Abstract

Korean culture has penetrated the world, including Indonesia, through the Korean Wave (Hallyu) phenomenon which includes K-Pop, K-Drama, Culinary and Fashion. This phenomenon has a big influence on teenagers aged 18-25 years in Indonesia, who are in an important phase of identity formation and are very vulnerable to external influences. Through social media and other platforms, teenagers are adopting Korean language and communication styles. Research shows a correlation between consumption of Korean cultural content and changes in teenagers' behavior and communication patterns. Qualitative research methods were used, with in-depth interviews and literature review as the main approaches. Interviews were conducted with UINSU students aged 18-25 years who are interested in Korean culture to understand its impact on their communication patterns. The results showed that adolescents learn through observation and imitation of Korean content, which strengthens their communication and behavior patterns. However, the influence of Korean culture has not changed their view of Indonesian culture, which they still appreciate and love. This research reveals that although Korean culture has a significant influence, Indonesian teenagers are able to balance between enjoying foreign culture and maintaining their local cultural identity.

Abstract

The culture shock phenomenon poses a significant challenge for Communication Science students at the North Sumatra State Islamic University (UINSU) as they navigate a diverse educational environment. This study rigorously examines students' experiences in managing complex cultural differences within the campus setting. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, we thoroughly investigate the factors influencing culture shock, such as language disparities, social norms, and cultural values. In-depth interviews with Communication Science students from outside North Sumatra yield valuable insights into their adaptation to the new environment. Our research definitively identifies students' diverse emotional, cognitive, and behavioral reactions to culture shock, encompassing stress, anxiety, and a sense of isolation. Students frequently grapple with difficulties in comprehending and communicating different social norms and local customs. However, our findings underscore the resilience of many students who, through peer support and their own adaptive strategies, effectively acclimate to their new environment.

Abstract

This journal explores the impact of globalization on cultural changes among the Javanese community in Tuntungan Village, a community situated at the border between urban and rural areas in Indonesia. Utilizing a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, this study focuses on aspects such as language, arts, traditional rituals, lifestyle, and social values. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings indicate an intensive mixing of Javanese, Indonesian, and foreign terms in daily communication, signaling a shift towards national and global languages. Traditional arts such as wayang kulit and ketoprak have been modified to attract younger generations, and hybrid art forms such as campursari have emerged as a creative adaptation to global influences. Traditional rituals such as Selamatetan and Mitoni are still maintained but have been simplified and adapted to fit modern lifestyles. The community's lifestyle has changed with the adoption of modern technology such as smartphones and the internet, along with a shift in consumption patterns towards global products and fast food. In education, there has been a shift from traditional knowledge-based education to a formal education system focused on global skills. Social values have also shifted from communal orientation towards higher individualism. This study emphasizes that the Tuntungan Village community actively negotiates and adapts to the currents of globalization, creating unique hybrid cultural forms. In this context, globalization not only brings cultural homogenization but also acts as a catalyst for the creation of new, complex, and dynamic cultures. The findings of this study provide important insights into how local communities respond and adapt to the challenges of globalization while maintaining the essence of their cultural identity.
