Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to find the representation of feminism in the film Samjin Company English Class (2020). This film was written by Lee Jong-pil and set in 1995. This film tells the story of three girlfriends working for eight years in a large company in South Korea. Even though they have worked for a long time, the three of them are still treated differently. This film shows how female employees who only graduated from high school are able to prove their strengths by figuring out some cases of company waste leakage and corruption committed by company officials. They also fight for equal rights in their work. Their efforts, struggles, and courage are finally not in vain. The method used in this paper is a descriptive method. This research uses Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory to analyze the representation of feminism in the film. Signs and meanings are analyzed through some scenes and dialogues in the film showing the struggles of the three friends. The result of this research is the finding of 13 scenes that represent feminism which can be seen from the female characters’ struggle to grab their dreams.

Abstract

This article aims to show the postcolonial discourse of the Philippines through the utilization of magical realism in the novel When the Elephants Dance (2002) by Tess Uriza Holthe. When the Elephants Dance is intrinsically structured into four main sections which describe the events leading up to Japan’s surrender. Inside these four sections, the story is integrated with five sub-stories from accompanying characters which are A Cure for Happiness, Mang Minno, Ghost Children, The Twilight People, and The Portrait of an Aristocrat. These sub-stories act as one of the highlights of the novel since they are utilized by the characters as a way to retain their sanity and cope with the tragic experiences of living in the middle of a war. The characters’ coping mechanism of telling their life stories that are filled with Filipino mythology reflects the postcolonial discourse of the Philippines prior to and during World War II. With the research limitation of analyzing the story of Mang Minno, this research will use the theory of magical realism by Wendy B. Faris to see the presence of magical realism, as well as the utilization of New Historicism as a bridge to analyze the postcolonial discourse. The results show that by integrating magical realism and history, Holthe was successful in depicting historical events that occurred in the Philippines under the fictional aspect of the novel. Holthe used magical realism to conceal the postcolonial discourse of alterity and emphasize the magnificence of Catholicism in the Philippines.

Abstract

This paper aims to attest the author's interpretation that Sensei's character in the novel "Kokoro" by Natsume Soseki, fits into the category of individuals who are driven to death. Through Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic approach, the writer is expected to prove his interpretation through an integrated analysis. Psychoanalytic elements contained in the novel include instincts, structure of personality and death drive. According to Freud, human instincts are divided into two: life instincts and death instincts. In Freud’s structure of personality, the discussed topic will be focused on the id, ego, and superego. Id, ego, and superego will be the subject of how Sensei's character falls into the category of individuals who are driven to death. The method used in answering the research problems is by using close reading, focalization, and data collection. The novel "Kokoro" tells the characters of I and Sensei. I and Sensei are two people met just by chance, unrelated to each other. This paper focuses on Sensei’s part where he tells his past to I. At the end of the contents of the letter, Sensei stated that he had committed suicide. The letter turns out to be Sensei’s testament. The results of this paper are, in the novel "Kokoro", Sensei's character is an individual who: 1) has a life instinct and a death instinct in different periods of time, 2) has an id, ego, and superego which is proof that Sensei has the trait of being driven to death.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Javanese people are often described as having traditions and attitudes that are sincere and harmonious. In Indonesian literature, images of Javanese people are often presented, especially by authors of Javanese descent. However, there are also some images of Javanese people that appear from authors who come from outside Java, even foreign nationals (non-Javanese). The next question is how the Javanese attitude to life is depicted in novels written by Javanese and non-Javanese authors. For this purpose, the author takes two samples of Indonesian prose, namely Pengakuan Pariyem by Linus Suryadi AG (a Javanese author) and Babad Ngalor Ngidul by Elizabeth D. Inandiak (a French author). Through these two novels, the author wants to see the depiction of Javanese life attitudes from the perspective of authors with different cultural backgrounds. By looking at the structure of the work, narrative, and the concept of representation, the author wants to dissect the depiction of Javanese attitudes of life from the two authors who have different backgrounds. The results of the analysis in this article show that both authors portray the Javanese identity and attitude to life as often shown in various literatures, namely as people who uphold harmony and practice life that heeds the world. However, both have a unique narrative style, which shows that Inandiak, a French author, has a tendency to portray a more orientalist tone than Linus Suryadi AG's narrative as a person of Javanese descent.

Abstract

Since the echo of the "back to sea" policy, there have been many things that have become the concern of the Indonesian government to gain revenue from Indonesia's marine resources, including its tourism potential. In implementing the program, several issues arose related to the welfare of the maritime community itself. In the collection of short stories "Nelayan itu Berhenti Melaut" by Safar Banggai, these issues are raised as the main narrative. Therefore, this article will try to dissect the issue of commodification narratives and power relations in several short stories in this collection of short stories. The analysis in this article will use a sociological approach, borrowing critical theories centered on the concepts of commodification and power relations. The results of this analysis indicate that the sea communities narrated in several short stories are bound by power relations that make their voices muffled and make them reified as objects. This form of commodification is not only seen in the objectification of society and its settlements, which are considered exotic, but also in socio-cultural practices that have changed because the traditions have been mortgaged

Abstract

Crying in H Mart, a memoir by Michelle Zauner, describes how Michelle, as the main character, recalls her memories through Korean food. After her mother died, she tried to keep connected with her mother through the activity that they did together related to Korean food. Some activities included cooking, eating, visiting restaurants, preparing food, etc. While reconnecting to her memory, Michelle also tried to keep connected with the heritage that her mother had given to her, which is a Korean identity. This study aims to show the connection between food, memory, and culture in the Crying in H Mart memoir. The writers use a descriptive qualitative method with a close reading of the memoir.  Abarca's concept of Holistic Culinary is needed to analyze the connection between food, memory, and culture portrayed in the memoir. The result shows that the connection of food, memory, and culture enabled Michelle to reconnect to her experience with her family, especially her mother. From reconnecting to her past, Michelle's emotions were triggered. The way Michelle reconnected to her past makes her keep connected with her mother's heritage and explore the Korean culture more through interacting with Korean people, doing self-cultural exploration, and promoting Korean culture.
