Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of racial discrimination in the film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) through discourse analysis, focusing on how dialogues reflect systemic and everyday prejudices. The research employs a qualitative approach to examine instances of discrimination in the film’s narrative, particularly in the interactions between humans and the Fey. The findings reveal two primary forms of racial discrimination: chronic discrimination, which manifests through systemic oppression and historical marginalization, and daily discrimination, which appears in subtle prejudices and microaggressions. Queen Ingrith’s portrayal as a figure perpetuating anti-Fey sentiments underscores real-world parallels of racial bias, reinforcing stereotypes and societal divisions. The study highlights the film’s role in depicting discrimination as both a source of conflict and a reflection of broader societal tensions. By analysing these themes, this research contributes to discussions on racial representation in media and its implications for audiences’ perceptions of discrimination.

Abstract

This study presents a semiotic interpretation of Blinding Lights by The Weeknd, focusing on how the song constructs symbolic representations of emotional states such as loss, loneliness, devotion, and hope. Using the theoretical frameworks of Saussure, Peirce, Barthes, and Yuwana, the analysis reveals the way linguistic and symbolic signs, such as light, darkness, silence, and urban imagery, encode emotional depth within the narrative of romantic longing. The study identifies how these signs interact to form a coherent structure of meaning that resonates with the universal experience of separation and devotion. The findings show that popular music, far beyond entertainment, serves as a space of cultural signification, conveying complex affective messages through semiotic constructs. This research contributes to the growing field of music semiotics and affirms the relevance of contemporary song lyrics as legitimate texts for scholarly analysis.

Abstract

Semantics is the study of meaning in language, including how the meanings of words and expressions relate to each other in various forms of discourse. One key branch of semantics is speech act theory, which examines how utterances function as actions. According to Austin, there are three types of speech acts: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. This study focuses on illocutionary acts, which are intended actions performed by the speaker through speech. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method and analyzes the utterances of Natasha Romanoff in the movie Black Widow. The study aims to identify the types and purposes of illocutionary acts used by the main character. Based on Searle’s (1979) classification, illocutionary acts are divided into five types: (1) assertive, (2) directive, (3) commissive, (4) expressive, and (5) declarative. The results show that four types of illocutionary acts are found in Black Widow. In the assertive category, there are six data points used for stating, claiming, and predicting. In the directive category, there is one data point used for ordering. In the commissive category, four data points are found, used for threatening and refraining someone from doing something. Finally, in the expressive category, there are two data points used for condoling and complimenting. These findings reveal how language is used performatively in film to convey emotion, intent, and psychological depth.

Abstract

This study analyzes the contextual meaning in the lyrics of the song “Nonsense” by Sabrina Carpenter. The findings reveal that the lyrics convey meanings both directly and indirectly, with several expressions relying heavily on context for accurate interpretation. Through semantic analysis, the study demonstrates how figurative language, playful innuendos, and situational references in the song reflect the songwriter’s intent and emotional nuance. The results highlight the significance of context in interpreting song lyrics and contribute to a deeper understanding of how meaning is constructed in contemporary pop music.
