Abstract

The Umbilicariaceae are a family of Lichens occurring almost exclusively in temperate regions and moreover frequently growing on rocks. Nevertheless this family is represented in the tropics; it has been reportedfrom tropical America and Africa. As far as data are available they occur on rocks in the upper regions of high mountain-ranges, viz. of the Andes of Bolivia and Peru and of Pico d'Orizaba in Mexico from 10,000 feet upwards. For Africa the data are in accordance: Mount Deschen in Abyssinia (14,200 feet) and Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya (12,000 feet). For the tropics of Asia an early record exists of the appearance of a species of Umbilicaria; until today, however, this indication has not yet been confirmed and as far as I could gather, it has remained the only one. In Zollinger's "Systematisches Verzeichniss der im indischen Archi- pel gesammelten Pflanzen," page 8, 1854, one reads: "Ad rupes summi M. Ardjuno (11,000') occurrit Umbilicariae spec, sed nunc in herbario caret." In Moritzi's "Systematisches Verzeichniss der von H. Zollinger in den Jahren 1842—1844 auf Java gesammelten Pflanzen," 1845-1846, Umbilicaria is not mentioned, although Zollinger climbed Mount Ardjuno in 1844 and the material was collected probably in that year. Later workers on Zollinger's lichens did not describe an Umbilicaria from his collections either, so that we may assume it has been lost. On July 20, 1932 and some years later, on March 27, 1937, I ascended the summit of Mount Ardjuno myself and am rather confident that I collected my specimens of Umbilicaria from the same rock as Zollinger did almost a century ago. Up there, just beneath the top at about 3,300 m, there are only a few big rocks on which this species grows. The top itself is 3,339 m. In the somewhat lower surroundings of the top I could not locate any other specimen. On the summits of Mount Welirang (3,156 m), Northern Kembar (3,020 m), Southern Kembar (3,100 m), and Mount Bakal (2,980 m), which all belong to the Mount-Ardjuno complex, I failed to discover Umbilicaria, too. Abstract

This study aimed to identify and analyze ethnobotanical data on phytonym, utilization, and cultural value of plants mentioned in an Old Sundanese text. Since plants are mentioned with their vernacular names, identification was based on an exhaustive bibliographical search of the respective scientific name. A comprehensive investigation led to the identification of a total of 85 Old Sundanese phytonyms, which represented vernacular names for 79 distinct plant species. Furthermore, by considering the number of identified species from the plant-related glosses, 93 species belonging to 57 genera and 44 plant families were registered. Among these plant families, Arecaceae (12 species), Poaceae (nine species), and Fabaceae (six species) exhibited the highest number of identified species. In addition to the phytonyms, 36 phytotoponyms, which utilize vernacular phytonyms to designate settlements, hermitages, ports, mountains, and rivers were identified. It was worth noting that the majority of the plants associated with these phytotoponyms were indigenous. Meanwhile, only 13 species were traced back to the pre-Columbian exchange period during the Austronesian migration and the Indianization-Sinicization era in IndoMalayan history. The result showed that the predominantly mentioned utilization included beverage production, textile manufacturing, vessel craftsmanship, betel quid preparation, perfume creation, and incense production. Among the identified species, Areca catechu emerges as the most frequently mentioned in the text, along with Graptophyllum pictum and Cordyline fruticosa, which were also considered as possessing profound spiritual value due to association with heavenly realms. Furthermore, the text highlighted that the production of plant-based fragrance products, also referenced in the celestial domain, held significant prominence in global trade during the 15th century

Abstract

WIRIADINATA, H. 2009. A new species of Pandanus (Pandanaceae) from Bintuni Bay, West Papua. Reinwardtia 12(5): 443–446. — Pandanus bintuniensis Wiriadinata collected from Bintuni Bay, West Papua is described. It is very close to P. permicron Kanehira, but differs in wider leaf and brownish green coloured young leaf.

Abstract

Two new species of Endiandra (Lauraceae), i.e. Endiandra areolata Arifiani and Endiandra lanata Arifiani are described from New Guinea. Both species have staminal glands, but their form is different in the two species.  Moreover, E. areolata Arifiani is characterized by its prominent areolation formed by the minor venation, and E. lanata Arifiani is easily recognized by the presence of a dense curly indument on its twig, leaves, inflorescences and flowers.

Abstract

An attempt has been made at a classification of the Lauraceae, into taxa down to the rank of subgenus. The characters and their taxonomic value are discussed amply. A system of the family and keys are given. Two subfamilies, viz Lauroideae and Cassythoideae, are recognized; several new tribes, subtribes and subgenera have been described. The accepted genera, 31 in number, are surveyed, with synonyms, typification, description, and particulars. Additional notes to "The genera of Lauraceae", which appeared in 1952, are given.

Abstract

AKHRIADI,P.,HERNAWATI, PRIMALDHI, A. & HAMBALI, M. 2009. Nepenthes naga, a new species of Nepenthaceae from Bukit Barisan of Sumatra. Reinwardtia 12(5): 339 – 342. A new species of Nepenthes from North Sumatra is described as Nepenthes naga Akhriadi, Hernawati, Primaldhi & Hambali. The key characters for this species are a triangular dichotomous appendage resembling a snake's tongue inserted sub-apically on the undersurface of the lid, and the undulate lid margin.

Abstract

ADILI, A., KARTAWINATA, K., SOEDJITO, H. & SAMBAS, E. N. 2018. Tree species diversity in a pristine montane forest previously untouched by human activities in Foja Mountains, Papua, Indonesia. Reinwardtia 17(2): 133‒154. ‒‒ A study on structure and composition of the pristine montane forest previously untouched by human activities was conducted at the Foja Mountains in November 2008. We established a one-hectare plot divided into 100 subplots of 10 m × 10 m each. We enumerated all trees with DBH ≥ 10 cm which diameters were measured, heights were estimated and habitats were noted. We recorded 59 species, 42 genera and 27 families, comprising 693 trees with the total basal area (BA) of 41.35 m2/ha. The forest had lower species richness compared to those of lowland forests in Kalimantan, and Sumatra and montane forests in West Java. The Shannon-Wiener’s diversity index was 3.22. Nothofagus rubra (Importance Value, IV=47.89%) and Parinari corymbosa (IV=40.3%) were the dominant species, constituting the basis for designating the forest as the Nothofagus rubra - Parinari corymbosa association. To date, the dominance of N. rubra is unique to the Foja Mountains, as elsewhere in Papua the montane forests were dominated by N. pullei or other species. The species-area curve indicated a minimal area of 5000 m2. On the family level Fagaceae (IV=53.23%), Chrysobalanaceae (IV=40.53%) and Myristicaceae (IV=26.43%) were dominant. Verti-cally the forest consisted of four strata (A–D). In each stratum Nothofagus rubra, Platea latifolia, Parinari corymbosa and Myristica hollrungii were dominant. The diameter class distribution of Nothofagus rubra, Parinari corymbosa and Platea latifolia led us to assume that these species were regenerating well.

Abstract

A preliminary taxonomic study was carried out on seven Acanthaceae species namely as Andrographis paniculata,Pseuderanthemum graciliflorum,P. carruthersii, Asystasia gangetica ssp. micrantha, Ruellia repens, Justicia comata and J. betonica.The study was undertaken to investigate the morphology of trichomes present on the surfaces of flower petal. The variations found in this study are in their types and density. Based on observation, two forms of trichomes are present in all species studies which are glandular and non-glandular trichomes. There are seven types of trichomes found in this study. Trichomes types are shown to have systematic significance that can be used to differentiate and identify certain Acanthaceae species studied.
