Abstract

Reproductive Performance of Bada Fish Rasbora argyrotaenia (Bleeker, 1849) Through Combination of Estradiol and Spirulina in Feed. Bada fish (Rasbora argyrotaenia) is a type of fish from Lake Maninjau, West Sumatra, which has high economic value. Efforts to increase the reproductive ability of Bada broodstock were carried out by improving the quality of the feed through the addition of nutrients and hormonal stimulation to fish feed. This study aimed to improve the reproductive performance of female Bada broodstock by providing a combination of the estradiol-17 hormone and spirulina in the feed. The treatments tested in this study included control feed without the addition of the estradiol-17 hormone and spirulina (P0), the addition of the estradiol-17 hormone at 7 g/kg of feed (P1), the addition of spirulina at 30 g/kg of feed (P2), and the addition of a combination of estradiol17 hormone and spirulina at 7 g/kg feed and 30 g/kg feed, respectively (P3). This experimental study used a completely randomized design method with four treatments and four replications. The relative fecundity value was calculated by comparing the number of eggs and the weight of the brood fish. Fecundity value was obtained by the gravimetric method. The results showed that the relative fecundity was 730–1,126 eggs/kg brood weight, the degree of fertilization was 80.91–92.90%, and the hatching rate was 59.7–84.0%. The value of the gonadal development index increased along with the rate of gonadal development due to the process of oocyte development which caused the size of the ovaries to increase in the female fish. The relative fecundity values in the experiments P2 and P3 were higher than those in P0 and P1. This is because the increase in vitellogenin synthesis was followed by an increase in the number of oocytes that will absorb the vitellogenin. This study proves that the addition of the estradiol17 hormone and spirulina into the feed can improve the reproductive ability and egg quality of Bada fish.

The spatial and temporal variations of environment and anthropogenic activities have resulted in changes in the physical and chemical conditions of the waters. These changes thereby affect the abundance and structure community of the plankton in the aquatic environment. This study aims to determine plankton's abundance and structure community in the Pasir River that flows from Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta, to Purworejo Regency, Central Java. The research was conducted in the Pasir River from December 2019 to January 2020. The samplings were carried out using a purposive sampling method at five sampling stations, and the samples were collected from the predetermined four sampling points in each station. Water quality parameters including temperature, salinity, current velocity, pH, organic matter contents, nitrate and phosphate concentrations were also measured as supporting data. The plankton data were analyzed to determine the abundance, diversity, and dominance indexes. The results showed that the average plankton density was 3,002 individuals/L, with the highest density occurring at Station 5 (4,152 individuals/L). The average diversity index was 1.11 (medium category), and the average dominance index was 0.03 (low category). The lowest abundance and diversity index were found at Station 4 due to the high concentrations of nitrate and phosphate because the location was close to residential areas. The dominant phytoplanktons were the Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae classes, while the zooplanktons were Maxillopoda and Branchiopoda.

Abstract

The Contents of Heavy Metals Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), and Mercury (Hg) in the Spotted Barbs(Barbodes binotatus) bodies and Cikaniki River Water, Bogor Regency. The Cikaniki River has experienced a decrease in water quality caused by human activities, both extractive and non-extractive, which can potentially cause pollution. Such activities that can pose a pollution threat include Unlicensed Gold Mining (PETI) and the mining industry of PT Antam, which is located in the vicinity of the Cikaniki River. Heavy metal pollutants in the waters of the Cikaniki River consist of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg). Heavy metals that enter water bodies can also accumulate in fish bodies. This study aims to determine the heavy metal contents of lead, cadmium, and mercury in the water of the Cikaniki River and the bodies of Spotted Barbs (Barbodes binotatus) inhabiting the river. The samplings were carried out using the purposive sampling method at five stations representing upstream and downstream watersheds, gold industrial areas, illegal mining areas, and irrigation areas. The study was conducted for three months, from January to March 2020. Tests for heavy metal levels in the water and fish bodies were conducted using ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry). The results showed that the contents of heavy metals Pb and Hg in the water were still below the threshold values of the quality standard according to the Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 22 of 2021 Appendix VI, while the Cd content in the Cikaniki River water was below 0.02 mg/L. The cadmium content in the fish was below 0.4 mg/kg, while the contents of mercury and lead in the fish have exceeded the threshold values of the 1989 WHO quality standard. The highest accumulation of heavy metals in the fish was found in gold mining areas. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the most influential environmental parameter on the contents of heavy metals in the water and fish bodies was the water temperature. The presence of heavy metals in the water and fish of the Cikaniki River should be monitored as they accumulate in the human bodies.

Abstract

Community Structure of Rotifers in Lake Hanjalutung, Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan Province. Lake Hanjalutung is an oxbow lake that located in the Rungan watershed in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan Province. This lake has potential fishery resources. Rotifers are zooplankton that plays an essential role in the food chain of the lake ecosystem. This study aims to reveal the composition and structure of the Rotifers community in Lake Hanjalutung. The research is expected to provide scientific information and limnological data on an oxbow lake that is useful for the future development and management of Lake Hanjalutung. The zooplankton samples were collected vertically from the bottom to the water surface using a zooplankton net in the rainy season (April) and dry season (October) in 2016 at six sampling points. The zooplankton was identified up to the genus level. Water quality parameters were measured by water quality checker Horiba U-53G. The community structure was analyzed by calculating the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H'), the Simpson dominance index (D), and the Evenness index (E). The results found that the 15 genera of Rotifers were evenly distributed (E = 0.35–0.46), and no dominant species was found (D = 0.08–0.19) in either the rainy or dry season. The average density of Rotifers in the rainy season (33 individuals/L) was higher than in the dry season (18 individuals/L). The diversity index (H') ranged 2.02–2.59 (rainy season) and 1.73–2.36 (dry season). Thus, the community and species diversity of Rotifers in Lake Hanjalutung are in the moderate category. The water quality of the lake is entirely reasonable to support zooplankton life.

Abstract

Identification of Fishing Gears for Eel (Anguilla spp.) and Their Relationship to Catches in the Cikaso River. The Cikaso River is one of the rivers on the south coast of Sukabumi that has a relatively high abundance of eel. So, it is very potential as a fishing location. Fishermen have been operating various types of eel fishing gear in this river. This study identified different types of fishing gear used to catch eels in the Cikaso River, Sukabumi Regency, West Java. This identification is expected to be helpful for the sustainability of eel and fisheries policy in this area. The research was conducted using a survey method from March to August 2019 at seven research stations along the Cikaso River, which included the part of the river traversed by eels of various stadia. Data were collected through direct observation at the research sites to determine the distribution of fishing gear, equipment design and construction, fishing grounds, operating methods, and catches. In addition, interviews with fishermen through questionnaires were conducted to assess the level of environmental friendliness of the fishing gear used. The information generated from this research is that the eel catches in the Cikaso River consisted of glass eel, elver, yellow eel, and silver eel, which were scattered along the river. The adult eel species found during the study were Anguilla bicolor bicolor and Anguilla marmorata. The fishing gear used in the Cikaso River consisted of betel, sodok, bubu, kopyokan, jamparing, and fishing rods. Considering the exploitation of eel resources on the south coast of Sukabumi, many policies to support eel management have been issued. With these regulations and synergies from different parties, it is hoped that preserving eels in nature can support the lives of coastal fishermen.
