STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION TOWARDS THE USE OF PICTURES IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT  Habibi Nur HidayantoThe State Islamic Institute Of Surakartahbbnh10@gmail.com Abstract: The aims of this study are to find out whether the use of picture can improve the students’ writing skill on descriptive text and to find out the implementation of picture as a media in teaching writing on descriptive text. The study was carried out at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Gemolong Sragen. The sample of the research was the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Gemolong Sragen. The samples were 40 students. The action research design was carried out collaboratively with senior English teachers in observing the implementation of picture as a media in teaching writing on descriptive text. This research consisted of three cycles. Every cycle consisted of three meetings. The results of the study showed that the use of picture as a media can improved the students' writing skills and the class condition became more enjoyable. Key words: students’ perception, media, picture, descriptive text, CAR

Abstract

This research focuses on civilization clash taking place in Baqubah, Iraq during War on Terror campaign portrayed by Buried, a film released in 2010. It is conducted under American Transnational Studies frame, and uses socio-cultural and historical approach to construct the thesis. It considers research from Rwaida Gharib (2009) and Jasna Poljak Rehlicki (2015) as the foundation to continue the discussion of civilization clash in Baqubah, Iraq. It employs Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilization theory to determine factors causing civilization clash to occur. Its objective is to describe the representation of Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilization in Buried. This research discovers that Buried depicts Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilization: difference among civilization, interaction among civilization, economic modernization, the growth of civilization-consciousness, and complexity of cultural characteristics and differences.   Keywords:  clash of civilization, war on terror, American transnational studies

Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to find out whether Graphic Organizers can improve writing skill of Eight Grade students of SMP N 4 Sukoharjo in 2017/ 2018Academic Year (2) to find out how is the class condition when Graphic Organizers is implemented in writing class at Eight Grade of SMP N 4 Sukoharjo in 2017/2018Academic Year. This researcher held from January 2017 to January 2018. In this research, the researcher conducted two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings and one posttest. Each cycle had four steps: planning, action, observation, and reflection.  In  collecting  the  data,  the  researcher  used  observation,  interview, document, and test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The researcher conducted pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2 to get raw data. After the researcher had the data, the researcher calculated the mean score from the pretest, post test1 and posttest 2. The researcher also calculated t-value using t-test. The result of this research shows that there was improvement in students’ writing  skill.  Based  on  the  mean  score  of  the  students  in  pre-test  was  19,34, meanwhile in the post-test I of cycle I, it increased to 60,5. In the post-test II of cycle II the value had increased to average value 72,9. Besides, the class condition was better where the students’ enthusiasm was increased to learn English. The students were able to transform their idea into written form using graphic organizers. Based on the  result  above,  it  can  be  concluded  that  (1)  Graphic  Organizers  strategy  can improve  students’  writing  skill  in  class  VIII  G  of  SMP  Negeri  4  Sukoharjo  in2017/2018   Academic   Year   and   (2)   class   condition   was   better   after   the implementation of Graphic Organizers strategy. Graphic Organizers strategy can be new way in teaching learning to improve students’ writing skill.

Abstract

Reading is not only read activity, but also understanding meaning of the word in the text. Reading is one of four skill in English. Reading skill is one skills that should be mastered by students in all levels of schools. In this study there are two objectives: To find out whether Concept Sort Strategy can improve reading skill and to identify how the condition when Concept Sort Strategy (CSS) is implemented  in Reading  class at  the Eight  Grade of SMP  N 4 Sukoharjo  in Academic Year 2017/2018. Concept Sort Strategy is strategy to introduce and organize concepts and examples to introduce the students examples of sorting the word of the material in their class directly. The researcher used Classroom Action Research which was carried out from November 2017 to February 2018. The researcher used observation, interview, document, and test to colleting the data. The  result  of  this  research  showed  that  there  was  improvement  in  students’ Reading skill. Based on the mean score of the students in pre-test was 29.65, in post-test 1  the mean score increased to 61, in the post-test 2 the mean score was increased to 72.78. The result from pre-test and post-test 1 was significance which 2.040 < 11.9 > 2.744. Then t-test result between post-test 1 and post-test 2 were 2.040 < 6.5 > 2.744. According to the result, it can be concluded that Concept Sort Strategy was appropriate to improve the students’ reading skill. Besides that, the condition of the class were more active and the students more interest with the strategy. Keywords: Reading Skill, Concept Sort Strategy (CSS), Classroom ActionResearch

