Abstract

This paper examines the dynamics of Islamic thought found in the Balkan region with special emphasis on the modernist and reformist thought of Husein Đozo (1912-1982). Arguably one of the most prominent Bosnian Muslim scholars in the last two hundred years, H. Đozo was born at a time when the external challenges to the Muslim world were many and its internal problems both complex and overwhelming. Đozo therefore made it his primary goal to reinterpret the teachings of Islam to a generation for whom the truths and realities of their religion had fallen into disuse. And indeed, with his numerous works and other scholarly engagements and efforts, Husein Đozo represents a rare and precious example of an indigenous Balkan Muslim scholar who recognised the impact of modernity on religious traditionalism. Even a brief survey of Đozo’s scholarly efforts will tell one that he raised his voice against dogmatism and rigid Islamic thought.

Abstract

As many countries would benefit from promoting women empowerment, several developing countries are also endeavoring for it. Pakistan and Indonesia are among those countries who took serious measures to improve the state of women empowerment. This study provides the overview of the efforts of Indonesia and Pakistan made at state level to empower their women. This is the era when each country matches the rate of progress; opportunity would also come from raising the female participation. In both countries, hundred many women live their lives under the societal pressure which is being exerted by ancient traditions. The patriarchal structure swept up women to live as hand-maiden of men in society. In the result of multifaceted discrimination, women are lagging behind in many fields. The main theme of this research is to examine the level of women empowerment by focusing the arenas of politics, economic and social. This nature of this study is descriptive as well as exploratory. Qualitative method has been adopted to carry out this research. While conducting this research, both primary and secondary sources of data will be used. This study will be useful to identify the causes which detain the progress of women. This brief but comprehensive analysis will also help to recommend some suggestions to improve level of women empowerment in both states.

Abstract

Being one of the presumably earliest Quran manuscripts which may belong to the Umayyad era, Tübingen M a VI 165 is referred to as an ideal material for a paleographical study to resolve inquiries on earlier muṣḥafs written at the time of ʿUthmān and were elaborately described in Muslim traditional sources. This paper attempts to measure to what extent does Tübingen M a VI 165 Quran Manuscript reflect and adhere to what traditional Muslim sources reveal on earliest codices of ʿUthmān, particularly textual patterns, consonantal and vocal variations reflecting modes of recitation in addition to their scripts, overall and detailed verse numberings, to develop our vision on the transcription of muṣḥafs at the Umayyad period.

Abstract

This paper is a reading of the offer that Muhammad Arkoun has given in the development efforts in the study of the Qur'an in the Contemporary era. Muhammad Arkoun's fundamental disharmony lies in the fact that the reality of society has completely changed, and therefore, requires a new model of reading authoritative religious texts, namely the Qur'an and Hadith. The methodological offers made by classical Islamic thinkers, in the view of Muhammad Arkoun, are considered no longer able to answer the problems of today's society. The majority of them are still often caught up in religious dogmatic pairings. To solve this problem, Muhammad Arkoun offered three models of rereading the Qur'an, namely with linguistic, anthropological, and historical approaches. The results of these three offers of reading of the Qur'an will lead to the results of interpretations relevant to the needs of people living in contemporary reality.

Abstract

This article aims to identify Sheikh Ahmad Khatib Al-Minangkabauwi's initial concept of Paper Money, which in the early 19th century wrote Raf'ul Iltibas. Through a qualitative approach, with critical extraction analysis, several things can be revealed related to the thoughts of Sheikh Ahmad Khatib Al-Minangkabauwi about paper money. From a careful reading of Sheikh Ahmad Khatib Al-Minangkabauwi, several significant findings can be formulated: First, in his work, Ahmad Khatib Al-Minangkabauwi applies two methods lead to his critical thinking about Paper money, namely the comparative law method and Qiyas. Second, Sheikh Ahmad Khatib believes that paper money has similarities with dinars and dirhams in several aspects, namely the function of its nominal value. It is just that the existence of these values is different. The value of paper money is politico-economic. Meanwhile, the nominal value of dirhams and dinars is intrinsic and natural. Sheikh Ahmad Khatib Al-Minangkabau's work related to Paper Money is written heavily from the perspective of fiqh. Briefly, it is challenging to describe economic assumptions from work. As a result, articles are also thicker with fiqh analysis. Sheikh Ahmad Khatib Al-Minangkabauwi's view regarding Paper Money becomes the foundation for the theory of the value of money in Islam. However, it is rarely disclosed, so that this paper can serve as the foundation of the value for money offered by scholars from Indonesia in the early 19th century. Strengthening the idea that money is not suitable as a commodity must be positioned as capital to be productive and finally becomes why trade is compelling and becomes the most practical reason for removing Zakat from it. There are not many, not even articles that attempt to reveal the concept of classical ulama from Indonesia relating to Paper Money. This article manages to identify that, and at the same time, becomes a novelty.
