Abstract

This research is conducted to fulfill the following aims: 1) to describe a cooperative learning method namely Numbered Heads Together, 2) the effectiveness of Numbered Heads Together to improve student learning outcomes in the seventh grade students of SMP Islam Al - Hadi Sukoharjo in 2020/2021 Academic Year. This research was conducted by applying Collaborative Action Research. The procedure of this research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of two sessions. The procedure of action research is conducted in 4 steps namely planning, action, observation and reflection. There are two kinds of data namely non test, which consists of observation, interview, documentation and photograph; and test which conducted by giving a pre-test before the research begins and post-test at the conclusion of the research. The quantitative data was analyzed by using SPSS 23 Statistic Software to calculate the nonindependent t-test. The qualitative data analysis consists of three concurrent flows of activity: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The research shows the improvement of mean score from pre-test which is 57.41, to 67.05 on post-test 1 and finally 76.82 on post-test 2. Therefore, it can be concluded that: 1) Numbered Heads Together as a cooperative learning model is a learning strategy which emphasized student’s individual accountability, 2) Numbered Heads Together is effective in improving student learning outcomes in vocabulary.   Key words: Numbered Heads Together, Vocabulary Mastery, Classroom Action Research.

Abstract

The implementation of online learning becomes popular all around the world during the Covid-19 pandemic. In Indonesia, the changing of synchronous learning to asynchronous learning is somewhat new. As a result, the researchers think it is needed to learn about the students' perceptions of online learning with MS Teams in learning to write. The goals of this study were to find out the activities done by the students in using MS Teams, students’ perception toward the use of MS Teams, and the utilization of MS Teams in class. The research used descriptive qualitative research. The eighth-grade students at SMP N 7 Purwodadi were the participant in the study. The data collection used in this study was interviews and questionnaires. Four steps of data analysis namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and data verification were used in the study. The result showed that the students utilized MS Teams to send assignments and discuss with the teacher related to learning writing. The students' perceptions toward the use of MS Teams in learning writing were MS Teams allows students to study anywhere and anytime, MS Teams allows students to practice writing English, and MS Teams helps students to improve their writing skill. The students utilized MS Teams to study for at least two hours per day and to discuss with the teacher. In conclusion, the students' perceptions toward the use of MS Teams in online learning showed positive responses.   Keywords: MS Teams, Perception, Writing Skill, EFL, Online Learning

Abstract

Understanding the meaning of a novel need literature study in semantics aspect especially in figurative language. This study aimed to identify and examine the meaning of figure of speech used in the novel The Story of Layla and Majnun Written by Nizami Ganjavi. This study focused on simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony form. The data was analyzed by applying descriptive qualitative method. The data collection used was documentation technique. Interactive model data of analysis used to analyze the data. From the result, this study was examined 76 sentences which was contained of figurative language. The data was analyzed one by one to identified the kind of figure of speech used and the meaning of them. The result of this study found 20 simile form, 13 metaphor form, 10 personification, 10 hyperbole form, 12 metonymy form, 3 synecdoche form. The most dominant figurative language used in this novel was form simile (26 %). This novel preserved the Bedouin culture and presented not only a romantic journey of love between humans, but also the Divine Love (Mahabbah). The researcher hope that readers would know about the study of linguistics. Abstract

