Abstract

Communication plays a significant role in modern-day life. It is the process of sharing ideas, information, and messages with others. It encompasses writing and speaking, as well as nonverbal communication (such as facial expressions, body language, or gestures), visual communication (including images, pictures, paintings, photography, video, or film). The major electronic communication (including telephone calls, email, cable television, or satellite broadcasts) and social media have impact on human mind. Such communication is a vital part of community and personal life and is also important in business, education, and any other situation where people encounter each other. An attempt is made to present the Islamic Model of Communication, which states that communication should be for the betterment of society and to encourage good deeds. Such a model is based on divine guidance, which is based on messengers who communicate or forward to the general public. Considering its divine origin, the insights were drawn from the Quran, Sunnah of the Prophet and renowned scholars and established communication theories to validate the argument.

Abstract

The use of smartphones among university students has significantly increased, particularly as a primary medium for accessing da’wa information and supporting digital learning. Students of the Communication Science Department at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya also rely on smartphones as a tool for digital literacy, through learning applications, educational social media content, and various information platforms. This study aims to compare the utilization of Android- and iPhone-based smartphones in accessing da’wa information. This research employs a qualitative method with a comparative study approach, supported by the Uses and Gratifications theory to explain users’ motives and satisfaction in media use. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with students who use Android and iPhone devices, and were analyzed using a descriptive-comparative technique. The findings indicate that both smartphones serve similar educational purposes, yet differ in user orientation and experience. Android users show advantages in terms of flexibility, affordability, and efficiency, while iPhone users benefit from faster access to references, system stability, and integrated features. Challenges identified include lagging and performance decline on Android, as well as overheating and limited storage capacity on iPhone. Overall, smartphone utilization plays a significant role in enhancing independent learning, widening access to da’wa information, and shaping adaptive digital learning practices among university students.

Abstract

The increase of allowances for members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) during August 2025 triggered public debate due to perceptions of inequality and lack of transparency. Kompas.com framed this issue as a moral and social concern, emphasizing the gap between the welfare of political elites and the economic conditions of citizens. This study applies a constructivist approach and Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis to explore four key elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgment, and treatment recommendation. Data were collected from news articles published on Kompas.com between August 19 and September 8, 2025. Findings reveal that Kompas.com defines the core problem as the dissonance between DPR’s financial privileges and public economic realities. The media attributes the cause to structural opacity, elitist political culture, and a lack of moral empathy among legislators. Moral judgment highlights the ethical responsibility of public officials and the social implications of their decisions, framing the issue as a test of integrity and legitimacy. In terms of recommendations, Kompas.com emphasizes the need for transparency, accountability, and moral reform, urging DPR to improve communication and align policy decisions with public welfare. Overall, Kompas.com constructs narratives that not only report facts but actively shape public perception and awareness, reinforcing the media’s role as a guardian of social ethics and democratic accountability. In Islamic communication ethics, the controversy over DPR allowances reflects weak ‘qaulan sidīdan’ and tabayyun as the information required corrections. The lack of transparency indicates a failure of amanah, while the delivery of the policy was seen as lacking empathy and justice (qaulan ma‘rūfan, al-‘adl). The media plays the role of ‘hisbah’ by encouraging public oversight. The core issue lies in a crisis of honesty and moral sensitivity. The solution is transparency, honest clarification, and public-oriented communication.

Abstract

The social commerce phenomenon on TikTok transforms shopping activities into shoppertainment, where persuasion is delivered through signs working emotionally and culturally. This research has a dual objective: 1) to uncover the construction of meaning and contemporary myths in beauty product TikTok Live through Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, and 2) to analyze the ethical implications of the communication style from the Islamic Communication Perspective. The method utilized is qualitative descriptive with media text analysis, focusing on TikTok Live broadcasts by Skintific Indonesia. The sign analysis results show that the host utilizes popular diction (“racun,” “gercep,” “checkout now”) combined with enthusiastic intonation, gestures, and visual timers to build urgency and a parasocial bond. Semiotically, these signs successfully naturalize two main myths: “Instant Beauty” and “Smart Shopper is the Quick Buyer.” Normatively, the study concludes that the Instant Beauty Myth potentially violates the principle of Qaulan Sadida and the prohibition of Ghurur (deception) due to creating unrealistic expectations. Meanwhile, the Smart Shopper Myth promotes Israf (excessive consumption), contradicting the principle of tawazun (balance). This study asserts that TikTok live shopping serves as a cultural mechanism that generates ethical tension within the context of digital muamalah, demanding adherence to values of honesty and moderation.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Generation Z in preserving local Islamic culture in the digital era and aims to understand their contributions to sustaining such cultural practices. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach, the research utilizes in-depth interviews with six informants aged 20–21 years. The findings indicate that globalization and technological advancement influence the ways in which Generation Z understands and engages in cultural preservation, while social media provides new spaces for cultural revitalization through creative and collaborative content. Drawing on Robertson’s (1995) theory of glocalization, this study explains Generation Z’s capacity to integrate local identity into global trends. The results demonstrate that they function both as cultural heirs and innovators, maintaining the relevance of tradition through digital creativity, value adaptation, and the production of cultural content within digital spaces.

Abstract

The advancement of social media has transformed the ways in which Generation Z constructs and displays self-identity in digital spaces. This study stems from academic concerns surrounding the rising use of private accounts as a form of Islamic communication strategy among young people to balance the need for self-expression with the desire to maintain privacy. This research aims to understand the meaning behind the use of private Instagram accounts for Generation Z and the strategies they employ in managing their self-identity. A qualitative method with a phenomenological approach was used, involving in-depth interviews with several informants aged 20–24 who actively use private Instagram accounts. The findings reveal that private accounts are perceived not merely as a form of data protection, but as a safe space to express a more honest and emotional side of oneself. Generation Z employs strategies such as audience selection, content regulation, and the use of features like close friends and archives to demonstrate communication practices aligned with Islamic communication values. Their ways of limiting access, evaluating the appropriateness of information, and maintaining politeness in sharing posts reflect the principles of caution (tatsabbut), safeguarding personal dignity (hifz al-‘ird), and avoiding potential harm (mudarat) from excessive openness. The use of private accounts shows that Generation Z is not only aware of digital security but also practices Islamic ethical communication in shaping their self-identity on social media.

Abstract

This study examines the meaning of the lyrics in Merra by the band Colorcode and how the song is interpreted by the “Wong Kalahan” community within the context of their social identity formation. In contemporary society, music is not merely entertainment but also a medium for self-reflection and social communication that represents emotional experiences and collective identity. Using a qualitative approach that combines Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis with a hermeneutic paradigm, this research interprets the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings embedded in the lyrics of Merra. The findings show that the lyrics convey themes of regret, loss, and the desire to correct past mistakes. For the Wong Kalahan community, these themes are understood not only as emotional expression but also as a form of muhasabah (self-evaluation) from an Islamic perspective. Values such as repentance (taubat), patience (sabr), sincerity (ikhlas), and acceptance of divine decree (qadarullah) emerge in their collective interpretation, where the experience of “losing” is viewed as a spiritually maturing test.
