Abstract

Phenomena of depleting of water resources and increasing water demand have been occurring in Konaweha watershed. Combine with other degraded conditions, Konaweha watershed have been categorized as priority watershed in Southeast Sulawesi Province. Land use change is the main factor to influence water balance that indicated by the increasing maximum discharge in rainy seasons and decreasing minimum discharge in dry seasons. The objective of this research were (1) to analize the effects of land use changes onwater resources of Konaweha watershed; (2) to analize the availability of water resources to meet water demand as well as minimum proportion of forest cover in the watershed to ensure sustainable water resources in Konaweha watershed. This research was conducted in Konaweha watershed for 7 months from July 2011 to February 2012.  The result of this research showed that forest, swamp, plantation and bush area tended to decline exponentially year by year. The decline of forest area have significantly decreased minimum discharge of Konaweha River in dry seasons and increased maximum discharge in rainy seasons.  These condition have caused a significant deficit of water resources in dry seasons since period of 2004 to 2010 eventhough there was no deficit of annual water resources.

Abstract

As many countries would benefit from promoting women empowerment, several developing countries are also endeavoring for it. Pakistan and Indonesia are among those countries who took serious measures to improve the state of women empowerment. This study provides the overview of the efforts of Indonesia and Pakistan made at state level to empower their women. This is the era when each country matches the rate of progress; opportunity would also come from raising the female participation. In both countries, hundred many women live their lives under the societal pressure which is being exerted by ancient traditions. The patriarchal structure swept up women to live as hand-maiden of men in society. In the result of multifaceted discrimination, women are lagging behind in many fields. The main theme of this research is to examine the level of women empowerment by focusing the arenas of politics, economic and social. This nature of this study is descriptive as well as exploratory. Qualitative method has been adopted to carry out this research. While conducting this research, both primary and secondary sources of data will be used. This study will be useful to identify the causes which detain the progress of women. This brief but comprehensive analysis will also help to recommend some suggestions to improve level of women empowerment in both states.

Abstract

The farming systems in Konaweha watershed are mostly mixed garden that are partly managed intensively as wellas traditionally. The objectives of this research were to identify and classify agroforestry systems that were practicedby farmers, to study the effect of the agroforestry systems on soil properties, hydrological indicators, and erosion,as well as to analyze farm management feasibility of agroforestry systems to establish sustainable agriculturesystem. The study was carried out in Konaweha watershed, Southeast Sulawesi. The results indicated thatagroforestry systems in this area were devided into four types i.e. sylvopastoral-perennial crops with pasture,agrosylvicultural-perennial crops, agrosylvicultural-multystrata systems, and sylvopastoral-multystrata systems. The four types of agroforestry systems significantly increased the soil aggregate stability, soil porosity at 30 cm indepth, organic matter, soil organic carbon, and microorganisms population. In addition, the agroforestry haddecreased runoff and erosion significantly. Therefore, the erosion rate from the four types of agroforestry systemwas below the value of tolerated soil loss (TSL), except that of agrosylvicultural-perennial crops with an elevationof > 30%. The best quality of soil and environment was found at sylvopastoral-multystrata systems. Keywords: Agroforestry; erosion; soil properties; sustainable agriculture[How to Cite: Marwah S. 2012. Abstract

Halu Oleo University (UHO) Botanical Garden is one of the green open spaces that contribute to maintaining climate stability and environmental comfort in Kendari City, along with the high land use change due to increased population and city progress. The study aimed to determine the effect of land cover types on microclimate in UHO Botanical Garden and its surroundings. The research was conducted from June 2021 to January 2022. The research was conducted on three types of vegetation land cover.  The variables measured were microclimate, including light intensity, temperature, relative humidity, and temperature humidity index. Measurements were conducted in the morning, afternoon, and evening. The method used was descriptive quantitative and statistical analysis using the analysis of variance and the least significant difference (LSD) test. The results showed that the microclimatic conditions of UHO Botanical Garden in tree-dominant land cover are more comfortable and significantly different from grass-dominant and settlement-dominant, but they are not significantly different between grass-dominant and settlement-dominant. This fact indicates the importance of the conservation of tree vegetation and the need for supervision so that there is no diversion of functions into settlements to maintain the preservation and sustainability of UHO Botanical Garden as one of the green open spaces that control climate stability and environmental comfort in Kendari City.
