Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the implementation of multimedia in teaching English to young learners at SD Kristen Manahan Surakarta in the academic year 2016/ 2017 involving the teaching and learning activities, the learner’s role, the teacher’s role and the role of instructional materials. Besides that, the strength and weakness of using multimedia to teach English to young learners .were also described. It was a case study conducted at second to fifth grade students of SD Kristen Manahan, Surakarta and the teacher. This study was conducted in classes 2A, 2B, 2C, 3A, 3B, 3C, 4A, 4B, 4C, 5A and 5B.The investigation concerned in the implementation of multimedia in teaching English to young learners. The techniques of collecting the data were interview, observation and documentation. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that multimedia were used not only to teach English but also to assess the students’ achievement. The teacher facilitated the students’ needs, created and operated the multimedia, monitored the class activities, managed the class and became a partner for her students. The students, however, were passive in the implementation of multimedia. Concerning the strength and weakness of implementation of multimedia in teaching English to young learners at SD Kristen Manahan, the result showed five strong points. It helped students in understanding materials better, brought fun to the students, the interest of student was increased, it helped the teacher in preparing the teaching and learning process and cost of the materials was reduced. However, it had five weaknesses. It took time for preparing multimedia devices; not all the multimedia devices were ready to use; the boredom of students, electricity matters, the difficulties to find the proper source. Abstract

The objectives of the research are : to find out whether Chain Story Games can improve students’ speaking skill on narrative text and to find out how far Chain Story Games can improve students’ speaking skill at the eighth grade students especially in class VIII-A of SMP N 11 Surakarta in 2018/2019 Academic Year. The research used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) and the subject of the research was the students of eighth grade especially in class VIII-A. In implementation of the teaching and learning process, the researcher divided the research into two cycles. Cycle 1 had 2 meetings and cycle 2 had 2 meetings with post test in every cycle. Every cycle consisted of 4procedures:planning, action, observation, and reflection. For Classroom Action Research the researcher devided into two techniques, there were test consisted of oral test and non-test consisted of observation, interview, and documentation. In analyzed the data, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data consisted of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. In the quantitative data the researcher used t-test formula to conducted Pre-Test, Post-Test 1 and Post Test 2. Based on the result of this research, the mean score showed that in cycle 1 some students were still less on grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and pronunciation. Therefore, Cycle 2 showed that the used of Chain Story Gameswas good to improve the students’ speaking skill. The findings was supported by the qualitative data of students’ responses in the field note, interview and documentation. The quantitative data improve from pre-test to post test 1 and post test 2. The students’ mean score in pretest was 48.13, post test 1 was 61.50 and post test 2 was 78.13. The result of post-test 1 by using t-test was 10.17and post-test 2 by using t-test was 9.90. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that “The use of Chain Story Games can improve students’ speaking skill on narrative text at the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Surakarta in 2018/2019 academic year especially in class VIII-A ”. Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the process of teaching reading in SMP Advent 2018/2019 and to describe the problem in teaching reading at SMP Advent in the Academic Year of 2018/2019.This research was conducted at the seventh grade students of SMP Advent Surakarta in the Academic Year of 2018/ 2019. The researcher used Descriptive Qualitative Research which was conducted February 2019 at the seventh grade. The research was conducted at seventh grade of SMP Advent Surakarta the researcher found some problems during the teaching reading processed with three meetings of learning process. In analyzing the data, the researcher used qualitative data. To collect the qualitative data, the researcher used interview, observation, and documentation.Based on the result of the study, Teaching reading at the seventh grade students of SMP Advent Surakarta is quite good. The teacher could handle class well. It contain be known by the class situation. The students could be motivated by the teacher. But, teaching reading at the seventh grade students of SMP Advent Surakarta still had some problems of teaching learning process showed by still used the old methods and stuck on old text. From the teacher, she had limitation in method that she used. The teacher did not used special method while teaching reading. For the students, they could not used time wisely in reading activity. Some of students prefer to talk with their friends than doing reading activity. The technique of data analysis are data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Abstract

This research aimed to improve students’ reading comprehension using media reder’s digest magazine at SMPN 7 Surakarta class VIII C. This method was Classroom Action Research. In this study, there were two cycles and ended by post tests. In each cycle there were four procedures, plan, act, observe and reflect. In collecting the data it,consists of tests and non-tests.The results of the implementation of Reader’s Digest Magazine could be shown by the mean score of pre test, post test 1 and post test 2. The mean score of pre test was 56.42, in post test 1 was 78.03. and post test 2 was 81.29. In the use of Reader’s Digest Magazine has made the students felt happy, active, relaxed, more confident, and increases students' learning motivation in the teaching and learning process. Abstract

