Abstract

We studied  the floristic compostion and structure of mangrove forests and mangrove species distribution at the Raja Ampat Regency, West Papua  We sampled the forests using (10x10 m) quadrats to record trees and saplings  laid out contiguously along 9 transects of 60 – 450 m long,  stretching perpendicularly from the coastlines or riverbanks to the landward borders. Seedlings were sampled using a 1x1 m subplot nested in each quadrat.  The transects were established on the islands of  Batanta (6), Salawati  (2). and Waigeo (1).  Within quadrats and transects we recorded 17 mangrove species of trees with density of 768 stems/ha and basal area of  37.82 m2/ha and tree height of  10 – 30 m.   Two species possessed  the highest importance value  (IV) , frequency, density and basal area  i.e. Rhizophora apiculata (IV=168.06 %) and  Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (IV=67.18).  They also showed the highest similarity in their distribution,  indicating highest degree of association.  The mangrove at Raja Ampat may, therefore,  be designated as the Rhizophora apiculata-Bruguiera gymnorrhiza Association. Other species with highest degree of distributional similarities but with low densities, basal areas and importance values were Barringtonia racemosa, Excoecaria agallocha, Hibiscus tiliaceus, Inocarpus fagifera,  Lumnitzera littorea and Sterculia shillinglawii,  of which four of them are not  true mangrove species, usually growing on less saline and more solid soils. The floristic composition of the transects in the three islands showed relatively high similarities of about 70 % and at higher similarities the transects in Batanta Island formed four groups, Salawati Island two groups and Waigeo Island one group.The Bray-Curtis polar ordination  resulted in four groups  of transects, which were related to the habitat  conditions and the length of the transects. Species diversity in the islands was very low, where the  Shannon diversity index  ranged  from  0.19 to 0.64 giving  the average  of 0.42. Rhizophora apiculata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza  were gregenerating well and in the future they will remain dominant.  The mangrove forests of the Raja Ampat Islands by any means should be maintained as green belts and  protected from all kinds of destruction and should be made into conservation areas in order to sustain its ability to provide ecological services  and non-destructive economic benefits.

Abstract

Reinwardtia 16(1): 25 - 30. - One new species of Catanthera and four of Medinilla (Melastomataceae) from Halmahera, Moluccas, Indonesia, are described. One also occurs in Morotai. A new name was needed for M. intermedia H. Perrier (1932), non Blume (1831), from Madagascar.

Abstract

Single ascospore isolates of Sarawakus succisus Rifai produce a Trichoderma like anamorph. The hypocreaceous nature of the genus Savawakus Lloyd is therefore indicated. A detailed illustrated description of this conidial state is presented.

Abstract

Using the Braun-Blanquet and ordination techniques, nine dry-grass community types were recognized on Oahu,seven of which were dominated by exotic grasses and two by native grasses, Hctcrnpogna eontortus and Erarjrostis variabilis.These community types occured in summer-drought, summer-dry and humid climates.The distribution of certain community types could be correlated directly with rainfall and soil pH. In the summer-drought climate the occurrence of the community types was related to topography,wind exposure, rockiness of the land surface and stoniness of the soil.The nine community types were not related to the established soil series, organic matter content and watsr retaining' capacity of the surface soils.Three distinct soil-water regimes were recognized in five community types: drought, dry and wet types.Seasonal variations in soil-water content were correlated closely with the rainfall pattern.The introduction and spread of exotic species resulted in a gradual disappearance of the native grass communities in the summer-drought zone. In the summer-dry zone, Grevillea robiista. trees and Meliiiis minutiflora grass mats were invading the Rhynchelytrum repens community. Artdropogon virginiciis, introduced in 1932, formed a wide spread herbaceous community in the humid zone. In some places, this community was invaded by Dicranopteris linearis fern mats and trees of Acacia, koa or Metrosideros collina. Fire in both the summer-dry and humid zones maintained and extended the grass communities.

Detailed morphological and anatomical investigations of Cyperus hyalinus Vahl were undertaken and based on the data accumulated Queenslandiella Domin was accorded a new status as Cyperus L. subgen. Queenslandiella (Domin) Govindarajalu on a par with subgen. Cyperus, Mariscus, Kyllinga and Pycreus of the genus Cyperus.

Abstract

1. In connection with the first record from Malaysia (Atjeh, North Sumatra)of a species of Schoepfia (Olacaceae), viz. S. fragrans Wall, in Roxb., some notes on the genus are given, including a key to the species of section Schoepfiopsis (emended) and to the two Indian species of Schoepfia.The specimens of the Kew and Leyden Herbaria of these two species are listed. The name Schoepfia ffriffithii Tiegh. is validly published in the present paper, if this was not done before. 2. Smilax pygmaea Merr. (Liliaceae) is recorded from Atjeh, Sumatra. 3. The first indigenous species of Mivmlus (Scrophulariaceae), M. tenellus Bunge,is recorded for Malaysia from Atjeh, Sumatra. 4. A new species of Macadamia (Proteaceae) is described from Celebes: Macadamia hildebrandii Van Steenis. It belongs to the same genus as the common Australian bush nut, M. ternifolia, with edible seeds. 5. Some information, additional to a previous paper on Biophytum (Oxalidaceae)in Malaysia, is given. 6. Some records of plants new to Mount Pangrango, West Java, are mentioned. 7. The recent introduction and the present distribution in Malaysia of the weed Eupatorium odoratum L. (Compositae) is discussed. 8. Some additional records of the liana Hollrungia aurantioides K. Schum.(Passifloraceae) from New Guinea and from outside this island (Ternate, Moluccas)are published.
