Abstract

Research on the ancient spiritual landscape of Mount Merbabu has received limited scholarly attention. Recent discoveries in Margomulyo (Timboa), Ngadirojo, Boyolali Regency reveal unique findings, including the surface remains of talud structures, ancient stairways, and inscription located below Prego Dalem Peak. The Mount Merbabu National Park Authority (BTN Gunung Merbabu) is responsible for securing the Ngadirojo Archaeological Site, placing within the park’s Core Zone. This condition raises an important question: How effective is the current restricted conservation policy for the site? This study aims to propose a community-based archaeological heritage management approach for its preservation. Data collection was conducted through desk research and interviews with Margomulyo (Timboa) residents. The results highlight the community’s potential and its surroundings as a supporting area for developing the Mount Merbabu Cultural Center, offering a viable solution for the conservation of the Ngadirojo Archaeological Site.

Abstract

Ancient gravestones are archaeological remains from the Islamic period that are widely distributed across the Nusantara archipelago. However, research on these objects in Central Indonesia, particularly on Lombok Island, remains limited and tends to be descriptive. Consequently, the unique ornamental variety representing the acculturation of local Sasak elements with megalithic, Hindu-Buddha, and Islamic traditions has not been extensively revealed. This paper aims to provide a preliminary review of the morphological typology and decorative motifs of ornamented ancient gravestone on Lombok Island. Utilizing literature studies and field surveys across 12 sites, this research identifies four main typologies: the Lombok-Tralaya Type, the Lombok-Bugis Type, the Lombok Type, and the Aceh Type. The analysis indicates that the Lombok-Tralaya and Lombok-Bugis types served as the precursors to the emergence of the Lombok Type, reflecting the process of cultural adaptation and the creativity of the Sasak people.

Abstract

The railway transportation system in West Coast of Sumatra (Sumatra’s Westkust Residentie) developed rapidly in accordance with coal distribution from the Ombilin Mines in Sawahlunto. The Dutch East Indies government established Staatsspoorwegen ter Sumatra's Westkust (SSS) as the main operator for railway construction, initially aimed at connecting Ombilin Mine to Teluk Bayur Port. Over time, the railway network was also utilized for transporting agricultural products from the interior regions, including Afdeeling Limapuluh Kota. Research findings indicate that Payakumbuh Station in Afdeeling Limapuluh Kota played a crucial role as a transportation hub connecting various areas. The construction of railway lines in this region had a significant economic and social impact by accelerating natural resources distribution and enhancing mass transportation. However, many historical railways remain in this area are now in a deteriorated condition. Therefore, preservation efforts are necessary to safeguard the cultural heritage of railway transportation in Sumatra’s Westkust Residentie.

Abstract

Tuanku Imam Bonjol is one of Indonesia’s national heroes who played a pivotal role in resisting colonialism in Sumatra. This resistance eventually led to his exile, along with his followers, to North Sulawesi, where he spent the remainder of his life. The Tomb of Tuanku Imam Bonjol, located in Lotta Village, Minahasa, is a significant symbol of the nation’s struggle and has been designated a Cultural Heritage Structure. However, excessive utilization without adherence to preservation principles has created several problems, including alterations to the tombstone and grave marker that have diminished the site’s authenticity and integrity. In fact, under Law Number 11 of 2010 on Cultural Heritage, any use must ensure sustainability. This research aims to formulate strategies for the preservation and utilization of the Tomb of Tuanku Imam Bonjol to ensure its sustainable protection while providing benefits for the community. The methods employed include field observations, interviews, and literature studies with a cultural heritage management approach. The findings indicate that preservation and utilization strategies should be directed toward four main aspects: (1) physical conservation and regular maintenance, (2) strengthening governance through collaboration between the government and the community, (3) public education to enhance preservation awareness, and (4) regulated utilization in line with educational, religious, and cultural functions. This study emphasizes that with appropriate and well-directed utilization, the preservation of the tomb can be maximized while generating both social and religious benefits.

Abstract

The Petirtaan Belahan Site area, located in Pasuruan Regency, East Java, is a designated cultural heritage site. Such sites are finite in number, unique, and non-renewable, thus highly vulnerable to damage which makes protecting them from the threat of disasters risk essential. This research explores on how to assess disaster risk in the Petirtaan Belahan Site area and what mitigation efforts can be undertaken. A qualitative research approach was used with data collected through field observations, map document studies, interviews, and literature reviews. The data used include Cunggrang Inscription, Kakawin Negarakertagama, environmental condition maps, scientific literature, and interview results. Findings shows that the site holds significant importance for history, education, economy, and religion, thus its existence must be preserved. The site faces low to moderate hazards, primarily triggered by rainfall conditions and land use changes. Vulnerability linked to the structures and the absence of adequate reinforcement systems, while disaster preparedness capacity has not been optimized. To address these risks, disaster mitigation efforts can be implemented through slope reinforcement with soil conservation, land management, provision of preparedness facilities, and community involvement in education and disaster response teams.
