Abstract

The book Jala’ Al-Khathir by Shaykhʿ Abdul Qadir al-Jailani is one of his monumental works. It examines in depth the aspects of spirituality and Sufism in Islam, with anemphasis on attaining the state of fana’, namely the dissolution of the ego and worldly desire. Previous studies have discussed fana’, such as throughal-Harawi’s Manazilal-Sairin, or through a comparison of the thought of Abu Yazid al-Busthami and Junaid al-Baghdadi, yet none has specifically traced the interplay of fana’, from nafsan dhawa with in the book Jala’ Al-Khathir while also examining its resonance in lived religious practice. This article aims to answer three questions: howal-Jailani formulates fana’, from nafs and hawa; the extent to which this formulations coherent with, or differs from, other Sufi concepts; and how this normative frame work resonates with documented tarekat practices. This is a qualitative study based on library research, combining textual-interpretive analysis of the primary source with a comparative review of secondary literature, including ethnographic data on the practices of the Qadiriyya wa Naqshbandiyya order as a comparative case study. The findings show: first, al-Jailani positions the testing of faith as a prerequisite before one enters the station (maqam) offana’; second, there are two sequential stations, namely the station of khalifah and at-takwin, which, when compared with the stages of fana’, in al-Harawi and Abu Yazid al-Busthami, show a greater emphasis on the ethical-social dimension rather than the metaphysical; third, thecase study of tarekat practice reveals that this normative frame work is not undertaken individually and directly, but is mediated by a mursyid/ajengan through collective ritual discipline (dzikir, tawassul, mujahadah), so that this article argues that the text of the book functions as a conceptual map, rather than a substitute for the guidance of a spiritual teacher.

Abstract

Kufr is a central concept in the Qur’an that is often narrowly understood merely as the opposite of faith iman; however, its meaning is multidimensional and extends beyond the purely theological realm. This study aims to: (1) map the distribution and morphological variations of kufr within the Qur’an; (2) analyze its semantic typologies of meaning; and (3) examine its psychological impact on human cognitive, affective, and behavioral states. The study employs a qualitative library research method based on thematic exegesis tafsir mawdu’i, utilizing Tafsir AlMishbah as the primary exegetical source. The findings indicate that: (1) the root kaf-fa’-ro and its derivatives appear 525 times in the Qur’an, predominantly in Medinan surahs (±315) compared to Meccan ones (±210), reflecting an expansion of the concept of kufr from individual creedal issues to social and political dimensions; (2) five typologies of kufr are identified: the denial of tauhid (monotheism), ingratitude for blessings, disassociation, vehement rejection, and the act of “covering” or sealing off; and (3) each typology engenders distinct psychological consequences, including cognitive-orientational dysfunction, existential anxiety, relational breakdown, cognitive-emotional dissonance, and the degradation of cumulative consciousness. This research contributes to filling a gap in integrative semantic studies of the Qur’an by addressing the psychological essence of kufr, a subject that has not previously been systematically examined.

Abstract

The central premise of this study is that conventional micro-individual asbabun nuzul is no longer adequate for addressing religious polarization within Indonesia’s increasingly contested digital public sphere. This library research, grounded in a contextual hermeneutics framework, proposes a reconstruction of macro asbabun nuzul by integrating Fazlur Rahman’s Double Movement Theory and Abdullah Saeed’s Hierarchy of Values Theory. The framework is applied to three wasatiyyah verses: QS. al-Baqarah: 143, QS. al-Hujurat: 13, and QS. al-Kafirun: 6, through three stages: reconstruction of seventh-century Arabian history, extraction of universal values, and recontextualization within Indonesia. It is found that: (1) the principle of wasa an responds to Medinan geopolitical polarization, not merely the change of qiblah; (2) the phrase li ta’arafu tribal system; and (3) the phrase lakum d deconstructs the Arab nukum proclaims religious freedom against the Qurayshi oligarchy. From these three findings, four principles of interpretation were formulated, namely historical contextualization, responsive congruence, interpretive validation, and dialogical openness, intended to guide the transformation of moderation values into adaptive social orthopraxy for mitigating religious conflict, both offline and online.
