Abstract

Biology as the science of life is designed ultimately to educate individuals so that they can acquire knowledge about the basic essentials of living things and those of their community. Therefore, In this paper, we want to examine whether the students experiences in Biology Class will accomplish understanding and success in the learning outcome. Our sample is 500 Secondary School II students in Akinyele Local Government of Oyo state, in Biology Class. We used a survey design of the correlational type. Instruments used are Students Attitude to Biology Questionnaire (r=0.83), Science Experiences Inventory in Biology (r=0.72), and Students Achievement Test in Biology (r=0.76). The study reveals that the relative effect of Science experiences on attitude (?=0.228, t = 5.128; p<0.05) was significant, a negative, non-significant relationship between science experience (r = -0.024; p>0.05) and students’ achievement in Biology. Therefore, the findings of the study show that Science experience was the independent variable that strongly predicts students' attitude to Biology. Students should therefore be exposed to science experiences that will enhance a better attitude to Biology.

Abstract

Happiness is a subjective assessment of individual wellbeing. Adolescents, especially secondary school students living in Islamic Boarding School, experience dramatic changes from learning at their dormitory with face-to-face teaching method to distance learning at home with minimum activities outside their houses. The survey was conducted on 111 respondents of students who had to return home due to the outbreaks of covid-19 pandemic for two months. The research found that the dramatic changes made them had difficulty to adapt new activities at home for a long time while studying independently through distance learning. Only a third of the sample felt happy during the online learning while the majority felt negative emotions such as boredom, unhappiness, and loneliness. The adolescents’ life satisfaction and community engagement significantly correlated with happiness although the size effects were medium. Female students also had lower happiness variables than males. To maintain their happiness, during the pandemic, most of them prefer activities that mostly trigger a sedentary lifestyle.

Abstract

Out of around two hundred different variables that are known to have some relation with student achievement, Collective Teacher Efficacy (CTE) was reported to be among the most influential. Hence, CTE has received attention of many researchers as a topic investigation. The purpose of the present review is two-fold; (a) to present an overview of research on CTE, and (b) to draw some implications and suggest some recommendations for teacher development, school administration and further research on the topic. This paper engaged the methodology of systematic literature review to collect data from Google Scholar database.  Sixty-six sources were employed in the review. During the analysis, the reviewed papers were sorted into categories and themes based on their major focus. The results revealed four major factors that influence CTE; (i) principle’s leadership, (ii) teacher professional learning, (iii) teachers’ self-efficacy, and (iv) organisational factors. Furthermore, it was also found that CTE has a significant impact on (i) student learning, and (ii) teacher learning. The findings imply that (i) teacher development should providing avenues to improve teacher efficacy, (ii) school administrators need to focus on what might enhance teacher learning in school in order to foster positive CTE beliefs, and (ii) further research is needed in investigating the indirect link CTE has with leadership and relational/structural conditions in schools. Learning process as essential components of distance learning (synchronous or asynchronous).

Abstract

The objective of the study was to realize of Lampung local wisdom teaching materials Search, Draw, and Make-based that were feasible and effective to use to improve the creativity of students. The study was conducted at IV.A SDN 2 Gedong Tataan totaling 10 students. The study was a Research and Development (R&D) carried out by referring to the Borg & Gall design model with a simplification of 8 steps. The results of this study were in accordance with the results of the feasibility test for the development of human resource-based Lampung local wisdom teaching materials using material experts reaching a percentage of 78%, media experts reaching a percentage of 76%, linguists reaching a percentage of 79% and the results of effectiveness were proven by pre-test results 64.5% and post test 86.5%. This indicates that the effect of using Lampung local wisdom teaching materials Search, Draw, and Make-based is proven to improve the creativity of students in the aspects of fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration.

Abstract

The onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic forces institution to close face-to-face classes, thereby resulting to a paradigm shift towards remote learning. Unconventional learning strategies were reinforced to continuously provide education amidst the crisis. This led to the conversion of classroom-oriented learning resources into learning resources adapted to distance learning. At present, the placement of alternative learning modalities in a new normal classroom setting has become a mainstream point of discussion in the education sector. In light of the new trend in education brought by the pandemic or other similar circumstances, this study aims to identify students’ perceptions regarding the utilization of synchronous and asynchronous distance learning resources in Grade 12 level.  It also highlighted students’ preferences regarding the synchronous and asynchronous mode of delivering instructions.  The participants were randomly selected 317 Grade 12 students enrolled in Special Health Sciences STEM track from a private medical institution situated in an urban area of Cavite in the Philippines. These Grade 12 students had immersed experience in synchronous online classes along with asynchronous learning activities. A dependent sample t-test was used to find out difference between the use of synchronous and asynchronous learning modalities. Conceptual understanding of students was measured based on their performance on summative assessments both in synchronous and asynchronous modalities. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were also used to present students’ evaluation on the different distance learning aspects particularly on the teaching approach, learning materials and instructions, activities, and assessments. Results revealed that students have high interest on the teaching approach in asynchronous modality consistent with obtaining better performance in the asynchronous assessment. Students valued the asynchronous threaded discussions, the availability of relevant learning materials, and teacher’s guidance and scaffolding on the learning process as essential components of distance learning (synchronous or asynchronous).

Abstract

Multigrade classes in the Philippines are usually present in Elementary schools in remote areas where few students are in one-year level. Thus, teachers then handle multiple grade levels at a time. This study investigated the challenges and Coping strategies of Multigrade teachers in the western part of the Philippines. The researchers employed a Transcendental phenomenological method in this study. They gathered the data through one-to-one interviews of multigrade teachers who have been teaching for at least three years. Following the data analysis of Kleiman (2004), the results revealed that there were intrinsic, extrinsic, and system challenges experienced by these teachers. These challenges involved unpreparedness in teaching multigrade, low multigrade allowances, the experience of stress, language barrier, classroom management struggles, lack of resources, danger in going to stations, workload, absenteeism, lack of stakeholders’ support, and lack of trainings. However, they showed positivity in their work and applied the right coping strategies to lessen their burden. Among these coping strategies were praying, using the web, having time management, self-conditioning, developing plans, and doing research. The participants believed that handling Multigrade classes requires time, effort, and balance. Through these experiences, teachers learned to adjust and cope with the challenges they were facing. Thus, they became better educators.

Abstract

The teaching and learning process as if there must always be an increase in effectiveness in order to achieve the goals to be achieved. The development of the world of information technology has now become so fast and has penetrated various sides of human life. The use of information technology such as e-learning, one of which is through web-based learning, will bring significant changes both in terms of the education system to be developed, the material to be delivered, how the instructional and learning processes will be carried out, and the obstacles that will be faced either by the education recipient and the educators. This research uses bibliometric analysis to map how e-learning is intended from several previous journals using vosviewer. This research concludes that e-learning is unavoidable, especially in the industrial era 4.0, where e-learning is believed that education can be accessed anytime, anywhere, and by anyone.
