracy in educational practices. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of integrating cultural diversity and fostering student agency to enhance student engagement, motivation, and achievement in education.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the challenges teachers face in implementing the Independent Curriculum, especially in strengthening higher-order thinking Skills (HOTS) in religious learning at school. The research uses a qualitative research method with the type of case study research. Data is collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with Islamic boarding school caregivers, principals, and teachers, and analysis of related documents. The study results show that the readiness of teachers and school staff, the change in mindset from teacher-centric to student-centric, and the application of varied learning methods are the main challenges in implementing the Independent Curriculum. However, there has been an increase in students' critical thinking skills since the implementation of this curriculum. This research emphasizes the importance of ongoing support and intensive training for teachers to ensure the successful implementation of a more interactive and student-centered curriculum. The implications of this research are the need to develop educational policies that are more adaptive and responsive to the needs in the field, as well as the importance of continuous assistance to improve the quality of religious education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study focuses on exploring school-related factors that affect students' academic performance in public high schools in Kwara State, Nigeria. The main objective of this study is to identify and analyze how classroom management, teacher personality, physical environment, and teacher-student ratio contribute to student learning outcomes. This study uses a quantitative approach with a type of correlational descriptive research. Data was collected through structured questionnaire surveys filled out by teachers and students and in-depth interviews with several principals. Data analysis used descriptive and inferential statistics, including Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression. The results of the study show that classroom management and teacher-student ratio have a significant influence on students' academic performance. Teachers' personalities were also found to have a positive impact, although not as much as the other two factors. Meanwhile, while important, the physical environment has a relatively minor influence on learning outcomes. These findings suggest that the interaction between these factors overall affects students' academic achievement. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of paying more attention to effective classroom management and determining the optimal teacher-student ratio to improve students' academic performance. In addition, the results of this study can be used as a basis for policymakers and education practitioners to design more effective strategies to improve the quality of education in Nigeria. This research also opens up opportunities for more comprehensive follow-up research in understanding the complexity of factors affecting academic performance in various educational contexts.

Abstract

This study focuses on Australian students’ perceptions of Indonesian cultural values and their interaction experiences in a new social context. Applying qualitative research methods and a phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 20 Indonesian students at two universities in Indonesia. The study results indicate that students appreciate the traditional values in society and recognize the challenges in adjusting to the prevailing social norms in their new environment. Furthermore, students perceive Indonesian cultural diversity as a phenomenon that enriches their experiences, and their adaptation process shows the depth of understanding achieved through interaction with the local community. The implications of this study emphasize that the integration of teaching about cultural values in the language education curriculum is essential to help international students interact more effectively and enrich their understanding of the complexity of existing cultures. The findings also contribute to developing learning strategies that are more inclusive and responsive to the needs of cross-cultural students.