Abstract

The article was based on a research that concerned in improving students’ skill in writing descriptive texts using Brainstorming Technique. The objectives were: 1) To find out whether the use of Brainstorming Technique can improved the writing skill in descriptive texts of tenth grade students of SMK Plus Bhakti Oetama Gondangrejo in the academic year of 2017/2018, and   2)   To   d e s c r i b e   t h e   c l a s s   c o n d i t i o n   w h e n   brainstorming  technique  were implemented in writing skill in descriptive texts of tenth grade students of SMK Plus Bhakti Oetama Gondangrejo in the academic year of 2017/2018. The researcher wa s  conducted in c l a s s  X  wh i c h  c o n s i s t e d  o f  3 0  f e ma l e  s t u d e n t s  from August to September 2017. This Classroom  Action  Research  (CAR)  consisted  of  2  cycles.  Each  cycle  consisted  of  two meetings in 80 minutes for each meeting. The data were collected through test and non-test. The tests consisted of pre-test and post-tests. While, non-tests consisted of observation, interview, field notes and documentation.  Furthermore,  the  researcher  used  qualitative  and quantitative   data analysis to analyze the data. The result of this research showed that Brainstorming Technique could improve the students’ skill  in writing descriptive  texts  at  the tenth  grade  students  especially  class  X  of  SMK Plus Bhakti Oetama Gondangrejo.  The improvement could be seen from the result of the test. The mean score of pre-test was 4.80, post-test 1 was 6.93, and post-test 2 was 7.68. Moreover, the result of t-test was 12.321 in cycle 1 and 3.425 in cycle 2. It meant that there was improvement in students’ skill in writing descriptive texts. Key  words:  Writing  Skill;  Descriptive  Texts;  Brainstorming Technique; Classroom ActionResearch

Abstract

Reading is an important skill to help people learn from human knowledge and experience. Through reading, knowledge has greatly contributed to the growth of mankind. The aims of the study are as the following: (1) To identify whether the use of Printed Mass Media can improve the students’ reading skill at the Eight Grade of SMP DARUL FIKR Andong in 2017/2018 Academic Year., (2) To describe what happens when Printed Mass Media is applied at Eight Grade of SMP DARUL FIKR Andong in 2017/2018 Academic Year. The research was carried out at SMP Darul Fikr Andong. It was conducted from September until October 2017. The subject of the research was grade VIII-A students of SMP Darul Fikr Andong in 2017/2018 academic year. The research was carried out in 2 cycles of action. Each cycle consisted of: planning the action, implementing the action, observing, reflecting, and revising the plan. In collecting the data, the researcher used tests and non-tests. The tests consisted of pre-test and post-test. While non-tests were divided into three types: they were observation, interview and field note. To analyze the data, the researcher used qualitative  and  quantitative  data.  The  qualitative  data,  he  used  Strauss  and  Glesser  in Moleong analysis that consisted of data reduction, categorization, synthesis, stating action hypothesis.To  analyze  the  quantitative  data,  the  researcher  used  mean  score  and  t -test formula. The results of the research show that  printed  mass  media can  improve students’ reading skill of the students at grade VIII-A of SMP DarulFikrAndong. The improvements can be seen from the students’ reading achievements. Themean score results was pre-test (49.1), post-test 1 (51. 1), and post-test 2 (74. 4). Then t-test value of cycle one is 0,33 and the t-test value of cycle two is 0,32. Based on the finding, the researcher concludes that PrintedMass Media is an appropriate media to improve students’ reading skill. Keywords :Printed Mass Media, Reading Skill,Classroom Action Research.

Abstract

 Reading is important for everybody, because ones can get new knowledge in this globalization era. The students can open up new world with reading and get new point with it. Reading is a basic life skill of students success in school and consequently through life. Without the ability to read effectively, the students can not improve their reading skill. Hence, the aims of the this research were to know whether Anticipation Guide  strategy can improve students reading skill and to describe the class condition when Anticipation Guide strategy was implemented in teaching learning process at the Eight grade of SMP N 4 Sukoharjo in Academic Year 2017/2018. This research was conducted at the Eight grade of SMP N 4 Sukoharjo. The method of the study was classroom action research which was conducted from August to December 2017. The data was collected through test and non-test. In collecting data was used multiple choices in pre test, post test 1, and post test 2. Besides that to collect  non-test was used observation, interview, and documentation. While, to analyze the data was used t-test. The results of the research showed that the implementation of Anticipation Guide   strategy was successful to improve students reading skill. The mean score increased from 50.62 in pre-test became 60.15 in post test 1  until 76.15 in post test 2. T-test was used to compare the significance of teaching reading skill with df = n-1 = 31. In t-table values, significance 5% was 2.040 and significance 1% was 2.744. The result from pre- test and post-test 1 was significance which 2.040 < 3.10 > 2.744. It can be concluded that there was significance difference from pre-test score and post-test 1. Then the result of analysis by using t-test between post-test 1 and post-test 2 was . Then t-test result between post-test 1 and post-test 2 were higher 2.040 < 4.80 > 2.744. A significance improvement between post-test 1 and post-test 2 could be seen clearly from that. In addition, the findings of teaching and learning process showed that there was a change of classroom situation before and after Anticipation Guide was implemented. In addition, the understanding of teaching and learning process show that there is a change of classroom situation after Anticipation Guide strategy is implemented. It can be showed that the students are enjoyable in the learning process when the students active in learning process. Key  words:  Reading  Skill;  Anticipation  Guide  (AG)  strategy;  Classroom  ActionResearch

Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the implementation of multimedia in teaching English to young learners at SD Kristen Manahan Surakarta in the academic year 2016/ 2017 involving the teaching and learning activities, the learner’s role, the teacher’s role and the role of instructional materials. Besides that, the strength and weakness of using multimedia to teach English to young learners .were also described. It was a case study conducted at second to fifth grade students of SD Kristen Manahan, Surakarta and the teacher. This study was conducted in classes 2A, 2B, 2C, 3A, 3B, 3C, 4A, 4B, 4C, 5A and 5B.The investigation concerned in the implementation of multimedia in teaching English to young learners. The techniques of collecting the data were interview, observation and documentation. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that multimedia were used not only to teach English but also to assess the students’ achievement. The teacher facilitated the students’ needs, created and operated the multimedia, monitored the class activities, managed the class and became a partner for her students. The students, however, were passive in the implementation of multimedia. Concerning the strength and weakness of implementation of multimedia in teaching English to young learners at SD Kristen Manahan, the result showed five strong points. It helped students in understanding materials better, brought fun to the students, the interest of student was increased, it helped the teacher in preparing the teaching and learning process and cost of the materials was reduced. However, it had five weaknesses. It took time for preparing multimedia devices; not all the multimedia devices were ready to use; the boredom of students, electricity matters, the difficulties to find the proper source. Abstract

The objectives of the research are : to find out whether Chain Story Games can improve students’ speaking skill on narrative text and to find out how far Chain Story Games can improve students’ speaking skill at the eighth grade students especially in class VIII-A of SMP N 11 Surakarta in 2018/2019 Academic Year. The research used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) and the subject of the research was the students of eighth grade especially in class VIII-A. In implementation of the teaching and learning process, the researcher divided the research into two cycles. Cycle 1 had 2 meetings and cycle 2 had 2 meetings with post test in every cycle. Every cycle consisted of 4procedures:planning, action, observation, and reflection. For Classroom Action Research the researcher devided into two techniques, there were test consisted of oral test and non-test consisted of observation, interview, and documentation. In analyzed the data, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data consisted of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. In the quantitative data the researcher used t-test formula to conducted Pre-Test, Post-Test 1 and Post Test 2. Based on the result of this research, the mean score showed that in cycle 1 some students were still less on grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and pronunciation. Therefore, Cycle 2 showed that the used of Chain Story Gameswas good to improve the students’ speaking skill. The findings was supported by the qualitative data of students’ responses in the field note, interview and documentation. The quantitative data improve from pre-test to post test 1 and post test 2. The students’ mean score in pretest was 48.13, post test 1 was 61.50 and post test 2 was 78.13. The result of post-test 1 by using t-test was 10.17and post-test 2 by using t-test was 9.90. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that “The use of Chain Story Games can improve students’ speaking skill on narrative text at the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Surakarta in 2018/2019 academic year especially in class VIII-A ”. Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the process of teaching reading in SMP Advent 2018/2019 and to describe the problem in teaching reading at SMP Advent in the Academic Year of 2018/2019.This research was conducted at the seventh grade students of SMP Advent Surakarta in the Academic Year of 2018/ 2019. The researcher used Descriptive Qualitative Research which was conducted February 2019 at the seventh grade. The research was conducted at seventh grade of SMP Advent Surakarta the researcher found some problems during the teaching reading processed with three meetings of learning process. In analyzing the data, the researcher used qualitative data. To collect the qualitative data, the researcher used interview, observation, and documentation.Based on the result of the study, Teaching reading at the seventh grade students of SMP Advent Surakarta is quite good. The teacher could handle class well. It contain be known by the class situation. The students could be motivated by the teacher. But, teaching reading at the seventh grade students of SMP Advent Surakarta still had some problems of teaching learning process showed by still used the old methods and stuck on old text. From the teacher, she had limitation in method that she used. The teacher did not used special method while teaching reading. For the students, they could not used time wisely in reading activity. Some of students prefer to talk with their friends than doing reading activity. The technique of data analysis are data reduction, data display, and conclusion.
