In this revision of the Malaysian species of the genus Gaultheria Kalm ex L. 24 species and 9 varieties resp. forms are recognized. Among the new taxa described are 9 species and 1 variety. The localities of the revised material are given in detail. An index to specimens is added.

Abstract

An attempt has been made at a classification of the Lauraceae, into taxa down to the rank of subgenus. The characters and their taxonomic value are discussed amply. A system of the family and keys are given. Two subfamilies, viz Lauroideae and Cassythoideae, are recognized; several new tribes, subtribes and subgenera have been described. The accepted genera, 31 in number, are surveyed, with synonyms, typification, description, and particulars. Additional notes to "The genera of Lauraceae", which appeared in 1952, are given.

Abstract

A new subdivision is given of the fern family Gleicheniaceae. The genus Platyzoma R. Br is excluded from the family. The genus Stromatopteris from New Caledonia is arranged in a distinct subfamily. In the remainder of the family, subfamily Gleichenioideae, two genera are recognized, Gleichenia (with subgenera Diplopterygium, Gleichenia, and Mertensia) and Dicranopteris (with subgenera Acropterygium and Dicranopteris) . The problem of subdividing the family is discussed with reference to former treatments and to new data, and a conspectus of the new system, with synonymy and key to the genera and subgenera, is given. A number of new species, new varieties, and new combinations is made both in Gleichenia and Dicranopteris.

Abstract

Described and figured are Staurastrum freemanii West & West and var. triquetrum West & West, with two new varieties, var. nudiceps and var. evolutum; also three new i'ormae, var. nudiceps fa. biradiatum, var. triquetrum fa. trispinatum, and var. evolutum fa. trispinatuin. In St. salterns Josh, the specific form was not found, but two new varieties are named, var. polycharax and var. sumatranum, with a fa. divergens of the latter; also two new formae of the species, St. saltans fa. kalimantanum and fa. javanicum. In St. subsaltans West & West, var. indonesianum and fa. diver gens are named as new. Correction. Because of pre-emption the name Euastrum latwm sp. nov. Krieg. & Scott (1957) is changed to E. neolatum Krieg. & Scott.

Abstract

Ficus displays many problems fundamental to the distribution of tropical plants. As a natural g-enus, one of the most derived of its family, it shows that these problems refer not to the origin of the genus or of its major groups, but to the subsequent course of sectional evolution. Detailed morphological revision must, therefore, precede phytogeography. The facts, here epitomised, are based on monographic revision of the species of Asia and Australasia, and have not been called from other writings. Seed-dispersal in Ficus must be accompanied by dispersal of the pollinating wasp. It seems true, as Beccari pointed out, that the large banyans have an advantage in this respect over small trees impeded by the dense forest.Two subgenera, Pharmaeosycea and Urostigma, suggest a southern migration, but the third subgenus Ficus suggests a northern origin and dispersal. Pharmaeosycea, hitherto regarded as American, has 46 species in Asia and Australasia, and it comprises most of the fig-flora of New Caledonia (26 species in all, 20 endemic species of Pharmaeosycea). Ficus prolixa (Polynesia) seems related to sect. Americana of Urostigma. The F. elastica group (Queensland, Papua, Solomon Islands) seems related to the African sect. Bibracteata of Urostigma. The F, benghalensis group parallels the distribution of the Dipterocarpaceae, but does not occur in Africa.

Abstract

The genus Durio comprises, as far as known, 27 species. The centre of distribution is Borneo with 19 species, followed by Malaya with 11 species and Sumatra with 7 species. It is likely, when Sumatra will be better explored, that this island will prove to have many more species. An exclave of the area of distribution is found in Burma, where one endemic species occurs. The common Durio zibethinus Murr. probably originated in Borneo or in Sumatra. It is now widely cultivated outside of its former area and in many places it has become spontaneous. The genus Durio is subdivided into two subgenera: Durio and Boschia Kosterm. & Soegeng, according to the way of dehiscence of the anthers (with a longitudinal slit in the former, with an apical pore in the latter). A key to the species is proposed. A map is added, to show distribution and endemism. Each species is amply described and provided with a drawing . Economic and ecological data are given.

Abstract

Cullenia excelsa Wight in Pearson & Brown, Commerc. Timb. India 1: 141, t. 51 1932; Foxworthy in Philipp. J. Sci. Bot. 4: 500. 1909; Trotter, Common Comm. Timb. India 65. 1901. Foxworthy in Philip. J. Sci. Bot. 4: 500. 1909. Fruit collected in January 1958 from the tree cultivated in the Bogor. Botanical Garden (no. XVI H. 13) enables me to correct and emendate the description published in "Communication of the Forest Research Institute, Bogor" no. 51 (1956) and in Reinwardtia 4 : 69.1956. The ripe fruit are dirty green outside, they open on the branches and the seed falls out immediately. Each fruit contains from one to 5 seeds, the common number, however, is one, the others do not develop; the fruit becomes pseudo-unilocular. The chestnut brown seeds are completely enveloped by a lightbrown, somewhat glassy, slightly juicy and hardly sweet, furrowed aril of 2-4 mm thickness; the apical part of the aril is more or less fimbriate. 1. The genera Heritiera Ait., Argyrodendron F.v.M. and Tarrietia Bl. are united. 2. The genus comprises 29 species ranging from India, Malaysia, New Guinea and the Pacific region to tropical Australia (2 species, of which one extends to Celebes) and 2 species in tropical Africa. 3. The following ten species are described here for the first time: Heritiera arafurensis Kosterm., H. aurea Kosterm., H. burmensis Kosterm., H. catappa Kosterm,H. cordata Kosterm., H. globosa Kosterm., H. macroptera Kosterm., H. novoguineensis Kosterm, H. percoriacea Kosterm., and H. pterospermoides Kosterm. 4.