The objectives of the research are : to find out whether Active Scaffolding can enhance students’ writing skill on narrative text and to find out the implementation of Active Scaffolding in teaching and learning writing at the eight grade students of SMPN 27 Surakarta in 2018/2019 Academic Year especially in class VIII C. The research was carried out at SMPN 27 Surakarta. It was conducted from August up to september 2018 The subject of the research was the students of eight grade. In implementation of the teaching and learning process, the researcher divided the research into two cycle. Cycle 1 into 2 meeting and cycle 2 into 2 meeting with post test in every cycle. Every cycle consists of 3 steps; exploration, elaboration, and confirmation. In collecting data, the reseacher used qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data consisted of observation, interview and questionare. The quantitative data consisted in Pre-Test, Post-Test 1 and Post Test 2. The result of Cycle 1 showed that some students still less on grammar, and vocabulary. Therefore, Cycle II showed that the use of Active Scaffolding from content, organization, language use, vocabulary and mechanic are effective to enhance the students’ writing skill. The findings are supported by the qualitative data of students’ responses in field note, interview and questionare. The quantitative data enhanced from pre-test to post test 1 and post test 2. The students’ mean score in pretest was 43,20, post test 1 was 60,00 and post test 2 was 70,74. Based on the result of the data from pre test, post test and questionare, it could be concluded that “The use of Active Scaffolding can improve students’ writing skill on narrative text, and how far the implementation of Active Scaffolding in teaching and learning writing at the eight grade students of SMPN 27 Surakarta in 2018/2019 academic year especially in class VIII C ”. Abstract

Speaking is one of productive skills in which it used to comunicate with others. Speaking is so much a part of daily life that we take it for granted. Average person produces tens of thousands of words in a day. The aims of this study were to know whether Rosetta Stone software can improve students speaking skill and to show the class condition during this softwrare was implemented in teaching learning process for second grade students of SMP N 7 Surakarta 2017/2018 Academic Year. The method of the study was classroom action research and it is implemented on August 2018. To collect the data, there are 2 cycles. Each cycle used the test (oral test) and also non-test (observation, interview and documentation) .While, to analyze the data was used t-test. The result of this study showed that the implementation of Rosetta Stone software was succsessfully improve students’ speaking skill. pre-test and post test 1 was 58,12. meanwhile in the post-test 1 of cycle, it increased to 69. In the post-test 2 of cycle 2 had increased to the average value 76,12. To try the significance of teaching learning speaking result in first and second cycle, it was used t-test. The result was compared with the d.b= n- 1 30-1= 29, which showed in the table values, the table significance 5% was 2,045 and significance 1% was 2,756 the t-test score between pre-test and post-test 1 increased. It could be seen from the table values (2,045< 11,12 > 2,756), while t-test between post-test 1 and 2 also in creased. It can be seen from the table value (2,045< 7,06 > 2,756). It can be conclude that Rosetta Stone software was appropriate to improve students’ speaking skill in teaching learning process. Keywords: Rosetta Stone Software, Action Reseach, Speaking Skill.

Abstract

The aims in this study were (1) to describe the representative acts employed by the character’s in City of Ember movie. And (2) To describe the Locution, Illocution, and Perlocution of the representative acts uttered by the character’s City of Ember movie. The method of the study was descriptive qualitative method, by using this method researcher can classifying and analyzing the utterance on City of Ember movie. The data was collected through primary data and secondary data. In collecting data, the primary data was used from quota conversation in the script of City of Ember movie and the secondary data was used to complete and support the primary data were taken from books and articles. The result of this study shows that Representative was expressed in the form of informing, stating, refusing, concluding, and Agreeing. On this research representative only found five types they were stating (28, 5%), informing (28, 5%), refusing(23,8%), agreeing(9,5%), concluding(9,5%). Based on Searle’s category, researcher also find those utterance into Locutionary act, Illocutionary act, and the last Perlocutionary act. In this research the researcher hope that when studying about speech act, people can understand and decrease misunderstanding about speaker’s meaning. Abstract

The objectives of this research are: (1) to find out whether Frame Routine Strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension in class VIII B of SMP Negeri 16 Surakarta in 2018/2019 Academic year, and (2) to describe the class condition when Frame Routine Strategy is implemented in teaching learning process in class VIII B of SMP Negeri 16 Surakarta in 2018/2019 Academic Year. This research used a Classroom Action Research which was implemented in two cycles by using Frame Routine Strategy. The research was conducted in class VIII B of SMP Negeri 16 Surakarta. The object of this research was students on class VIII B, the total number of the students was 32 students which consisted of 14 males and 18 females. Each cycle consisted of two meetings which contained of some activities: identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observing, reflecting and revising the plan. In collecting the data, the researcher used interview, observation, documentation, and test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative data analyses. Based on the result of this research, the mean score of the students in pre-test was 49,63, meanwhile in the post- test 1 of cycle , it increased to 61,18. In the post-test 2 of cycle 2, it increased to the average value 77,69. It showed that the mean score of post-test 1 was still lower than the minimum score (73). Meanwhile, the mean score of post-test 2 was higher than the minimum score (73). Besides, in class condition, the students were motivated and fun in reading comprehension using Frame Routine Strategy. Based on the research finding, it could be concluded that the Frame Routine Strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension. Further, this strategy is suggested to be used by the teachers in teaching and learning reading in order to be more creative and innovative. The students are suggested to apply it, so that it can help them to be more confidence and fun in learning English. The other resercher who will conduct the same strategy can learn and explore more creative on how this strategy improves students’ reading comprehension.
