Abstract

This study aims to analyze the encounter of cemetery cases related to Sapta Dharma indigenous religion and how it deals with the state’s regulation on the religious freedom in terms of expression and negotiation with the participants including the society as the victim, the local government, and the dynamic interaction among them. The framework of religious freedom by Elizabeth Shakman Hurd on Believing in Religious Freedom and the discourse of Human Rights and Religion within the debates by Rosalind. I. J. Hackett used to analyze the data. This study found that the case of cemetery in Sapta Dharma in some villages which are located in the region of Brebes Central Java underlines a significant notion on the expression of religious freedom for the Indigenous Religion. Religious freedom in the case of the needs of cemetary in Sapta Dharma also attaches the idea of majority and minority. Sapta Dharma as the minority and Islam as the majority of religion in Brebes create another standing point on the notion that minority is always in contact with such discrimination and oppression. Negotiation and mediation are two important things in putting off the case.

Abstract

Manaqib is a familiar term at moslem society in Indonesia, especially at Nahdiyyin circle, and also for Banjarese moslem society (an ethnic in South Kalimantan, Borneo). Moreover, this manaqib is already become a tradition since several decades ago, but its still flare up and lively until now. Consistency of this manaqib tradition is not release from the influence of the charismatic scholars which always spread the call to continue to traditionalize the reading of manaqib, one of which is through their works in the field of this manaqib. Among them is where the classical ulama like Siti Khadijah al-Kubra, Shaikh Samman al-Madani, Shaikh Abdul Qadir al-Jailani and the local ulama are like the Shaikh Arsyad al-Banjari, Tuan Guru Kasyful Anwar, Tuan Guru M. Zaini Gani, and many others. With qualitative-anthropological studies, this study concludes that the writing of the books by the Banjar clerics was influenced by the strength of the tarekat teachings, especially the Naqsabandiyah and Sammaniyah orders. The influence is the emergence of public trust in the sacredness of the reading of the manaqib text itself, which is believed to bring various blessings such as avoiding calamity, expanding fortune, and being aware of various other purposes.

Abstract

This study aims to explores Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s interpreted the Jews in his The Holy Qur’an: Text, Translation and Commentary. His interpretation becomes worth to discuss due to his profile as a Moslem officer of Great Britain which politically supported the contemporary Jews in Israel. Additionally, Yusuf Ali was the big fan of the concept of inter-faith dialogue. On the other hand, he was so proud of being a Moslem so that he wrote an English translation and commentary of the Koran in order international society can understand Islam well. This paper is going to show how Yusuf Ali put himself as a Moslem and at the same time, a Britain officer, (and also admirer) who also lived in non-Moslem milieus. The discussion will explore two parts. The first one is the diction used by Yusuf Ali to interpret the Jews verses, while the second is the contemporary contextualization on his interpretation on Jews verses into nowadays life. Using library research method through primary and secondary references combined with a hermeneutical approach, this paper comes to the following conclusion. First, there found five dictions to mention the Jews at the Jews verses, which are Jews, those who followed the Jewish law, those that stand on Judaism, those who follow the spirit of Moses and those who follow the Jewish scripture. Second, by the diverse diction, Yusuf Ali implied that The Jews is all about the spirit and physical action of individual instead of religious institution or affiliation.
