Abstract

AbstractThe emergence of postcolonial criticism makes the voice of Africans’ colonial experience heard and seriously considered. In some ways, this voice is a little bit different from what the European poets or novelists have expressed in their literary texts. For most Europeans, colonialism is perceived as a civilizing force that benefits and progresses to the colonized African societies, primarily through one of its arms: Christianity. Although this religion, as most missionaries propose, has nothing to do with the worldly affair, such as a lust for natural resources and colony, it becomes an important cultural element to help the Europeans conquer the colonized African natives. During the era of colonialism, Christianity in Western discourse is perceived as a means of setting the African natives free from the barbaric traditional belief and savage way of life. Through Christianity, the colonized African natives are educated and taught to live a more modern and civilized life. However, some African writers at times give a different perspective on Christianity. This article explores how Christianity is portrayed through the characters and conflicts in Arrow of God (1964), a novel written by a Nigerian named Chinua Achebe. This portrayal can lead to a postcolonial discourse the novel intends to propose.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research describes the semantic features of metaphors found in sports discourse in Kompas daily newspaper using semantic decomposition, contrasting the semantic components of the source language and the metaphorical expression to discover the meaning, the similar association, and the functions of the metaphors written in the course. Nonparticipant observation, critical reading, and note-taking were used to collect the data. Then all the data was analyzed by using referential identity and distributional methods with substitution and paraphrasing techniques. The first result of this research showed that each fundamental element elaborated by analyzing each domain's diagnostic components could explain the association between the source language and the metaphor. The second result is that the text's association included four similarities; attributes, movement, qualities, and action. The third conclusion is that the metaphors' functions explain and decribe the situation, entertain the team, and evaluate the team. Abstract

AbstrakSetiap bahasa bersifat unik. Kata Kunci: Implisit, eksplisit, padanan kata, karakteristik bahasa AbstractEvery language is unique. Language has a specific way to state its idea. The Indonesian language has its way that differs from the Batak language in conveying their meaning, eventhough both belong to the same region, that is Indonesian territory. These two languages have their specific characteristics in expressing their thoughts. Meaning in a language can be defined implicitly and explicitly. To explain a meaning implicitly means that the meaning is expressed without using a particular word and a language structure, but the reader understands it. To tell a meaning explicitly implies that the meanings are expressed by using a word or by the language's structure. To convey the meaning explicitly or implicitly depends on thecontext or by some cirstumstaces and the lexicon's availability in a language. To express a meaning explicitly may avoid ambiguity, vagueness, and misunderstanding. But, describing the meaning explicitly all the time may cause ignorant, as if other people know nothing about the topic of the discussion. The data used is taken from Patik Ni Debata Nasampului Dohot Lapatanna for Batak Language and Dasa Titah for the Indonesian language. This writing shows that the Batak language uses straightforward way more in comparison to the Indonesian language. This study aims to draw a characteristic of the Batak language and Indonesian language, especially in expressing their meaning. Key words : Implicit, Explicit, equivalence, language characteristics

Abstract

Kata kunci: absurd, absurditas, benalu, pemberontakan ABSTRACTThis paper aims to show the forms of absurdity in Nescio's novella, Si Benalu. The forms of absurdity in the novella are found through an analysis of how the main character Japi sees his surrounding life and other people's judgments of Japi, who is called Si Benalu in the text. To analyze the concept of absurdity, the writer uses the concept of absurdity by Albert Camus. The result shows a journey of awareness of the main character Japi towards the absurdity of life. Japi, with his idealism, chooses to become a "parasite" to show his rebellion against a life that he considers absurd. Besides, some forms of absurdity are also demonstrated through Japi's interactions with his three friends, namely Bavink, Koekebakker, and Hoyer. Japi's idealism makes him seen absurd by his friends. However, his failure to maintain his idealism makes his life ended tragically. Japi finally chooses to commit suicide, meaning that Japi consciously relinquishes power over his autonomous self to this absurd world.Key words: absurd, absurdity, parasite, rebellion

Abstract

AbstractMaxim as a politeness principle is a substantial issue because if people obey the regulation, they will enact their expression more thoughtfully. One that corresponded to the principle is the scale of politeness, a measurement of the level of politeness. This paper aimed to analyze politeness maxims and determine the scales of politeness used by the characters’ utterances in the Eclipse movie. The writers used a qualitative descriptive method in this research since the data described the problematic context. The politeness of maxim and scale of politeness were investigated based on Leech’s principle. The phases of analyzes included listing data with politeness maxim and classifying the data into six maxim categories. The next step was analyzing and interpreting the data based on Leech’s scale of politeness used by characters’ utterances. The last was portraying an inference from the result of the analysis. From the analysis of twenty-six data, the most dominant politeness maxim is the generosity maxim (nine data), and the least was the agreement maxim (one data). The rest were seven approbation maxims, six sympathy maxims, and three tact maxims. The politeness scale was cost-benefit (twenty-three data) and optionality (three data).Key Words: politeness maxim, politeness principle, scale of politeness

Abstract

Abstract:This research aims to find out the class shift and structure shift in the simple sentences of Turtles All The Way Down novel by John Green (2018) and the translation into Bahasa Indonesia by Prisca Primasari (Penerbit Qanita, 2018). This research uses the theory of translation shift by Catford and equivalence by Nida. Catford divided translation shift into two, and they are level shift and category shift. Category shift is divided into four: structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intrasystem shift. From those kinds of translation shifts, the writer chose two types of translation shifts: class shift and structure shift. According to Nida, there are two types of equivalence; they are formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence. After analyzing all data that has been collected by using those two theories which have been mentioned above, the writer finds out nine kinds of class shift which occur. They are pronoun to the noun, adverb to the adjective, the preposition to the verb, verb to an adverb, verb to pronoun, noun to adjective, adjective to the verb, the verb to the adjective, and adverb to verb. Other than that, for structure shift, the writer finds out that word order changes, extra word added, and removal of some sentence elements in the simple sentences. The structure shift and class shift done by the translator show that each simple sentence with structure shift and class shift in the novel has one of two types of equivalence based on Nida’s theory.Keyword: Translation, class shift, structure shift, translation shift, equivalence
