Abstract

This study explores the orthographic characteristics of Rasm Uthmānī, the codified Qur’anic script established during the caliphate of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, focusing on three core features: al-Badl (letter substitution), Ahkām al-Hamzāt (rules governing the glottal stop), and al-Faṣl wa al-Waṣl (word separation and conjunction). Using a descriptive-linguistic and historical-contextual approach, the research analyzes how these features differ from modern Arabic orthography and how they accommodate phonetic diversity, syntactic fluidity, and theological nuance. The findings reveal that the Uthmānī script’s allowance for phonological variation and orthographic flexibility facilitates the preservation of multiple qirāʾāt without compromising semantic clarity. This integrative system enables the faithful transmission of the Qur’an’s oral and written dimensions across generations. The study concludes that Rasm Uthmānī serves not only as a static textual representation but also as a dynamic tool for interpreting the linguistic and theological foundations of the Qur’anic message. Its continued relevance in pedagogical and scholarly contexts underscores the enduring significance of early Islamic textual engineering.

Abstract

The Prophetic Sunnah occupies a central position in Islamic jurisprudence as a source of divine guidance and ethical instruction. This study critically examines the dual nature of the Sunnah, exploring whether it is entirely divinely revealed or if it includes elements of the Prophet Muhammad’s independent reasoning (ijtihād). Employing a qualitative, library-based approach grounded in usul al-fiqh, the research analyzes key Hadiths through historical and functional lenses. It distinguishes between the Prophet’s legislative actions (Sunnah tashrīʿiyyah) and those shaped by his socio-political roles (Sunnah ghayr tashrīʿiyyah), demonstrating how contextual interpretation reveals the adaptive dimensions of prophetic practice. The methodology integrates textual analysis, juristic classification, and contextual reading of Hadith, enabling a clearer understanding of how the Prophet’s roles—as messenger, leader, judge, and individual—influence the legal authority of his sayings and actions. Findings highlight that while certain Prophetic acts were divinely mandated and universally binding, others were contingent on specific historical contexts and were open to divine correction or refinement. This study argues that contextual interpretation of Hadith, coupled with the differentiation between universal and particular Sunnah, strengthens the responsiveness of Islamic law in contemporary pluralistic societies. By aligning legal rulings with the overarching objectives of Sharia (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah), such as justice, welfare, and public interest, scholars can ensure the relevance and vitality of Islamic legal thought in addressing modern challenges. Ultimately, this approach preserves the integrity of the Sunnah while promoting a jurisprudence that is both rooted and reform-oriented

Abstract

This study examines the contribution of Fādil Al-Samarra’i to modern Qur’anic exegesis through his application of Manhaj Bayani, a rhetorical-linguistic method that highlights the Qur’an’s stylistic and semantic intricacies. Beginning with the theoretical framework developed by scholars such as Amin al-Khuli and Bint al-Shati’, Al-Samarra’i extends the approach by integrating philological analysis, rhetorical devices, and contextual sensitivity into his interpretive model. Methodologically, this research adopts a qualitative-textual analysis of Al-Samarra’i’s work Ala Tariq al-Tafsir al-Bayani, drawing on both primary and secondary sources. The analysis focuses on features such as contextual reading (siyāq), semantic differentiation (e.g., aʿṭā vs ātā), and structural cohesion through literary devices like repetition and parallelism. The findings reveal that Al-Samarra’i’s method effectively uncovers layered meanings and theological implications embedded in the Qur’anic language. While his approach excels in rhetorically rich texts, its applicability to more straightforward or legalistic verses may be limited. Nonetheless, his work significantly revitalizes classical tafsir by aligning it with the demands of contemporary discourse. The study affirms the continued importance of linguistic and rhetorical analysis as essential tools for understanding the Qur’an’s spiritual, moral, and communicative depth.

Abstract

This paper applies Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd’s contextual hermeneutics to four Qur’anic verses often invoked in Islamic political discourse: QS. al-Nisā’ [4]:59, QS. al-Baqarah [2]:30, QS. al-Shūrā [42]:38, and QS. al-Mā’idah [5]:44. Traditional interpretations have frequently endorsed literal and authoritarian readings, framing obedience, governance, and divine law as rigid imperatives. By engaging Abu Zayd’s concept of tārīkhiyyat al-dalālah (the historicity of meaning), this study reinterprets these verses through their socio-historical contexts and ethical substance. The analysis finds that each verse contains dynamic ethical imperatives: conditional obedience, ecological stewardship, participatory governance, and values-based jurisprudence. Abu Zayd’s methodology reframes Islamic political thought as a field grounded not in legal absolutism, but in moral dialogue. This approach supports a pluralistic, just, and context-sensitive reading of the Qur’an, offering new possibilities for integrating Islamic teachings with contemporary values of justice, human rights, and ethical leadership

Abstract

This article explores Muhammad Asad’s interpretation of al-Islām through a critical analysis of his exegetical work The Message of the Qur’an. The study aims to examine how Asad departs from traditional interpretations by redefining al-Islām not as a rigid ideological construct but as a moral and spiritual disposition grounded in surrender to God. The research employs a descriptive-analytical method using linguistic-semantic analysis and historical-contextual approaches. Methodologically, the study focuses on Asad’s interpretation of key Qur’anic terms such as Islam, Muslim, and salām, analyzing their semantic fields and ethical implications. The results demonstrate that Asad views Islam as a universal path grounded in moral responsibility, extending beyond confessional boundaries. He contrasts with classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Fakhruddin Razi by emphasizing ethical universality over exclusivist dogma. The findings suggest that Asad’s inclusive approach contributes to religious pluralism, interfaith dialogue, and the redefinition of Muslim identity in multicultural societies. His interpretation reclaims the Qur’an’s original moral intent, offering a framework that integrates Islamic teachings with contemporary values. Ultimately, the study concludes that Asad’s hermeneutics position Islam as a dynamic ethical system capable of addressing modern social realities while remaining faithful to its spiritual core.
