Abstract

This research focuses on the construction of Jember city identity in the network society era. This research revealed that the construction process of Jember city identity is complex. By using Manuel Castells’ theory about territorial identity especially in network society, this paper intends to interpret Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC) as a project identity in the discourse of network society. The findings show that JFC does not only negotiate Jember city identity but also practice logic of network society. It can be seen by the way that media can change JFC as a fashion carnival into a project of Jember city identity, and then transform it to financial capital as entertaining carnaval performed in various cities. Logic of networks have the ability to transform resources to be more profitable. But, how to internalize this idea to Jember cultural space that it recognized by all citizens is still a problem. Finally, how the end of this process is, and whether world city carnival will be a new identity of Jember, will be unveiled by time.

Abstract

Basically, social stratification does not occur in a total institution like detention. If it does, it only occurs between the officers and the convicts. However, social stratification apparently occurs among female convicts in Rutan Pondok Bambu. Based on that fact, this research tried to discover the real image of social stratification in Rutan Pondok Bambu; the factors that form the social stratification, and the people who form that social stratification. By using qualitative approach, this research showed that social stratification does occur among convicts in Rutan Pondok Bambu, which, at some level, is the same with the stratification found in general society. Moreover, this research also found four dimensions of social stratification in Rutan Pondok Bambu. They are power, prestige, privilege, and skill dimensions of female convicts in that rutan. Related to that phenomenon, people who form the social stratification in that rutan are the officers as the technical executives, who indirectly affect the “culture” among female convicts in the rutan in forming the social stratification.

Abstract

In the midst of pro’s and con’s on the idea that creative economy (or production of culture) as the new engine of economic growth in a globalized world, what opportunity present for us in a developing country to be able to enter global market as a cultural producer. This paper draws from a case study of Darbotz, an Indonesian graffiti artist, whose works have been entered global market mainly through internet and gave him legitimacy as an influencer among his followers. Technology creates new space and lowers the entry barrier so that the division of sub-arena in the field of cultural production is diminishing. In the arena of cultural production there is a relation of collaboration, not only power relation that enabled actors to maximize their capital. Thus arena and sub-arena become fluid and open for any actors. This is because now eventhough arena of cultural production has its autonormativity rule, logic of capital and comodification also entering the arena. As a result, any actors who can produce distinction in their symbolic goods and exploit their social capital, can enter global market of symbolic goods.