This research aimskat finding out whetherktherekiska significant correlation between the habit oflwatchinglEnglish moviesland vocabularylmastery at seventh-grade students of SMPlNegeril1 Colomadu. Thislresearchlwas conducted atlthe seventh gradelof SMPlNegeril1 Colomadulin 2020/2021 AcademiclYear. The researcher used a correlational study which was conducted from December 2020 until May 2021 at the class of VII E. The study was divided into two phases, each of which included two meetings. Each meeting also included data collection through the use of a Google Form. In order tolanalyze quantitativeldata, the researcherlusedlquestionnaires and tests. Based onlthelresult oflthe study, it showedlthatlthe coefficient of the correlationlbetween watchinglmovie habits andlvocabularylmastery was 0.685 withlthe levellsignificant 5% for theldegree oflfreedom (df) = 29 the rltable is 0.367, and the level significant 1% for theldegreeloflfreedom (df) = 29 the rltable is 0.470. By using coefficient correlation, criteria 0.685 is classified to interval 0.600 – 0.800 in the indexes of correlation which is sufficient correlation. It means that r-observation (rxy) was higher than r table and it was concluded that there was alsignificant correlationlbetween watchinglmovie habits andlvocabulary mastery at the seventh-gradelstudents of SMP Nl1 Colomadu inlthe 2020/2021 academiclyear.   Keywords: Vocabulary Mastery, Watching Movie Habits, Correlational Study

Abstract

The objectives of this research are: 1) To analyze the practices that were carried out in teaching and learning reading by using Google Classroom; 2) To analyze the students perceive the applications and the level of students’ perception towards the Google Classroom in teaching and learning reading; 3) To investigate the students’ behavior level towards the use of Google Classroom in teaching and learning reading. The subjects in this research were eighth-grade learners of State Junior High School 1 (SMP N 1) Colomadu. The students of 8A class, which had 32 students, were the subjects of this study. The research volunteers were chosen using a random sampling approach. The data was gathered by the researcher through observations at the school, interviews with the English teacher, and distribution of questionnaires to participants. The data collection approach is qualitative research, which involves data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. According to the findings of this research, students at SMP N 1 Colomadu agree to the implementation of Google Classroom as an online platform for English learning. They believe that Google Classroom has helped them with all aspects of their learning. The integration of Google Classroom for SMP N 1 Colomadu was then successfully completed.   Keyword: Analysis, Google Classroom, Teaching Reading, Perception

Abstract

The present study entitled the relationship between students’ grammar mastery and writing ability on the tenth grade students of SMK Wijaya Kusuma Surakarta. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is significant relationship between students’ grammar mastery and writing ability. Quantitative method with correlation design was used to collect the data. Conducted at SMK Wijaya Kusuma Surakarta in the second semester of 2020/2021 academic year, 28 students of the tenth grade were taken as the sample of this study. Random sampling technique is used in this study. The instruments to obtain the data were grammar mastery test and writing test of writing ability. A try out of grammar test was held to know the validity and 12 numbers of items is valid. To analyze the data, Pearson Product Moment formula was used in manual and computer calculations. Based on the data collected, the mean score of grammar test is 8.36 and the mean score of writing test is 75.79. The result of the analysis shows that the coefficient relationship (rxy ) 0.748. Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that the grammar mastery had positive relationship with the writing ability on the tenth grade students of SMK Wijaya Kusuma Surakarta.   Keywords: Grammar, Writing Ability, Correlational Study

Abstract

Textbooks were one of the supporting materials for learning. The textbook that was chosen by the teacher has a very big role for students. This can be proven through student learning outcomes in understanding foreign language materials related to culture. That was why researcher conducted research on students' perceptions of understanding the cultural components contained in an English textbook entitled When English Ring a Bell. The purpose of this research was to determine students' perceptions towards cultural component in English textbooks. In this research, the researcher was used descriptive qualitative research. Subject of this research is students of VIII grade SMP Advent Surakarta. This research was used descriptive qualitative and the data were obtained by interviewing English teacher and questionnaires consists of 49 questions that were distributed to the students via Google Forms. The results of the interview with English teacher regarding students' understanding of the use of cultural components in English textbooks indicate that students need to be directly involved in practicing the material in the textbooks, so that students better understand the material even though some students lack of speaking and pronouncing skill. The results of the questionnaire show that students' perceptions of understanding the use of cultural components through textbooks were supported through the role of the teacher, the display design of textbooks and materials that are easy to understand, but not optimal, this is due to the use of additional learning media other than textbooks.   Keywords: Student perception, cultural components, English textbook
